Book Synopsis Heritage Traces in the Making by : Jean Davallon
Download or read book Heritage Traces in the Making written by Jean Davallon and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2024-06-06 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world is full of traces of the past, ranging from things as different as monuments and factories to farms, eco-museums, landscapes, mountaineering and even woven-grass bridges. These traces must be protected and passed on to future generations. Communicational analysis shows that these traces have acquired the status of heritage by becoming communicative beings imbued with a new social life. Up until the 1970s and 1980s, granting this status was the prerogative of the state. New modes then emerged, increasingly involving social actors and the publicization of knowledge. Today, the heritage recognition of these traces also depends on interpretative schemes that circulate in society, notably through the media. Heritage Traces in the Making is aimed at anyone – researchers, professionals and students – who is interested in how heritage is created and how it evolves.

Book Synopsis Law and Veganism by : Jeanette Rowley
Download or read book Law and Veganism written by Jeanette Rowley and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-11-02 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In our complex, consumerist societies, the intricacy of personal interactions and the number of goods and products available often prevents us from direct knowledge of what lies ‘behind’ food behaviors, ingredients, and the origins of the modern food and agriculture supply chain. Over the last decade or so, scholars, lawyers and engaged lay vegans have had many discussions about vegan rights and discrimination as issues intrinsic to animal rights, but the final frontier remains intact: the direct concerns of other animals. To give effect to the rights of animals, we must recognize and defend the human right—or duty, as many uphold-- to care about them. Including contributors from Australia, the United States, Germany, Italy, France, Canada, Portugal, and the United Kingdom, this book explores the rights of vegans and how vegans can be protected from discrimination. Using an international socio-legal lens, the contributors discuss constitutional issues, vegan legal cases, the concept of protection for vegan ‘belief’ in human rights and equality law, the legal requirement to provide vegan food, animal agriculture and plant-based, vegan food in the context of the human right to food, and the rights of vegans in education and in health care. This book will be of interest to practicing lawyers, legal and critical legal scholars, scholars of vegan, and critical animal studies, and commentors on socio-political issues alike.

Download or read book Mummified written by Angela Stienne and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2022-06-07 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mummified explores the curious, unsettling and controversial cases of mummies held in French and British museums. From powdered mummies eaten as medicine to mummies unrolled in public, dissected for race studies and DNA-tested in modern laboratories, there is a lot more to these ancient remains than first meets the eye. This book takes you on a journey from Paris to London, Leicester and Manchester, from the apothecaries of the Middle Ages to the dissecting tables of the eighteenth century, and finally behind the screen of today’s computers, to revisit the stories of these bodies that have fascinated Europeans for so long. Mummified investigates matters of life and death, of collecting and viewing, and of interactions – sometimes violent and sometimes emotional – that question the essence of what makes us human.
Book Synopsis The Rise of Awards in Architecture by : Jean-Pierre Chupin
Download or read book The Rise of Awards in Architecture written by Jean-Pierre Chupin and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2022-09-06 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first scientific study to focus on awards in architecture and the built environment investigating their exponential growth since the 1980s. The celebration of excellence in architecture and related fields remains a phenomenon on which there is strangely little scientific scrutiny. What is to be understood from the plethora of award-winning projects, award-winning buildings and awarded professional practices in the built environment, year after year? Glossy images partake in an intense ballet at every local, regional, national or international award ceremony and they are meant to embody proofs of architectural excellence. However, it is necessary to take a critical distance to question what awards are meant to embody, symbolize, and perhaps measure. Each of the 10 chapters in this volume is centered on one question related to themes as varied as the comparison of Pritzker and Nobel Prizes, the Prix de Rome, the redefinition of quality through awards, green awards and sustainability, the multiplication of sustainable awards, heritage awards, architecture book awards, the awarding of school architecture, awards as mediations and awards as pedagogical devices. Many fields, once consolidated, have featured a sharp increase in related prizes. The original data, compiled and summarized in 4 appendices cover more than 150 award-granting organizations in some 30 countries. Our inventory includes upwards of 24,000 prizes awarded at more than 3,100 events, the earliest of which is the first instance of Western architecture’s seminal Grand Prix de Rome in France in 1720. A history of contemporary architecture is thus written through press releases that praise the merits of the heroes as much as their works and achievements. And while awards can be vehicles that propel architecture forward, they can also be Trojan horses in an era that is constantly on the lookout for event-driven products, small and big news, and brand imaging.
Book Synopsis Public Debts and National Sovereignty from the 12th to the 21st Century by : Michel Fouquin
Download or read book Public Debts and National Sovereignty from the 12th to the 21st Century written by Michel Fouquin and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2024-07-15 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following a series of crises of exceptional gravity, in 2008, the world economy entered a phase of high and growing indebtedness that fragilized its system on its financial grounds. On top of this, the dramatic prospects of the cost to fight climate deregulation will weight for at least two decades on our public finances. History shows that since the time the Italian city-states invented perpetual public debt to protect their monopoly over international trade, the world has been through long cycles of indebtedness and deleveraging. Through many experiences, developed countries have limited the cases of default on their debts, however defeated countries like Germany and Japan did not escape major failures. On the other hand, many emerging countries are more prone to default due to weak financial institutions and currencies. What could we learn from these experiments for our current situation? One central point is that, without doubt, solidarity, and cooperation between all nations of the world to fight climate deregulation and to share the costs is necessary. The risks of fragmentation on these issues would be disastrous. The second central point is making large multinationals and very wealthy people take on a fair share of the burden, notably by eliminating tax heavens.

