Book Synopsis Environmental Aspects of Dredging by : R. N. Bray
Download or read book Environmental Aspects of Dredging written by R. N. Bray and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2008-03-10 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Expanding a port, deepening a navigation channel or creating new land for development, introduces changes to our physical, social, economic and political environment. Changes may result from events during the construction process, or relate to the nature of the completed structure. Changes can be positive or negative, short-term or long-term, and may affect the immediate vicinity of the project or a larger geographical area. Predicting and assessing all possible effects of a planned dredging activity in a scientifically-sound and reliable manner is essential, so that appropriate control measures can be taken to avoid or mitigate unwelcome impacts. This book provides guidance for a complete holistic environmental evaluation procedure and for the design and implementation of environmental control measures. The book is of particular interest to engineers, government agencies and port authorities, as well as civil engineering consultants and contractors involved in planning and designing dredging, maritime infrastructure and fluvial projects.

Book Synopsis Lessons from Amazonia by : Richard O. Bierregaard
Download or read book Lessons from Amazonia written by Richard O. Bierregaard and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2001-12-11 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deforestation is occurring at an alarming rate in many parts of the world, causing destruction of natural habitat and fragmentation of what remains. Nowhere is this problem more pressing than in the Amazon rainforest, which is rapidly vanishing in the face of enormous pressure from humans to exploit it. This book presents the results of the longest-running and most comprehensive study of forest fragmentation ever undertaken, the Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragments Project (BDFFP) in central Amazonia, the only experimental study of tropical forest fragmentation in which baseline data are available before isolation from continuous forest took place.A joint project of Brazil’s National Institute for Research in Amazonia and the U.S. Smithsonian Institution, the BDFFP has investigated the many effects that habitat fragmentation has on plants, invertebrates, and vertebrates. The book provides an overview of the BDFFP, reports on its case studies, looks at forest ecology and tree genetics, and considers what issues are involved in establishing conservation and management guidelines.
Book Synopsis Aquatic Ecosystem Research Trends by : George H. Nairne
Download or read book Aquatic Ecosystem Research Trends written by George H. Nairne and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses various freshwater ecosystems and methods used for the purposes of water quality monitoring, including those utilising aquatic macrophytes. Early-established management plans provide the first steps towards sustainable management of aquatic environments. Thus, the methods used for managing aquatic plants, including mechanical or manual harvesting, hand-pulling and biological control are discussed. The removal efficiency of nutrients and of metal by macrophytes is examined, as well as the potential use of these plants in wastewater treatment. This book surveys and critically reviews existing literature regarding the presence of steroid sex hormones in freshwater ecosystems, their sources and potential fate. Discharges from wastewater treatment plants and transport from agricultural operations are also examined. Finally, this book discusses the role of NF-kB inhibitors, an inducible transcription, in marine chemical ecology, as well as its role in biomedicine.
Book Synopsis Natives and Newcomers by : Bruce G. Trigger
Download or read book Natives and Newcomers written by Bruce G. Trigger and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1986 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to convential nineteenth-century wisdom, societies of European origin were naturally progressive; native societies were static. One consequence of this attitutde was the almost universal separation of history and anthropology. Today, despite a growing interest in changes in Amerindian societies, this dichotomy continues to distort the investigation of Canadian history and to assign native peoples only a marginal place in it. Natives and Newcomers discredits that myth. In a spirited and critical re-examination of relations between the French and the Iroquoian-speaking inhabitants of the St Lawrence lowlands, from the incursions of Jacques Cartier through the explorations of Samuel de Champlain and the Jesuit missions into the early years of the royal regime, Natives and Newcomers argues that native people have played a significant role in shaping the development of Canada. Trigger also shows that the largely ignored French traders and their employees established relations with native people that were indispensable for founding a viable European colony on the St Lawrence. The brisk narrative of this period is complemented by a detailed survey of the stereotypes about native people that have influenced the development of Canadian history and anthropology and by candid discussions of how historical, ethnographical, and archaeological approaches can and cannot be combined to produce a more rounded and accurate understanding of the past.
