Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latinas in the United States: A Historical Encyclopedia records the contribution of women of Latin American birth or heritage to the economic and cultural development of the United States. The encyclopedia, edited by Vicki L. Ruiz and Virginia Sánchez-Korrol, is the first comprehensive gathering of scholarship on Latinas. This encyclopedia will serve as an essential reference for decades to come. In more than 580 entries, the historical and cultural narratives of Latinas come to life. From mestizo settlement, pioneer life, and diasporic communities, the encyclopedia details the contributions of women as settlers, comadres, and landowners, as organizers and nuns. More than 200 scholars explore the experiences of Latinas during and after EuroAmerican colonization and conquest; the early-19th-century migration of Puerto Ricans and Cubans; 20th-century issues of migration, cultural tradition, labor, gender roles, community organization, and politics; and much more. Individual biographical entries profile women who have left their mark on the historical and cultural landscape. With more than 300 photographs, Latinas in the United States offers a mosaic of historical experiences, detailing how Latinas have shaped their own lives, cultures, and communities through mutual assistance and collective action, while confronting the pressures of colonialism, racism, discrimination, sexism, and poverty. "Meant for scholars and general readers, this is a great resource on Latinas and historical topics connected with them." -- curledup.com

Book Synopsis Dangerous Anarchist Strikers by : Steve J. Shone
Download or read book Dangerous Anarchist Strikers written by Steve J. Shone and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-11-13 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the ideas of three largely forgotten radical women who participated in labor union strikes in Argentina and Uruguay, Canada, and the United States: Virginia Bolten (c.1876-1960), one of the most militant anarchists of southern South America; Helen Armstrong (1875-1947), a major leader of the Winnipeg General Strike of 1919, whose involvement in that important event in Canadian history was, for a long time, obscured by accounts that emphasized the accomplishments of men; and Elizabeth Gurley Flynn (1890-1964), the Wobbly leader who directed many industrial strikes throughout the United States, and was one of the founders of the American Civil Liberties Union, who eventually became the leader of the Communist Party, USA. It also examines the contributions of two similarly neglected anarchist men who participated in labor union strikes and industrial action in New Zealand, Australia, Chile, Argentina, and Japan. Tom Barker (1887-1970) was an anarchist who eventually became a socialist who worked to promote labor unionism on four continents and who tried to create a global One Big Union for sailors. Kōtoku, Shūsui (1871-1911) was a liberal who became a socialist and finally an anarchist. An opponent of governmental imperialism and ecological mismanagement, he studied and translated the works of Western thinkers and sought to apply what he learned from other cultures to the development of Japan.

Book Synopsis Women Authors of Modern Hispanic South America by : Sandra Messinger Cypess
Download or read book Women Authors of Modern Hispanic South America written by Sandra Messinger Cypess and published by Metuchen, N.J. : Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bibliography lists references to critical and interpretive studies of the literary output of 169 major and minor Hispanic South American women writers active from the turn of the twentieth century to the present. The studies cover all literary genres and take the form of monographs, essays in collections, periodical articles, conference proceedings, and doctoral dissertations. The number of authors included and the number of studies cited challenge the belief that there are few women authors and that criticism has ignored these women.
Book Synopsis Ladina Social Activism in Guatemala City, 1871-1954 by : Patricia Harms
Download or read book Ladina Social Activism in Guatemala City, 1871-1954 written by Patricia Harms and published by University of New Mexico Press. This book was released on 2020-05-01 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking new study on ladinas in Guatemala City, Patricia Harms contests the virtual erasure of women from the country’s national memory and its historical consciousness. Harms focuses on Spanish-speaking women during the “revolutionary decade” and the “liberalism” periods, revealing a complex, significant, and palpable feminist movement that emerged in Guatemala during the 1870s and remained until 1954. During this era ladina social activists not only struggled to imagine a place for themselves within the political and social constructs of modern Guatemala, but they also wrestled with ways in which to critique and identify Guatemala’s gendered structures within the context of repressive dictatorial political regimes and entrenched patriarchy. Harms’s study of these women and their struggles fills a sizeable gap in the growing body of literature on women’s suffrage, social movements, and political culture in modern Latin America. It is a valuable addition to students and scholars studying the rich history of the region.

Book Synopsis The Routledge Hispanic Studies Companion to Nineteenth-Century Latin America by : Agnes Lugo-Ortiz
Download or read book The Routledge Hispanic Studies Companion to Nineteenth-Century Latin America written by Agnes Lugo-Ortiz and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-29 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Hispanic Studies Companion to Nineteenth-Century Latin America provides a unique, comprehensive, and critical overview of Latin American studies in the nineteenth century, including the major regions and subfields. The essays in this collection offer a complex, yet accessible transdisciplinary overview of the heterogeneous and asynchronous historical, political, and cultural processes that account for the becoming of Latin America in the nineteenth century—from Mexico and the Caribbean Basin to the Southern Cone. The thematic division of the book into six parts allows for a better understanding of the ways in which different themes are interrelated and affords readers the opportunity to draw their own connections among subfields. The volume assembles a robust sample of recent and innovative scholarship on the subject, reformulating from fresh perspectives commonly held views on the issues that characterized the era. Additionally, it provides an overarching analysis of the field and introduces cutting-edge concepts all within one expansive volume, opening the dialogue about topics that share common denominators and modeling how those topics can be approached from a variety of perspectives. The innovative volume will be of interest to students and scholars of Latin American studies and Spanish studies. Readers unfamiliar with the period will acquire a comprehensive view of its complexities, while specialists will discover new interpretations and archives.
