Book excerpt: Greek Dialogue in Antiquity reexamines evidence for Greek dialogue between the mid-fourth century BCE and the mid-first century CE - that is, roughly from Plato's death to the death of Philo of Alexandria. Although the genre of dialogue in antiquity has attracted a growing interest in the past two decades, the time covered in this book has remained overlooked and unresearched, with scholars believing that for much of this period the dialogue genre went through a period of decline and was revived only in the Roman times. The book carefully reassesses Post-Platonic and Hellenistic evidence, including papyri fragments, which have never been discussed in this context, and challenges the narrative of the dialogue's decline and subsequent revival, postulating, instead, the genre's unbroken continuity from the Classical period to the Roman Empire. It argues that dialogues and texts creatively interacting with dialogic conventions were composed throughout Hellenistic times, and proposes to reconceptualize the imperial period dialogue as evidence not of a resurgence, but of continuity in this literary tradition.

Central to these debates—and to this book—is the question of whether (and how) the humanist movement contributed to the secularization of Western cultural traditions at the end of the Middle Ages. A preeminent scholar of Italian humanism, Riccardo Fubini approaches this question in a new way—by redefining the problem of secularization more carefully to show how humanists can at once be secularizers and religious thinkers. The result is a provocative vision of the humanist movement. Humanism and Secularization offers a nuanced account of humanists contesting medieval ideas about authority not in order to reject Christianity or even orthodoxy, but to claim for themselves the right to define what it meant to be a Christian. Fubini analyzes key texts by major humanists—isuch as Petrarch, Poggio, and Valla—from the first century of the movement. Cicero claimed to be one of the rare genuine heirs of Socrates' method of inquiry by question and answer. This study takes Cicero's claims seriously and sharpens our understanding of Cicero's beliefs about proper philosophical discourse. Focusing on the passages in which Socratic conversation is displayed, the investigation reveals striking continuities with, and surprising differences from, the paradigm of the Socratic Method as presented by Plato. Even the perpetuae orationes that made up the bulk of Cicero's dialogues were thoroughly informed by his analysis of the strengths of the method. At the same time, Cicero identified weaknesses beyond its well-known rhetorical ineffectiveness. Significantly, serious criticism of Socratic dialectic is offered from the Stoic point of view. Assessment of that method as the Socratic inheritance of the Stoa and New Academy must accordingly be nuanced. .
