Book Synopsis Fulfilling the Law and the Prophets by : Matthew Anslow
Download or read book Fulfilling the Law and the Prophets written by Matthew Anslow and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-07-18 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Matthew’s Gospel makes mention of prophets and prophecy more than any other canonical Gospel. Yet its perspective on prophecy has generally been neglected within biblical scholarship when, in fact, Jesus’ prophetic vocation is a central christological theme for Matthew. This new study by Matthew Anslow seeks to draw attention to this underdeveloped focus within Matthean studies. The central claim of the book is that in Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus’ prophetic vocation is presented as a multi-faceted phenomenon, drawing on several prophetic traditions. Like biblical and popular prophets before him, Jesus is depicted by Matthew as calling Israel back to covenantal faithfulness, thereby providing guidance for the identity, theology, and communal life of God’s people.

Book Synopsis Paul's 'Works of the Law' in the Perspective of Second Century Reception by : Matthew J. Thomas
Download or read book Paul's 'Works of the Law' in the Perspective of Second Century Reception written by Matthew J. Thomas and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2018-07-24 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul writes that we are justified by faith apart from 'works of the law', a disputed term that represents a fault line between 'old' and 'new' perspectives on Paul. Was the Apostle reacting against the Jews' good works done to earn salvation, or the Mosaic Law's practices that identified the Jewish people? Matthew J. Thomas examines how Paul's second century readers understood these points in conflict, how they relate to 'old' and 'new' perspectives, and what their collective witness suggests about the Apostle's own meaning. Surprisingly, these early witnesses align closely with the 'new' perspective, though their reasoning often differs from both viewpoints. They suggest that Paul opposes these works neither due to moralism, nor primarily for experiential or social reasons, but because the promised new law and covenant, which are transformative and universal in scope, have come in Christ.

Book Synopsis THE PROPHETIC PARABLES OF MATTHEW 13 by : A.W Pink

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We purpose giving a series of studies on the thirteenth chapter of Matthew, which, in the writer's judgment, is, from the standpoint of prophecy, the most important chapter of all the New Testament. There is much in God's prophetic program which must necessarily remain dark until the parables of this chapter are thoroughly mastered. At present they are much misunderstood and misinterpreted. It will be found that in Matthew 13:10, 11 the Lord Jesus has designated these seven parables ""mysteries of the kingdom of heaven."" This expression ""the kingdom of heaven"" comprehends in a brief form the contents of the whole chapter. This will be seen by a reference to verses 24, 31, 33, etc., where it will be found that each of the last six parables begin with ""the kingdom of heaven is like unto."" What is meant by this expression? There is perhaps no term in Scripture used so extensively, but which is so little understood. Though it is found in Matthew's Gospel only, yet it occurs there no less than thirty-two times.

Book excerpt: The New Testament Scriptures will never be properly understood by a person if the Old Testament Scriptures essentially remain a mystery to him,' says Paul Benware. Most Christians do not have a clear understanding of the pattern, unity, or progression of the Old Testament. They can tell stories of Moses, Noah, and David but aren't sure how all these events fit together. And they don't fully appreciate the doctrines found in the thirty-nine books between Genesis and Malachi. But the Old Testament does not have to be mysterious or confusing. Newly revised, Dr. Benware offers a chronological approach to give you a bird's-eye view of the historic value of the Old Testament, while his book-by-book analysis reveals important details and emphases. If you want a better understanding of the whole Bible, Survey of the Old Testament is the place to start.

Book excerpt: Jesus Christ came to earth in order to "fulfil" "the law" and "the prophets" (Matthew 5:17). If there is one book in the New Testament that draws attention to such fulfillment, then it is the gospel of Matthew. What prophecy is fulfilled in Matthew? Jesus was born of a virgin in Bethlehem (where children were murdered), named "Emmanuel," taken "out of Egypt," and "called a Nazarene" (Matthew 1:23, 2:15, 2:23). John the Baptist came before him "in the spirit and power of Elias" to "prepare ... the way of the Lord" (Matthew 3:3; Luke 1:17). Jesus brought light to Galilee, healed the sick, spoke in parables, and revealed the Pharisees' hypocrisy. His presence divided families even as he "shew[ed] judgment to the Gentiles" (Matthew 12:18). Jesus rode a donkey into Jerusalem, where he received praise from "babes and sucklings" (21:16). He was "rejected" by the Jews and betrayed for "thirty pieces of silver," used to buy "the potter's field"; his disciples "scattered" (21:42, 26:15, 26:31, 27:7). On the cross, Jesus asked God why he had been "forsaken," while Roman soldiers "cast lots" for his clothes (27:35, 27:46). Jesus spent "three days and three nights in the heart of the earth" (12:40). Then he "rose from the dead" (28:7).As recorded in Matthew, in his birth, ministry, and death "the prophet of Nazareth" fulfilled nearly 30 prophecies from 11 Old Testament books (Matthew 21:11). Matthew did not draw attention to every fulfilled prophecy, e.g. the fact that Jesus "made his grave ... with the rich in his death" (Isaiah 53:9; see Matthew 27:57-60). What he did emphasize was Jesus' identity as "King of the Jews" (Matthew 2:2, 27:11, 27:29, 27:37). All four gospels use this phrase in the passion narrative. Only in Matthew does "King of the Jews" appear in the narrative of Jesus' birth. The writer's message is clear: whom the Jews "crucified," the wise men "worshipped" (2:11, 27:35).In this short book, fulfilled prophecies are listed as alphabetical entries in chapters organized around the three stages of Jesus' life (birth, ministry, and death). Bethlehem, Elijah, Emmanuel, Jonah: these and 20 other words are defined and explained in the context of fulfilled prophecy.
