Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lays of the Gospel This book was at first undertaken as an enlarged edition of a small work which I published several years since, under the title, "Contemplations of the Saviour." In the course of execution, however, the plan has been gradually changed; and in this volume, nothing remains of the former one, but a partial resemblance in the arrangement of the scriptural subjects, and a few of the original pieces, mostly in an altered form. The idea I have had in view, was to present such a series of illustrations, as might assist devout feeling, in the reading of the Saviour's history. With this object I have divided the Gospel history into one hundred sections, following generally the arrangement of Drs. Carpenter and Palfrey. Each section is designated by reference to the chapter from which it is taken, and to its first and last verses; and from each of these portions of scripture some passage is selected which seemed suitable for poetical development. In arranging the sections, I have endeavored, while avoiding repetition, to guard against omitting any passage of much comparative importance. In one respect a departure from the order of the Harmony seemed advisable; the facts and discourses which are there placed together at the end, as "of uncertain date," being here brought into the course of the narrative, in the places indicated by their position in the gospel of St. Luke. The difficulty of the undertaking will, perhaps, in some degree excuse the imperfections of its performance. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel in the Gospels New Testament by way of a comprehensive comparison of all its diverse points of view and variant expressions Of the Gospel. Not only so, but in this volume itself, which is but part of the proposed plan, I have recognized the fact that even within the narrower limits of the Gospels which give us our record of the Gospel, there are not only possible but actual diverse impressions of what the Gospel is; and that not only is full justice due to each such impression, taken by itself and for its own sake, but that the very fullest justice to each is the only way of arriving at the truth of all, or at the truth of the whole of which they are the complementary and neces sary parts. The one great lesson that must forerun and make ready the Christian unity of the future is this: that contraries do not necessarily contradict, nor need opposites always oppose. What we want is not to surrender or abolish our differences, but to unite and compose them. We need the truth of every va riant opinion and the light from every opposite point of view. The least fragment is right in so far as it stands for a part of the truth. It is wrong only when, as so Often, it elevates into a ground of division from the other fragments just that which in reality fits it to unite with and supplement them. What has been said may indicate at least the spirit and temper in which the study before us is sought to be conducted. I speak here, of course, only in general ities; the concrete application or use of the principles enunciated must be found and judged in the book itself. As a matter of form rather than of substance, I feel that there will be a question as to the success with which the promise of method or procedure has been carried out in the volume before us. The matter is treated in the following order: (1) the Gospel of the Common Humanity, (2) the Gospel of the Work, and (3) the Gospel of the Person of our Lord. And each of these is to be considered, as far as possible, by itself and independently of the others. There are those who hold the first of these and not the other two, or the first two and not the third - at least in the full sense in which we think Christianity includes them all. And we were under obligation to do full justice to the point of view of all. If I have succeeded but imperfectly in doing this, if I have at times, contrary to promise, run the lower position up into the higher, or anticipated the higher in the lower, it is at least a question where the responsibility lies. It may be that what I myself believe to be, not three gospels, but three aspects or stages of one and the same Gospel, may indeed be so. And it may be that they themselves do, of themselves and in spite Of us, so run up together into one, that it is impossible for us, however honest we may be in the effort to do justice to each by itself, to keep them apart; so predetermined are they, and determined, to find each its own meaning and fulfilment, not in the sep arate truth of each, but in the united and common truth of all. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Marvelous Work and a Wonder: The Gospel Restored Prefaces, as a rule, are not read, and we do not intend to bore the reader with any unaccepted matter. Perhaps, however, we may be permitted to observe that to arrive at proper opinions concerning any doctrine or denomination it is but fair that we reserve our verdict until it is heard in its own behalf. Rendering a decision previous to this would result in deprivation to self of the information sought, and do injustice to the subject considered. We are aware that time is valuable and that the sundry essential labors of life, engaging nearly all the attention, make it necessary that Whatever time there be to spare should be devoted to the most important questions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Gospel The Christ came to me one day that I was bowed down in sorrow over the sins and imperfections of our time. For in my youth I had dreamed of an ideal country, a Christian land, and lo, what I found all around me during twenty years of search, had so little of His Spirit that it seemed to me as a pagan land, where He was unknown. For, since my younger years, I tried to walk in His steps, as the shadow follows the substance, and, as I came nearer to Him, He came nearer to me, until He had His abode within my heart and was as one with me. When He abided with me and we had become more as one soul, when He had imparted to me some of His Spirit, He revealed Himself more and more. I had sowed in me the seeds of His Spirit and I reaped in return a consciousness like His. In time I became so as one with Him that I could almost see things as He would have seen them, and judge them with His judgment. Then we set out together in the walks of men, saw things as they were, and, in the silence of my conscience I heard His Spirit pronounce its judgment on our age and their shortcomings. I submitted to Him the burning questions of our time, our doubts and perplexities and, out in the world or in the silence of soul communions. He told me His opinions on them. He told me also of Himself, His mission and of the mistakes men had made about Him. