Download or read book The Flavonoids written by J. B. Harborne and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major purpose ofthis third volume in The Flavonoidsseries is to provide a detailed review of progress in the field during the five years, 1981-1985 inclusive. It thus continues the comprehensive coverage of the literature on these fascinating and important plant pigments which began in 1975 with the publication of The Flavonoids and which was followed in 1982 with The Flavonoids: Advances in Research. As with the two previous vo1umes, this one is entire1y se1f-contained and where necessary tabu1ar data and references from earlier vo1umes are included and expanded here. A unique feature is the complete listing in the Appendix ofall known flavonoids, which now number over 4000 structures; in this list, structures newly reported during the period 1981-1985 are so indicated. The first ten chaptersofthis book provide a critical review ofthe new substancesthat have been discovered among each of the main classes of flavonoid during the period under review. Again, the numberofnew isoflavonoids reported outweighs that ofother classesand ahundred pagesare needed to describe all the nove1 findings. Neoflavonoids, which were omitted in the first supplement, have been included again and a special chapter on miscellaneous flavonoids has been introduced to cope with those structures (e.g. homoisoflavonoids) which do not fit in easily anywhere else. Although there have been advances in flavonoid methodology, these have not been asspectacular as in earlier years. Hence, literature reports on new chromatographic and spectral procedures are included here in the individual chapters under the different flavonoid classes.

Book Synopsis Flowering Plants · Dicotyledons by : Klaus Kubitzki
Download or read book Flowering Plants · Dicotyledons written by Klaus Kubitzki and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 663 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume - the first of this series dealing with angiosperms - comprises the treatments of 73 families, representing three major blocks of the dicotyledons: magnoliids, centrosperms, and hamamelids. These blocks are generally recognized as subclasses in modern textbooks and works of reference. We consider them a convenient means for structuring the hundreds of di cotyledon families, but are far from taking them at face value for biological, let alone mono phyletic entities. Angiosperm taxa above the rank of family are little consolidated, as is easily seen when comparing various modern classifications. Genera and families, in contrast, are comparatively stable units -and they are important in practical terms. The genus is the taxon most frequently recognized as a distinct entity even by the layman, and generic names provide the key to all in formation available about plants. The family is, as a rule, homogeneous enough to conve niently summarize biological information, yet comprehensive enough to avoid excessive re dundance. The emphasis in this series is, therefore, primarily on families and genera.

Book Synopsis Voices from the Forest by : Malcolm Cairns
Download or read book Voices from the Forest written by Malcolm Cairns and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 854 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook of locally based agricultural practices brings together the best of science and farmer experimentation, vividly illustrating the enormous diversity of shifting cultivation systems as well as the power of human ingenuity. Environmentalists have tended to disparage shifting cultivation (sometimes called 'swidden cultivation' or 'slash-and-burn agriculture') as unsustainable due to its supposed role in deforestation and land degradation. However, a growing body of evidence indicates that such indigenous practices, as they have evolved over time, can be highly adaptive to land and ecology. In contrast, 'scientific' agricultural solutions imposed from outside can be far more damaging to the environment. Moreover, these external solutions often fail to recognize the extent to which an agricultural system supports a way of life along with a society's food needs. They do not recognize the degree to which the sustainability of a culture is intimately associated with the sustainability and continuity of its agricultural system. Unprecedented in ambition and scope, Voices from the Forest focuses on successful agricultural strategies of upland farmers. More than 100 scholars from 19 countries--including agricultural economists, ecologists, and anthropologists--collaborated in the analysis of different fallow management typologies, working in conjunction with hundreds of indigenous farmers of different cultures and a broad range of climates, crops, and soil conditions. By sharing this knowledge--and combining it with new scientific and technical advances--the authors hope to make indigenous practices and experience more widely accessible and better understood, not only by researchers and development practitioners, but by other communities of farmers around the world.
Book Synopsis Coevolution and Systematics by : A. R. Stone
Download or read book Coevolution and Systematics written by A. R. Stone and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1986 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ideas and rules on the systematics of parasite groups, and to a lesser extent their hosts, have been influenced by the assumption that coevolution between parasites and hosts has resulted in parallel traits in their phylogenies, which, in turn, may be reflected in their systematics. The essays in this volume include studies of plant, insect, and vertebrate parasite groups and their hosts. The authors relate their findings to the implications of coevolutionary phenomena for the systematics of the organisms involved, and offer conclusions on the applicability of parasitological rules.

Book Synopsis Geographic Distribution of the Pines of the World by : William Burke Critchfield
Download or read book Geographic Distribution of the Pines of the World written by William Burke Critchfield and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scope of this publication is limited to mappable information about where pines grow naturally at present. We have not tried to relate present distribution to the fossil record, nor have we tried to indicate the ecological and historical factors controlling species distribution. The elevations at which pines grow are mentioned only in the most general terms; this aspect of distribution is intimately related to latitude, topography, and other features of the local environment.
