Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ameenah Gurib-Fakim served as the 6th and first female President of the Republic of Mauritius (June 5, 2015-March 23, 2018). She holds a BSc (Chemistry) from the University of Surrey and a PhD (Organic Chemistry) from the University of Exeter, UK. She has been awarded five Honorary Doctorates (DSc).A life-long scientist, academician, entrepreneur and an "accidental" President who came to the high office without any political affiliations. She was the first female Professor of Chemistry with an endowed chair at the University of Mauritius and became the first academician to have translated her research work on medicinal plants into an enterprise. She is also a mother of two grown children and is married to Dr. Anwar Fakim, a practicing surgeon.A prolific author, she has published on a diverse range of subjects, authored and co-authored books and scientific articles on medicinal plants. She is a sought-after speaker. Her 2014 TED talk on medicinal plants has garneredover a million hits and has been translated into 24 languages. In this autobiography, she retraces her journey from the small village of Plaine Magnien, where she grew up and given its ethnic, social and cultural diversity, she considers it to be a microcosm of the world. She takes the reader through her journey that has encompassed academic, entrepreneurial and political spheres, ultimately reaching the highest position in the country as President of the Republic. She also writes about the changing political vicissitudes in Mauritius. As the gender gap narrows and women's aspirations rise, her narrative offers compelling commentary and enduring lessons of experience that will find broad appeal among women in all professional walks of life. A firm believer in the notion that countries must invest in their young people and empower them with the tools of science and technology, she is devoting her post-Presidency life to advancing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education so that all Mauritians, indeed all Africans can stay economically, technologically and scientifically competitive in a rapidlytransforming global economy. This theme has been the leit motif of her life and remains very close to her heart.

Book excerpt: Ethnoecology has blossomed in recent years into an important science because of the realization that the vast body of knowledge contained in both indigenous and folk cultures is being rapidly lost as natural ecosystems and cultures are being destroyed by the encroachment of development. Ethnobotany and ethnozoology both began largely with direct observations about the ways in which people used plants and animals and consisted mainly of the compilation of lists. Recently, these subjects have adopted a much more scientific and quantitative methodology and have studied the ways in which people manage their environment and, as a consequence, have used a much more ecological approach. This manual of ethnobotanical methodology will become an essential tool for all ethnobiologists and ethnoecologists. It fills a significant gap in the literature and I only wish it had been available some years previously so that I could have given it to many of my students. I shall certainly recommend it to any future students who are interested in ethnoecology. I particularly like the sympathetic approach to local peoples which pervades this book. It is one which encourages the ethnobotanical work by both the local people themselves and by academically trained researchers. A study of this book will avoid many of the arrogant approaches of the past and encourage a fair deal for any group which is being studied. This manual promotes both the involvement oflocal people and the return to them of knowledge which has been studied by outsiders.

Book excerpt: An engaging and accessible exploration of human anatomy, physiology, and pathology—through a holistic lens Complementary and alternative approaches to health and medicine have become increasingly widespread as the limits of conventional treatments become more apparent. Holistic Anatomy presents an authoritative study of anatomy, physiology, and pathology, but it expands the discussion by connecting the science of the body to a variety of alternative modalities to explore how human beings exist within—and interact with—their environment, and how they experience existence in emotional and spiritual terms. Author and massage therapist Pip Waller interweaves basic scientific terminology and detailed descriptions with informal—and sometimes humorous—observations, facts, and ideas about life. The mechanisms, structure, and functions of the body are explored, along with how they relate to spiritual and energetic paradigms, emotions, and ecological principles. The first half of the book covers basic anatomy and physiology, describing each major system of the body and how they interrelate. This part includes a thoughtful discussion of aging and the dying process. The second half focuses on models of health and disease, both traditional and holistic. Topics include western pathology, emotional health, five element medicine, and the spiritual cause for disease.

Book excerpt: In Discovering Your Spirit Animal, shamanic healer Lucy Harmer presents a practical approach to understanding spirit animals and applying their power to specific situations in daily life. Written in clear, simple language and featuring compelling stories and anecdotes, the book explains what a spirit animal is, describes its purpose, and shows that understanding the “medicine” of one’s spirit animal—assimilating its qualities and characteristics—allows one to apply the lessons and messages they convey and use them for personal transformation. Lucy Harmer notes that particular animals that cross one’s path or appear repeatedly nearby probably want us to share in their medicine, their teaching, their energy, and their spirit. Discovering Your Spirit Animal provides guidance for meeting and getting to know one’s spirit animal through easy exercises and shamanic techniques. Lucy Harmer explains how to discover the strengths, qualities, and skills one shares with one’s personal spirit animal, enabling one to learn how to reinforce this connection and access innate wisdom and inner power, overcome fears, increase natural healing capacity, and improve relationships.
