Book excerpt: The result of a 2-year research study funded under the National English Literacy Demonstration Program for Adults of Limited English Proficiency, this handbook on adult English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) literacy education represents a synthesis of ideas derived from various sources. It is meant as a resource for teachers who have some experience in teaching but are new to ESL literacy. It contains the following nine chapters: (1) "Adult ESL Literacy: State of the Art," which discusses some of the special features of adult ESL literacy; (2) "Approaches and Materials," which maintains that meaning-based approaches show the greatest promise in helping adults develop full literacy; (3) "Teaching Adult ESL Literacy in the Multilevel Classroom," which shows that group work is the most effective strategy for dealing with multilevel classrooms; (4) "Using Computer and Video Technology in Adult ESL Literacy," which discusses the pros and cons of using technology in ESL literacy teaching; (5) "Native Language Literacy," which demonstrates that using the native language of the learners is a viable approach to introducing literacy to adults who are not literate in their first language; (6) "Learner Assessment," which shows that program-based assessments are superior to standardized tests; (7) "Curriculum," which demonstrates that curriculum decisions are value decisions that mirror a program's philosophy; (8) "Staff Development and Program Issues," which holds that effective staff development should focus on the social context, adult learning, second language acquisition, literacy development, and effective teaching processes; and (9) "Curriculum Modules," which presents 10 teaching units that demonstrate meaning-based teaching. Book Synopsis Teaching Word Recognition Skills by : Lee Ann Rinsky
Download or read book Teaching Word Recognition Skills written by Lee Ann Rinsky and published by Prentice Hall. This book was released on 1996-09 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A core or supplement for undergraduate/graduate-level courses in Elementary Reading Methods, Introductory Reading, or Diagnostic Reading. This classroom-proven text prepares both pre-service and in-service teachers for the teaching and assessment of all word recognition skills. Balanced in approach, it incorporates the best from traditional approaches and whole language, and unlike many texts that focus only on phonics it encompasses all of the important word recognition areas: phonics, sight words, roots, affixes, word families, the use of context, and use of the dictionary. It facilitates the learning of word recognition skills and provides model lessons and activities to help teachers teach these skills to students and classrooms in elementary and middle schools. In addition, the book stresses the need to adapt and modify word recognition strategies as children progress through the grades.

Previously unpublished materials appear alongside published writings by and about the Eameses and their work, lending new insight into their creative process. Correspondence with such luminaries as Richard Neutra and Eero Saarinen provides a personal glimpse into the advance of modernity in mid-century America.
Book Synopsis Classical Rhetoric in the Middle Ages by : John O. Ward
Download or read book Classical Rhetoric in the Middle Ages written by John O. Ward and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-12-24 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classical Rhetoric in the Middle Ages: The Medieval Rhetors and Their Art 400-1300, with Manuscript Survey to 1500 CE is a completely updated version of John Ward’s much-used doctoral thesis of 1972, and is the definitive treatment of this fundamental aspect of medieval and rhetorical culture. It is commonly believed that medieval writers were interested only in Christian truth, not in Graeco-Roman methods of ‘persuasion’ to whatever viewpoint the speaker / writer wanted. Dr Ward, however, investigates the content of well over one thousand medieval manuscripts and shows that medieval writers were fully conscious of and much dependent upon Graeco-Roman rhetorical methods of persuasion. The volume then demonstrates why and to what purpose this use of classical rhetoric took place.

Book excerpt: This teacher's guide contains suggestions and lessons for teaching reading and writing to North American adults learning English as a second language. It can also be used to help English-speaking adults gain literacy skills. The guide introduces tutors to teaching "emergency English"--essential vocabulary and conversations (dialogues) on day-to-day topics that newcomers will find immediately helpful. The guide contains six chapters. The first chapter explains the role of the tutor and provides tutoring hints, while chapter 2 provides background information on the English language. In chapters 3 and 4, the tutor is taken step-by-step through the processes of teaching and writing a lesson, while chapter 5 contains 25 lesson outlines. These outlines cover teaching everyday living skills including foods, telling time, money, shopping, cooking, calendars, families, measuring, maps, transportation, asking questions, using the telephone, household items, mail, describing people, personal health, clothing, jobs, checks and money orders, housing, paying bills, and the seasons. Drills and exercises are included in the lessons. The final chapter of the guide contains 50 lessons on pronunciation of the sounds of English. Appendixes to the guide provide a lesson plan worksheet and a bibliography. (This teaching guide is designed to be used with the student Emergency English Workbook.) (KC)