Book Synopsis Medieval Monks and Monasteries by : Hunt Janin
Download or read book Medieval Monks and Monasteries written by Hunt Janin and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2023-02-15 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Middle Ages in Western Europe extended from roughly 500 to 1500 c.e. During these thousand years, hundreds of monastic communities were founded and played important roles in religious, economic, social, literary and even military realms. Each had different emphases and goals, ranging from aristocratic monasteries and nunneries that offered comfort and security, to rural institutions that specialized only in the most ascetic lifestyles. This book has two goals. The first is to detail the most significant monastic and secular events of the Middle Ages in Western Europe, such as the decline of the Roman Catholic Church, the rise of Protestantism and the various types and purposes of monasteries and nunneries. The second is to introduce some notable (and unusual) individuals who made their mark upon the Middle Ages-- such as Eustache, the French monk who became a pirate and made a pact with the Devil.
Book Synopsis Cultural Heritage, Sustainable Development and Human Rights by : Laura Pineschi
Download or read book Cultural Heritage, Sustainable Development and Human Rights written by Laura Pineschi and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-04 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of cultural heritage - in both its tangible and intangible forms - to sustainable development and its economic, social and environmental components is increasingly evident in the recent practice of intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations at the universal and regional level. Due consideration for the integration of the cultural dimension in the implementation of Agenda 2030 has begun to grow in various international fora, including initiatives to emphasize the role and contribution of tangible and intangible heritage as drivers and enablers of sustainable development. It has also been recognized that the inherent links between cultural heritage and sustainable development cannot be correctly addressed without taking into account their various implications for the effective enjoyment of all human rights, including cultural rights. This book offers a thorough academic investigation on the importance of cultural heritage to sustainable development and cultural rights from an international law perspective. Providing an in-depth review of the possible intersections between cultural heritage, sustainable development and cultural rights and the limits of the current legal and institutional framework, it will be of interest to researchers and scholars of international law, cultural heritage law, environmental law and human rights law.
Book Synopsis Universality After Universalism by : Markus Messling

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of universalism inherited from the French Revolution has been strongly discredited by its colonial history; today, it is also the target of nationalist attacks. What remains of it? Now available in English, Markus Messling's critically acclaimed study shows how contemporary Francophone literatures seek, after European universalism, approaches to a new universality, without which knowledge and justice cannot be organised in world society. With a foreword by Souleymane Bachir Diagne
Book Synopsis The Anticolonial Museum by : Bruno Brulon Soares
Download or read book The Anticolonial Museum written by Bruno Brulon Soares and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-18 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Anticolonial Museum acknowledges some of the consequences of colonialism in the current work of museums. Looking at museum theory in a critical way, it proposes a radical revision of museums’ rhetoric on decolonisation, as well as their public image and practices. Bringing together a collection of reflections on decolonisation through the observation of museum performance and discourse, the author considers current practices in response to the social claims of marginalised groups and activists. Drawing from a genealogy of decolonial thinking in museology, Brulon Soares identifies the inherent paradoxes reflected in museum work. The book’s focus is not exclusively on the reality of colonised countries, nor on the context of former imperialist nations—instead, it raises anticolonial questions, finding common ground between the different actors involved in the museum: scholars, students, curators, practitioners, community members and Indigenous creators. One of the central aims of this book is to view the museum as a locus for multiple enunciations, thus identifying in museum practice the active possibility of reconnecting subjectivities and restoring material fluxes to effectively repair the bonds that have been frayed by colonialism and an expanding modernity. The Anticolonial Museum will be of great interest to researchers and students engaged in the study of decolonisation. It will also be essential for practitioners who wish to reconsider the impact of coloniality on their own position and everyday practice.
Book Synopsis Interpreting Violence by : Cassandra Falke
Download or read book Interpreting Violence written by Cassandra Falke and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-03-30 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representations of violence surround us in everyday life – in news reports, films and novels – inviting interpretation and raising questions about the ethics of viewing or reading about harm done to others. How can we understand the processes of meaning-making involved in interpreting violent events and experiences? And can these acts of interpretation themselves be violent by reproducing the violence that they represent? This book examines the ethics of engaging with violent stories from a broad hermeneutic perspective. It offers multidisciplinary perspectives on the sense-making involved in interpreting violence in its various forms, from blatant physical violence to less visible forms that may inhere in words or in the social and political order of our societies. By focusing on different ways of narrating violence and on the cultural and paradigmatic forms that govern such narrations, Interpreting Violence explores the ethical potential of literature, art and philosophy to expose mechanisms of violence while also recognizing their implication in structures that contribute to or benefit from practices of violence.
Book Synopsis Monuments Decolonized by : Susan Slyomovics
Download or read book Monuments Decolonized written by Susan Slyomovics and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2024-07-23 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Statuomania" overtook Algeria beginning in the nineteenth century as the French affinity for monuments placed thousands of war memorials across the French colony. But following Algeria's hard-fought independence in 1962, these monuments took on different meaning and some were "repatriated" to France, legally or clandestinely. Today, in both Algeria and France, people are moving and removing, vandalizing and preserving this contested, yet shared monumental heritage. Susan Slyomovics follows the afterlives of French-built war memorials in Algeria and those taken to France. Drawing on extensive fieldwork in both countries and interviews with French and Algerian heritage actors and artists, she analyzes the colonial nostalgia, dissonant heritage, and ongoing decolonization and iconoclasm of these works of art. Monuments emerge here as objects with a soul, offering visual records of the colonized Algerian native, the European settler colonizer, and the contemporary efforts to engage with a dark colonial past. Richly illustrated with more than 100 color images, Monuments Decolonized offers a fresh aesthetic take on the increasingly global move to fell monuments that celebrate settler colonial histories.
