Book excerpt: The author of this book, Gerard Lukken, has always believed that liturgy is not something which is unchangeable or sacrosanct, something to be imposed 'from above'; rather he believes that it must gain shape and content from the situation in which believers find themselves. This involvement is reflected in the hundreds of publications which have flowed from his pen. Lukken's extensive writings offer not only an exciting reflection on the challenges (such as secularization and the decrease in church-going) confronting church and believers, but also on the problems they have faced in celebrating their faith in recent decades. Moreover, his work represents a model for methodological renewal. The key concepts in his theological approach and his evaluation are 'anthropology' and 'semiotics'. These two aspects have left their marks on the organisation of this book which is a selective compilation drawn from his earlier publications. This collection consists of nineteen studies which have lost nothing of their topicality and most of which are now being translated into English, French or German for the first time. By crossing the frontier of language in such a way the editors wish not only to honour a leading specialist in liturgy but also to contribute to academic research into liturgy throughout the world. Gerard Lukken (1933) studied at the Diocesan Seminary in Haaren (Noord-Brabant), the Pontificia Universita in Rome, and the Institut Superieur de Liturgie in Paris. He was professor of liturgy and sacramental theology (from 1967) and director of the Liturgical Institute (from 1992) at the Theological Faculty of Tilburg until his retirement in 1994.

Source d'un nouveau "réalisme", elle permet de saisir la réalité immanente et invisible de l'acte humain en son déploiement charnel et en son lien infrangible à l'auto-donation de la vie absolue. L'éthique y devient l'éthique de la vie, identique au commandement de l'amour. A cette aune, peut alors être comprise philosophiquement l'existence dans le péché en même temps que la miséricorde promise par la vie absolue. Celle-ci se déploie dans l'économie du salut dont la théologie rend compte en raison. L'auto-donation de la vie absolue, par-delà le péché s'y accomplit dans l'acte du Christ, source et gond de toute l'histoire. Compris comme le "Se-donnant-soi-même" charnel du Verbe de vie, l'acte du Christ est dés lors la clef de la théologie morale, et l'eucharistie, en rendant cet acte présent au coeur de l'Eglise, en devient le fondement. L'acte humain, effectué dans le mémorial du Christ y trouve alors sa puissance et son intelligence. Mémoire de l'oeuvre de Dieu au coeur des actes humains, plus forte que le péché, l'Ecriture Sainte, comme l'histoire de la "chair-avec-Dieu" peut dès lors être l'âme de la théologie morale.

Central to Barth's approach is the challenge to the Christian community to see their presuppositions challenged in the most unexpected circumstances, while looking beyond human categories to affirm the dignity bestowed upon all of humanity through the divine Yes in the person Jesus Christ. Barth's theology with its starting point in the person of Jesus Christ is advocated as a framework for the members of the Christian community as they live alongside those with a different faith from their own.

C’est bien dans ce terme même de récapitulation que la théologie irénéenne trouve son principe et c’est en référence à lui qu’elle se déploie comme une « théologie de l’histoire du salut ». It was rooted in the theological tradition of ancient Israel, which was unifi ed by its historical credos and declaratory affi rmations of faith. No pre-theological era has been discovered in the New Testament or in the history of the Christian community. From the beginning Christianity has been theological, involving men in theological refl ection and calling them to declarations of faith. A non-theological Christianity has simply never endured, although such has been attempted, for instance, by individual seers in the sixteenth century and also by collaborators with totalitarian ideologies in the twentieth century. The creeds presented here range from the ancient faith of the Hebrews and the creed-like formulas of the New Testament to the Barmen declaration of 1934 (framed by the Christians in Germany who faced the threat of Nazism) and the Batak Creed of 1951 (in which Indonesian Christians gave authentic expression to their religious belief in the idiom of their own culture. All the creeds are in some sense "offi cial," and every major division of Christendom is represented, including the Younger Churches. The volume ends with the messages of the most important assemblies dealing with the Ecumenical Movement. This single volume, containing all the major theological affi rmations of the Christian community, is a source book for the study of Christian theology. It comprises a record of the Church's interpretation of the Bible in the past and an authoritative guide to its interpretation on the present. Indeed, it is a guide to an understanding of the Christian interpretation of life.
