Download or read book La Pace E Le Azioni Umanitarie written by Ugo Genesio and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gathers the acts of the Congress on Peace and Humanitarian Actions, including the text of official statements and reports. The major themes discussed deal with the contribution of intergovernmental organizations, non-governmental organizations and the International Red Cross to peace, in particular in such fields as armed conflicts, disarmament, famine relief, human rights, migration, refugee phenomena, etc. Three of the statements are specially dedicated to the refugee problem. The first is from Mr G. Arnaout, Director of the Division of Refugee Law and Doctrine in UNHCR, who gives an overview of the humanitarian actions of the Office since its creation through its two essential functions: protection and search of solutions. The second is given by Mrs H. Taviani, France Terre d'Asile, describing the activities of this NGO in favour of refugees, mainly by helping them to be received and accommodated all over France. The third by Mrs A. Gradin, Swedish Minister of Immigration, presents the point of view of the state facing the flow of migrants and refugees and their impact on the economic, social and cultural structures of a given country.

Book Synopsis Environmental Security by : Simon Dalby
Download or read book Environmental Security written by Simon Dalby and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the end of the Cold War, environmental matters -- especially the international implications of environmental degradation -- have figured prominently in debates about rethinking security. But do the assumptions underlying such discussions hold up under close scrutiny? In this first treatment of environmental security from a truly critical perspective, Simon Dalby shows how attempts to explain contemporary insecurity falter over unexamined notions of both environment and security. Adding environmental history, aboriginal perspectives, and geopolitics to the analysis explicitly suggests that the growing disruptions caused by a carbon-fueled and expanding modernity are at the root of contemporary difficulties. Environmental Security argues that rethinking security means revisiting the question of how we conceive identities as endangered and how we perceive threats to these identities. The book clearly demonstrates that the conceptual basis for critical security studies requires an extended engagement with political theory and with the assumptions of the modern subject as progressive political agent. Viewed thus on a global scale, the environmental security discourse raises profoundly troubling political questions as to who we are and what kind of world we are collectively making in our efforts to be secure.
Download or read book Ecology as Politics written by André Gorz and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andre Gorz, to my mind the greatest of modern French social thinkers, dares to venture where no one really has before. Fighters for democratic socialism and an ecological society have each recognized the handwriting on the wall: modern society cannot continue on its present path. Neither group, however, has even begun to recognize the other's value, beyond being little more than a tactical means towards achieving their own ends. Gorz, in this exciting and penetrating gem of a book, addresses precisely this question, and offers a connection between the political and the ecological. In an age of crisis the realist becomes visionary and the visionary the rational architect of the future. Andre Gorz is just that. The present decade will be a debacle for progressive change unless our creative efforts move towards linking our concerns with the quality of life to those of economic and political structure. Andre Gorz, as this little volume bears witness, has taken up where Herbert Marcuse left off. 'The only things worthy of each, ' Gorz says, 'are those which are good for all.' This book is worthy indeed of each.
