Book Synopsis Laurentian University by : Matt Bray
Download or read book Laurentian University written by Matt Bray and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 19 September 1960 - the very first day of classes at Laurentian University - the Sudbury Star editorialized about what it called "the greatest experiment ever undertaken in Canadian higher education." Given the new university's bilingual and tri-cultural mandate, and religious complexities, the Star predicted there would inevitably be tensions and setbacks but that with cooperation, goodwill, and understanding, there would also be major accomplishments. This study, by five Laurentian members of faculty - four historians and one sociologist - explores the many ways in which this prognostication proved accurate, on both scores, over the next half-century.

Download or read book The Handbook of Canadian Boarding Schools written by Ashley Thomson and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 1999-09-01 with total page 653 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Private schools have frequently provided innovative, experimental, and creative programunavailable to students in the public system. The most successful have survived and expanded by offering an educational experience widely perceived to be not just as good as that available in the public system, but better. In Canada, private schools are enjoying an unprecedented popularity and while most are day-only, over sixty sustain boarding programs, as do two off-shore Canadian schools. The Handbook of Canadian Boarding Schools presents information on the educational environment of each province, then offers comparative information on each boarding school. The information on each school includes: basic data, location, history, philosophy, the campus, boarding facilities, health and safety, administration and faculty, student body and student conduct, academic calendar and program, information technology, student activities and student conduct, admission and costs. The Handbook also supplies several appendices outlining important programs often available through boarding schools, such as Advanced Placement courses and the International Baccalaureate. For parents in Canada and abroad about to commit substantial sums to their children’s education, the Handbook of Canadian Boarding Schools is an essential tool to help them make the right decision. It is also an indispensable resource for supporters of the public system looking for ideas that have worked elsewhere.

Book Synopsis From Meteorite Impact to Constellation City by : Oiva W. Saarinen
Download or read book From Meteorite Impact to Constellation City written by Oiva W. Saarinen and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2013-06-15 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Meteorite Impact to Constellation City is a historical geography of the City of Greater Sudbury. The story that began billions of years ago encompasses dramatic physical and human events. Among them are volcanic eruptions, two meteorite impacts, the ebb and flow of continental glaciers, Aboriginal occupancy, exploration and mapping by Europeans, exploitation by fur traders and Canadian lumbermen and American entrepreneurs, the rise of global mining giants, unionism, pollution and re-greening, and the creation of a unique constellation city of 160,000. The title posits the book’s two main themes, one physical in nature and the other human: the great meteorite impact of some 1.85 billion years ago and the development of Sudbury from its inception in 1883. Unlike other large centres in Canada that exhibit a metropolitan form of development with a core and surrounding suburbs, Sudbury developed in a pattern resembling a cluster of stars of differing sizes. Many of Sudbury’s most characteristic attributes are undergoing transformation. Its rocky terrain and the negative impact from mining companies are giving way to attractive neighbourhoods and the planting of millions of trees. Greater Sudbury’s blue-collar image as a union powerhouse in a one-industry town is also changing; recent advances in the fields of health, education, retailing, and the local and international mining supply and services sector have greatly diversified its employment base. This book shows how Sudbury evolved from a village to become the regional centre for northeastern Ontario and a global model for economic diversification and environmental rehabilitation.
