Book Synopsis Measured and Drawn by : D. D. Andrews
Download or read book Measured and Drawn written by D. D. Andrews and published by English Heritage. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measured and Drawn sets out to show how, through working closely with historians, conservators and archaeologists, optimum documentation can be achieved by metric survey. It explains how the balance between precision, cost and time when applying metric technologies to heritage documentation can be achieved by choosing an appropriate method and making sure project information requirements are understood by all from the start.Measured and Drawn examines control, detail and procurement, and concludes with case studies of metric survey projects undertaken on historic buildings and structures ranging from Battle Abbey Courthouse to the nave ceiling at Peterborough Cathedral. It is prepared in sequence with Where on Earth Are We? The Global Positioning System in archaeological field survey (2003), Understanding Historic Buildings: a guide to good recording practice (2006) and 3D Laser scanning for Heritage: advice and guidance to users on laser scanning in archaeology and architecture (2007) as part of an ongoing series of technical guides on heritage documentation. The second edition is prepared in response to the publication of English Heritage’s Conservation Principles: policies and guidance for the sustainable management of the historic environment (2008) which has placed documenting and learning from decisions as a core principle, with accessible records recognised as essential to the conservation process. The principles outline the need for adequate records in managing change to significant places.
Book Synopsis Resources and Applied Methods in International Relations by : Guillaume Devin
Download or read book Resources and Applied Methods in International Relations written by Guillaume Devin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book constitutes an up-to-date methodology reference work for International Relations (IR) scholars and students. The study of IR calls for the use of multiple and various tools to try and describe international phenomena, analyze and understand them, compare them, interpret them, and try to offer theoretical approaches. In a nutshell, doing research in IR requires both tools and methods—from the use of archives to the translation of results through mapping, from conducting interviews to analyzing quantitative data, from constituting a corpus to the always touchy interpretation of images and discourses. This volume assembles twenty young researchers and professors in the field of IR and political science to discuss numerous rich and thoroughly explained case studies. Merging traditional political science approaches with methods borrowed from sociology and history, it offers a clear and instructive synthesis of the main resources and applied methods to study International Relations.

Book Synopsis Surfing, Sex, Genders and Sexualities by : lisahunter
Download or read book Surfing, Sex, Genders and Sexualities written by lisahunter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-27 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sex, gender and sexuality have played an important role in shaping the culture of surfing and are central themes in the study of sport and movement cultures. Rooted in a rich precolonial history, surfing has undergone a modern transformation shaped by visual culture, commodification, sportization, mediatization and globalization, arguably all linked to sex, gender and sexuality. Using the physical culture of surfing as its focus, this international collection discusses the complex relationships between surfing, sex/es, gender/s and sexuality/ies. This book crosses new theoretical, empirical and methodological boundaries by exploring themes and issues such as indigenous histories, exploitation, the marginalized, race, ethnicity, disability, counter cultures, transgressions and queering. Offering original insights into surfing’s symbolism, postcolonialism, patriocolonial whiteness and heteronormativity, its chapters are connected by a collective aspiration to document sex/es, gender/s and sexuality/ies as they are shaped by surfing and, importantly, as they re-shape the many, possibly previously unknown, worlds of surfing. Surfing, Sex, Genders and Sexualities is fascinating reading for anybody with an interest in the sociology of sport or gender and sexuality studies.

Book Synopsis Out of the Study and Into the Field by : Robert Parkin
Download or read book Out of the Study and Into the Field written by Robert Parkin and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2010 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outside France, French anthropology is conventionally seen as being dominated by grand theory produced by writers who have done little or no fieldwork themselves, and who may not even count as anthropologists in terms of the institutional structures of French academia. This applies to figures from Durkheim to Derrida, Mauss to Foucault, though there are partial exceptions, such as Lévi-Strauss and Bourdieu. It has led to a contrast being made, especially perhaps in the Anglo-Saxon world, between French theory relying on rational inference, and British empiricism based on induction and generally skeptical of theory. While there are contrasts between the two traditions, this is essentially a false view. It is this aspect of French anthropology that this collection addresses, in the belief that the neglect of many of these figures outside France is seriously distorting our view of the French tradition of anthropology overall. At the same time, the collection will provide a positive view of the French tradition of ethnography, stressing its combination of technical competence and the sympathies of its practitioners for its various ethnographic subjects.

Book Synopsis Corpus Dialectology by : Elissa Pustka
Download or read book Corpus Dialectology written by Elissa Pustka and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2023-08-15 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corpus Dialectology combines the fields of corpus linguistics and dialectological mapping. It concerns documentation of linguistic variation and mapping of linguistic spaces and boundaries, while ascribing renewed importance to the methodology and the material itself, especially data processing and statistical analysis. This approach considers phenomena that have received little attention to date, such as migration, language contact, mobility and educational level, as well as the differentiation between rural and urban spaces. Transparently described and intersubjectively comprehensible encodings permit the enhancement of dialectometry in the context of Digital Humanities and further development of linguistic theories of variation and change, as well as different levels of structure (phonology, morphosyntax, semantics). This book contains nine chapters on ongoing corpus dialectological research projects. They discuss current issues of data collection, for example the validity of crowdsourced data, explore challenges and possibilities of data analysis and offer theoretical reflections on virtual Romance geolinguistics.

Book Synopsis Digital Technologies and African Societies by : Julien Atchoua
Download or read book Digital Technologies and African Societies written by Julien Atchoua and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-11-17 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The integration and use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in African countries is increasingly observable in various sectors of activity (banking, education, trade, etc.) despite a digital divide still relevant. ICT has become a major sector of the recent growth of a new informal economy in African cities (Chéneau-Loquay, 2008). This question has been at the heart of various international meetings. An overall positive and even utopian momentum is generally heard about the contribution of digital technologies to the development of African states. The adoption or appropriation of digital technologies by Africans is presented in many speeches by politicians or institutions involved in the field of cooperation and international development as an important issue for the development of this continent. These different considerations give rise to reflections on the following themes. - Social Media and Public Space in Africa - Challenges of the digital economy in Africa - ICT and modernization of higher education in Africa