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel in the New Testament The world, indeed, into which Christianity came was painfully aware of the need for salvation. Before the first Christian missionaries started out, zealous preachers of other faiths were abroad in the Roman Empire, offering their various remedies to the sick soul. Some of these remedies bore a curious family likeness to some of the most modern ways of salvation, and a brief survey of them will not lead us too far afield. The thoughts of men, in spite of all changes, tend to run in a comparatively small variety of channels; and after all, we are, in a broad View of the limitless sweep of history, not so very far removed even in time from these first-century seekers of truth. One of the needs of the time would seem to be, to translate the solid theological learning, of which there is no lack, into the vernacular of' everyday practical religion; and while steering a course between what is called plain teaching on the one hand and erudition on the other, to supply some sound and readable instruction to those who require it, on the subjects included under the common title 'the Christian Religion, ' that they may be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh them a reason of the hope that is in them, with meekness and fear. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentary on the Gospel of John One of the most eminent Biblical scholars, not alone of our country, but of our age, in imparting some of the impressions derived from a sojourn in Europe, says: "To the American Christian who travels on this part of the Continent, Tholuck is undoubtedly the most interesting person whose acquaintance he will make. He possesses a greater personal influence and reputation than any other theologian in Germany." Prof. Park in his Sketch of the Life and Character of Tholuck, makes these remarks: "As a Commentator he has many excellencies. This would be anticipated from the fact that his reading has been so various, and his memory is so retentive; from his almost unequaled facility in acquiring language, and his peculiar intimacy with the Hebrew and its cognate tongues. He is able to write and converse in a great variety of languages, as the English, Italian, Dutch, French, Spanish, Latin, Greek, Arabic, Persian and others. He is, of course, qualified to illustrate the sacred texts by a multiplicity of references; and he quotes with peculiar pertinence and effect from the Oriental, and especially from the Rabbinical writings. For a single specimen, read his comment on John vii. 37-39. The classical quotations, too, in his Commentaries, are eminently valuable." Kaufman observes in the preface to his translation of the fourth edition of Tholuck's John: "Nothing is perhaps more wanted in the theological domain than a good Commentary on the Gospels. On this part of the Bible our language affords the student little that is valuable in a critical and doctrinal view. - In commenting on St. John particularly - the Plato of the inspired circle - it requires a mind of a peculiar order. This mind Tholuck possesses: a happy combination of deep and meditative thought with a Christian heart; a quick apprehension, a glowing imagination, an accurate acquaintance with language, and a nice perception of its force, together with a clear insight into the spiritual nature of man. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Real Jesus of the Four Gospels The first part of this work is a collation of all that is said, and just what is said, in each of the four Gospels, regarding the more important incidents of Jesus' life. Every statement in the text, it is thought, is accurate, free from personal coloring or sectarian bias, and may be verified from the passages cited. After examining various lives of Jesus, harmonies of the Gospels, etc., there seemed to be need of such a work, which would furnish simply the facts, and leave the reader to form his own conclusions. Certain notes are appended in elucidation of or comment on the text, and these may be taken for what they are worth. Their underlying idea is, that the true greatness of Jesus lay in His being a human Teacher and not a Divine Redeemer, and therefore the supernatural parts of the Gospel story are not of vital importance. The King James version has been used, since that has been the Bible of English-speaking peoples up to the present century, and their conceptions of Jesus have been formed from it, and not from the revised version. The differences between the two versions are probably not material to any matter herein discussed. The second part is an attempt to point out, and comment on, the many and wide divergences that have grown up between the preachings of Jesus and the practices of His professed followers. Its object is not to criticise the short-comings of Christianity, but to bring home to the people of the United States a realization of the practical effect which these divergences have had, and are now having, on political and economic questions of high import to the present and future welfare of mankind.
