Récemment encore, le diagnostic de surdité était fait de manière trop tardive. Les observations les plus récentes démontrent qu'un traitement adapté initié précocement dans les premiers mois de vie permet d'obtenir des résultats très positifs sur la communication et notamment l'apprentissage du langage oral. Le diagnostic et le suivi ont été modifiés par deux évolutions technologiques récentes, en effet des méthodes électrophysiologiques utilisant des appareils automatiques otoémissions acoustiques et potentiels évoqués auditifs automatisés) permettent de repérer facilement les enfants déficients auditifs dès les premiers jours de vie. A partir de ces données, la possibilité d'une prévention, basée sur un programme de dépistage néonatal systématique, a été posée. Une évaluation de faisabilité a été initiée cette année et doit aboutir dans deux ans à la mise en place d'un dépistage chez l'ensemble des nouveaux-nés sur le territoire français. Le dépistage néonatal doit repérer dans les premiers jours de vie le bébé sourd qui pourra ainsi bénéficier d'une intervention précoce des professionnels.
