This book was released on 2013-02-11 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The contributions gathered in this volume seek to understand the relations and influences across time between Europe and the United States. If there are significant differences between the model of American and European society, if at some point in our history, even recent, some divergences emerged, it is important to remember the numerous similarities between these two continents. Euro-American couple is not a myth and the future geopolitical and geo-economic developments should encourage them to deepen and strengthen transatlantic relations. Besides the importance of the treated study topic, this work supplies a multidisciplinary analysis, essential to the understanding of the subject and is based on authors having a multicultural view.
Book Synopsis EU Law of the Overseas by : Dimitry Kochenov
Download or read book EU Law of the Overseas written by Dimitry Kochenov and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millions of British, Dutch, French, Danish, Spanish, and Portuguese nationals permanently reside in the overseas parts of their Member States. These people, like the companies registered in such territories, often find it virtually impossible to determine what law applies when legal decisions are required. Although Article 52(1) of the EU Treaty clearly states that EU law applies in the territory of all the Member States, most Member State territories lying outside of Europe provide examples of legal arrangements deviating from this rule. This book, for the first time in English, gathers these deviations into a complex system of rules that the editor calls the 'EU law of the Overseas'. Member States' territories lying far away from the European continent either do not fall within the scope of EU law entirely, or are subject to EU law with serious derogations. A huge gap thus exists between the application of EU law in Europe and in the overseas parts of the Member States, which has not been explored in the English language literature until now. This collection of essays sets out to correct this by examining the principles of Union law applicable to such territories, placing them in the general context of the development of European integration. Among the key legal issues discussed are the following: internal market outside of Europe; the protection of minority cultures; EU citizenship in the overseas countries and territories of the EU; Article 349 TFEU as a source of derogations; The implications of Part IV TFEU for the overseas acquis; participatory methods of reappraisal of the relationship between the EU and the overseas; implications for the formation of strategic alliances; voting in European elections; what matters may be referred by courts and tribunals in overseas countries and territories; application of the acquis to the parts of the Member States not controlled by the government or excluded from ratione loci of EU law; interplay of the Treaty provisions and secondary legislation in the overseas; customs union; wholly internal situations; free movement of capital and direct investments in companies; the euro area outside of Europe; duty of loyal cooperation in the domain of EU external action; territorial application of EU criminal law; and territorial application of human rights treaties. Twenty-two leading experts bring their well-informed perspectives to this under-researched but important subject in which, although rules abound and every opportunity to introduce clarity into the picture seems to be present, the situation is far from clear. The book will be welcomed by serious scholars of European Union law and by public international lawyers, as well as by policy-makers and legal practitioners.
Book Synopsis The EU, Promoting Regional Integration, and Conflict Resolution by : Thomas Diez
Download or read book The EU, Promoting Regional Integration, and Conflict Resolution written by Thomas Diez and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-02-16 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive study into the promotion of regional integration as a central pillar of European Union (EU) relations with the rest of the world. It is a strategy to deal with a core security challenge: the transformation of conflicts and, in particular, regional conflicts. Yet to what extent has the promotion of regional integration been successful in transforming conflicts? What can we regard as the core mechanisms of such an impact? This volume offers a comprehensive assessment of the nexus between promoting integration and conflict transformation. The authors systematically compare the consequences of EU involvement in eight conflicts in four world regions within a common framework. In doing so, they focus on the promotion of integration as a preventative strategy to avoid conflicts turning violent and as a long-term strategy to transform violent conflicts by placing them in a broader institutional context. The book will be of use to students and scholars interested in European foreign policy, comparative regionalism, and conflict resolution.

Book Synopsis Human Rights and Democracy in EU Foreign Policy by : Rosa Balfour
Download or read book Human Rights and Democracy in EU Foreign Policy written by Rosa Balfour and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the disparity between rhetoric and performance in the European Union response to abuses of human rights and transgression of democracy. With the Arab spring putting the spotlight on the EU’s self-portrait as committed to promoting global human rights and democracy, this book examines the paradoxes of its international posture and the inconsistencies and double standards of its policies. With an informative and empirical approach examining EU relations since the end of the Cold War, this book seeks to uncover the reasons behind the Union’s actions and understand the foreign policy dilemmas and processes that guide its action. Including detailed analysis of Ukraine and Egypt, and the EU response to momentous changes for neighbouring nations, the author draws upon thoroughly-researched investigation into twenty years of EU foreign policy to create a framework using both EU Studies and International Relations. Providing a deeper analysis than other dominant explanations, this book presents new theories on the reasons behind the mismatch between words and deeds. An invaluable and timely volume, Human Rights and Democracy in EU Foreign Policy will be of interest to students and scholars of EU politics, International Relations and human rights policy.
Book Synopsis France in the South Pacific by : Denise Fisher
Download or read book France in the South Pacific written by Denise Fisher and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2013-05-23 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: France is a Pacific power, with three territories, a military presence, and extensive investments. Once seen by many as a colonial interloper in the South Pacific, by the early 2000s, after it ended nuclear testing in French Polynesia and negotiated transitional Accords responding to independence demands in New Caledonia, France seems to have become generally accepted as a regional partner, even if its efforts concentrate on its own territories rather than the independent island states. But Frances future in the region has yet to be secured. By 2014 it is to have handed over a set of agreed autonomies to the New Caledonian government, before an independence referendum process begins. Past experience suggests that a final resolution of the status of New Caledonia will be divisive and could lead once again to violent confrontations. In French Polynesia, calls continue for independence and for treatment under UN decolonisation procedures, which France opposes. Other island leaders are watching, so far putting faith in the Noumea Accord, but wary of the final stages. The issues and possible solutions are more complex than the French Pacific island population of 515,000 would suggest. Combining historical background with political and economic analysis, this comprehensive study offers vital insight into the intricate history -- and problematic future -- of several of Australias key neighbours in the Pacific and to the priorities and options of the European country that still rules them. It is aimed at policy-makers, scholars, journalists, businesspeople, and others who want to familiarise themselves with the issues as Frances role in the region is redefined in the years to come.

Book Synopsis Rencontres australiennes by : Pierre Lagayette
Download or read book Rencontres australiennes written by Pierre Lagayette and published by Presses Paris Sorbonne. This book was released on 2008 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis La famille dans l’ordre juridique de l’Union européenne / Family within the Legal Order of the European Union by : Elsa Bernard
Download or read book La famille dans l’ordre juridique de l’Union européenne / Family within the Legal Order of the European Union written by Elsa Bernard and published by Bruylant. This book was released on 2020-12-31 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Family law, with its civil law tradition, and strong roots in the national cultures of the Member States, does not normally fall within the scope of European law. However, it is no longer possible to argue that family law is outside European law entirely. There are many aspects of the family which are subject to European influence, to the point that the outlines of a «European family» are starting to emerge. This book is intended to highlight the European experience of family law and its substantive (i.e. European citizenship, EU social policy, EU civil service...) and private international law aspects. Union law therefore contains a form of «special» family law which is shared between the Member States and supplements their national family laws. Its theoretical and political importance in the Union, as well as its future, are discussed by the authors. Far from remaining fragmented alongside the national laws of Member States, it will likely develop to offer European citizens and residents a common family law within the EU.
