This book describes how ordinary people, in the absence of formal sector jobs, hustle for a modest living; the famous ‘bargaining‘ system ordinary Kinois have developed; and how they access food, water supplies, health and education. The NGO-ization of service provision is analysed, as is the quite rare incidence of urban riots. The contributors also look at popular discourses, including street rumor, witchcraft, and attitudes to ‘big men‘ such as musicians and preachers. This is urban sociology at its best - richly empirical, unjargonized, descriptive of the lives of ordinary people, and weaving into its analysis how they see and experience life.

Drawing from more than 330 interviews and a year and a half of field research, it develops a case study of the international intervention during the Democratic Republic of the Congo's unsuccessful transition from war to peace and democracy (2003-2006). Grassroots rivalries over land, resources, and political power motivated widespread violence. However, a dominant peacebuilding culture shaped the intervention strategy in a way that precluded action on local conflicts, ultimately dooming the international efforts to end the deadliest conflict since World War II. Most international actors interpreted continued fighting as the consequence of national and regional tensions alone. UN staff and diplomats viewed intervention at the macro levels as their only legitimate responsibility. The dominant culture constructed local peacebuilding as such an unimportant, unfamiliar, and unmanageable task that neither shocking events nor resistance from select individuals could convince international actors to reevaluate their understanding of violence and intervention.

Celui-ci ne rêve que d'une chose : accroître la force de frappe économique de la Belgique en exploitant les richesses de cette terre lointaine. L'inexorable marche vers l'indépendance est émaillée de révoltes et de violences. Depuis qu il s'est défait du joug de la colonisation, le 30 juin 1960, le pays a connu des sécessions, des guerres et des assassinats politiques. Quatre présidents se sont succédé jusqu'ici aux commandes du Congo indépendant : Joseph Kasa-Vubu, Mobutu Sese Seko, Laurent-Désiré Kabila et Joseph Kabila. A chacun son style. Mais les grands défis d'hier sont presque les mêmes que ceux d'aujourd'hui. Le plus grand pays d'Afrique sub-saharienne a reculé en termes de développement et tarde à jouer le rôle qui aurait dû lui revenir tout naturellement
