Download or read book Jozef IJsewijn. Humanism in the Low Countries written by Jozef Ijsewijn and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2015-09-23 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Jozef IJsewijn’s most relevant essays collected in one volume Jozef IJsewijn. Humanism in the Low Countries contains twenty-one essays written by the late Professor Jozef IJsewijn during the period 1966-1996. All essays were selected by his pupil Professor Gilbert Tournoy, who collaborated with him since the foundation of the Seminarium Philologiae Humanisticae in 1966 until his untimely death in 1998. They are now published in one volume in homage to the most brilliant scholar in the field of Neo-Latin Studies of the twentieth century. A number of contributions focus on the life and/or work of a single humanist from the Netherlands, others have a more general nature and deal with the very beginning and the later blossoming of Neo-Latin literature in the Low Countries or with the relationship between humanism in the Low Countries and in other European countries. Hidden in a less-known journal or a Festschrift for a colleague, these studies are nowadays not always easy to find. This volume brings the most relevant essays of IJsewijn together and aims to contribute to the research and study of humanism and Neo-Latin literature in the Low Countries.

Book excerpt: Christian's long reign (1588-1648) saw Denmark reduced from a major to a second-rate power, and in response he sought to portray the country as a powerful, rich, and culturally refined monarchy with long and glorious traditions. Skovgaard-Petersen examines the Latin histories of Denmark by Johannes Pontanus (1571-1639) and Johannes Meursius (1579-1639) as part of that endeavor. The study is revised from her 1998 doctoral dissertation for the University of Bergen. Distributed in the US by ISBS. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis The Spread of Italian Humanism by : Roberto Weiss
Download or read book The Spread of Italian Humanism written by Roberto Weiss and published by London, Hutchinson. This book was released on 1964 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Professor Weiss traces the gradual growth of the Renaissance from the late thirteenth century onwards. He devotes a whole chapter to Boccaccio and Petrarch, another to Sannazzaro, Castiglione, Ariosto and Machiavelli. One of his recurrent themes is the conflict between Platonism and Aristotelianism in the thought of the times. After considering the novel literary genres developed by the Italian writers, he turns to the influence of humanism in western Europe generally, and in particular the rise of Petrarchism and pastoral literature in France, Spain, and England. A final chapter discusses Renaissance fiction which, with de Rojas' play, La Celestine, the work of Rabelais, and the Spanish picaresque novel, looks forward to Cervantes and Shakespeare." -- Book jacket.
