Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This History has its origin in a suggestion, made in September 1990 by former IAU General Secretary Derek McNally, who felt "that a 75 year history of the Union was needed before the col lective memory of those who knew the Union before the Second World War vanished. It would then be a preparatory volume to a centennial history in 2019. " Indeed, of those who knew the Union that long ago, few are still with us. Six years ago, at Baltimore on August 2, 1988, listening and reminiscing at the Inaugural Ceremonies of the Union's 20th General Assembly, I realized that it was almost exactly half a century ago that, at the age of 24, I attended the Inaugurations at my "first" Assembly: on August 3, 1938 in Stockholm. Now, in 1994, this is almost 56 years ago, three quarters of the Union's age. Only vague recollections - no better than that -lead me back to this event, just before World War II. And so, this is not a history based on recollection, far from it. Recollection was helpful in that it allowed me, better perhaps than a younger author, to appreciate circumstances under which the letters and reports which form the basis for this History were written. The account is largely based on archival documents, collected from a wide variety of sources.

Book excerpt: This book contains the full Labanotation score of "Soiree Musicale" with detailed study and performance notes, historical background and photographs. The first Tudor ballet to be made available in published form, "Tudor's Soiree Musicale" marks the first step towards preserving the work of this internationally celebrated choreographer, who pointed the way to a deeper psychological insight into the art of ballet. "Soiree Musicale" is a charming, lively piece which is suited to classroom study and stage performance. Although technically demanding when performed to full tempo, the dances allow for a degree of personal interpretation which can surmount technical problems. Ann Hutchinson Guest was a founder and for twenty years director of the New York City Dance Notation Bureau. She has been at the forefront of the development and use of Labanotation, spearheading new ideas in teaching methods incorporating notation. She is presently director of the Lan

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of the beloved tales of the Brothers Grimm – selected, translated and edited by Peter Wortsman - is drawn from the 1857 edition of the German original, the last edition reviewed and approved by the Brothers in their lifetime. Over the years, the Brothers' enigmatic narratives have been sanitized by Disney and children's book editors for modern consumption; this indispensable edition restores their sting and vigor to the original prose. In Wortsman’s words, his translation is a return to "a tincture of concentrated man-eating ogre and ground hag tooth, diluted in blood, sweat and tears, as a potent vaccine against the crippling effects of fear and fury." These fortifying imaginative vaccines are accompanied by twenty-four full-color illustrations by Haitian artists, including Edouard Duval-Carrié, Pascale Monnin, and Frankétienne. Edwidge Danticat observes that many Haitian painters bring "forth another canvas beneath the one we see." These works’ imaginative scope, vitality, and evocation of the unconscious open deep channels between the two traditions, shedding new light and shadow on the classic tales.

Book excerpt: This study surveys scholarly criticism of Grimm's Fairy Tales from its publication to the present. It sets out to reveal the changing perception of fairy tales, from the initial assumption that they were derived from ancient sources, and the consequent interest in the origin of the genre and evidence for ancient ritualistic practice, to the study of the fairy tale as a literary genre, distinct from other types of popular narrative. Ideological critics are seen to pursue the meaning of the tales, and folklorists to examine cultural sources and story-telling as performance art.
