Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin Composition for Classes Reading Caesar This little book has grown out of a need felt in my own Caesar classes for some easy but systematic work in Latin Composition. Its purpose is not to present in most comprehensive fashion all the peculiarities of Latin syntax, but by constant repetition to fix in the student's mind some of the simplest constructions of nouns and verbs. All special grammatical notes in the several lessons have been omitted, that the pupil may early form the habit of constant reference to his grammar. Since the book is to be used in connection with Caesar, the constructions emphasized are those recurring most frequently in his text. Imperatives and independent subjunctives have therefore been lightly touched upon. The more difficult varieties of final and consecutive clauses and of relative sentences have been purposely omitted, from the conviction that the child should understand the rule before he considers its exceptions. The finding of phrases illustrative of the principles of syntax introduced in each lesson has been left to the teacher as a valuable class-room exercise. It has been my own practice to have the sections marked "Class Work" written without the aid of the grammar, making each pupil depend for forms and rules entirely upon his own memory. I have also found that a clear tabular statement of the principles studied, with the proper references to the grammar, is of great help in reviewing. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin Composition, Vol. 1: Based on Caesar My book is short. I allow myself a longer preface than is usual, since its plan differs considerably from the plans of its predecessors. The problem of the best handling of Latin composition is confessedly a hard one; and, of all years, the second year of the high-school course presents the greatest difficulty. In no field are the existing materials for Latin study so unsatisfactory. In the first place, our books give us, on the average, at least three times as many lessons as can actually be used. The necessity to which the teacher is put of omitting two-thirds of the material seriously impairs any merits which the general plan of a book may possess, and makes impossible, for either him or his pupils, a feeling of definite accomplishment at the end. In the second place, while some connected prose is now included in all the books, the matter for translation in those lessons which provide syntactical treatment, and from which, accordingly, the teacher will naturally make his selections for class work, consists of disconnected sentences, often mean ingless or even absurd, and not infrequently in direct contra diction to the statements, of the Latin author on whom they are supposed to be based. Seemingly, too, the writers of our books have taken little account of the Opportunity given by the Latin author here and there for an especially effective illustration of constructions, and have also had no thought for the gradual developing of an organic syntactical whole. It is no wonder if the entire business of writing Latin seems to the student dull and unreal, and if this dullness and unreality are reflected back upon the reading of his Latin author. The present book is conceived upon a different plan. The points which I have had especially in mind are the following. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin Composition, Vol. 1: For Secondary Schools, Based on Caesar Schools differ so greatly in the amount of time given to Latin composition that it is impossible to make a manual of a size that will suit all conditions. Many schools will find it pos sible to finish all of Part I. For such as do not take it all, it would be well to go at least as far as The Syntax of Nouns, Lesson LXXXVII. This subject is taken up more fully in Part II and may be deferred until that time. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin Composition This book of exercises in Latin Composition is designed to accompany the Caesar selections in "Second Year Latin." A sufficient amount of material has been prepared for drill in composition during the Caesar year. Following the method most in vogue, the exercises are based on the text for vocabulary, idioms, and general principles of sentence structure. In the presentation of the syntax, however, an important departure has been made, which will, I trust, commend itself to thoughtful teachers. Instead of following the chance or caprice of the text, the syntax has been presented in a systematic and orderly manner. The constructions in the special parts of the text upon which the respective exercises are based, arc used only so far as they fit into this plan. The knowledge of syntax which comes to pupils from reading an author, or by repeating in prose composition the constructions as found in the text, is analytic and partial in its character, and needs to be crystallized by a synthetic study of syntactical principles. My experience has been that pupils are not able to synthesize this analytic knowledge for themselves; and that while having a fairly good knowledge of different parts, they do not know the subject as a whole, nor the relations of the parts to each other. It is hoped that the following exercises will be found to possess such advantages as are to be drawn from following the text, with none of the disadvantages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Preparatory Latin Composition This book has grown out of the author's own experience, and has been prepared in accordance with the most advanced methods Of teaching Latin composition. The exercises are designed and graded to accompany the daily work Of translation, and contain ample material for the fullest preparatory course. The book contains connected passages based on each chapter of the first four books of Caesar and on six orations of Cicero; there are also supple mentary exercises for sight tests. The great aim in Latin composition is so to fix in the mind of the pupil the idioms, constructions, and style of the Latin that he can translate more rapidly, correctly, and intelligently. Therefore the exercises to be written in Latin should contain the idioms, constructions, and style of the Latin which the pupil is reading at the time. But it is to be further remembered that all knowledge comes from Observation and comparison. And all exercises for practice in schools should be so prepared as to require Observation and comparison on.the part of pupils. The advantages and defects of both plans are recognized; the present work attempts to combine the two methods in such a way as to pre serve the advantages and avoid the defects of each. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Latin Composition This book is a revision of the author's "Exercises in Latin Prose Composition," with certain important additions which have been suggested by his own experience and that of many of his fellow teachers. The former work was prepared "in the belief that Latin composition can best be taught directly in connection with the reading of the Latin authors. Its purpose is to furnish pupils with sufficient material for oral and written practice in Latin composition while reading Caesar and Cicero. Its method contemplates the study and recitation of the oral exercises as a part of each day's lesson, either in the advance or the daily review (preferably the latter), and of the written exercises at stated periods corresponding to the progress of the class in the Latin text, - the important thing being to have both oral and written work done while the passages on which they are based are fresh in the mind. The text thus furnishes the vocabulary, the models for all the idioms, the principles of syntax, and the order and arrangement of words." His own later experience, the verdict of a multitude of his fellow teachers, the attitude of the universities and colleges of highest rank, the reports of the various Latin conferences, as well as the recent flattering imitations of his text-book, afford a very convincing endorsement of this purpose and method. It is confidently expected, however, that the changes and additions that have been made in this revision will render the work still more effective. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Matriculation Latin This book contains the Caesar and Virgil required for pass University Matriculation, besides a considerable amount of prose Latin for practice in sight reading. It contains also a statement of the principles of Latin syntax, together with exercises in prose composition based on Caesar. This inclusion of selections from both prose and poetry in the same volume is attended with certain advantages, and is not altogether a new departure, as the plan has been followed in recent years in more than one excellent work published in England and the United States for pupils at this stage. Since the character of the work required, in future, of pupils preparing for the examination in Latin for University Matriculation and Junior Teachers is materially changed, the book has been pre pared mainly with a View to meeting the new requirements. According to the new prescription, Special importance is to be attached to the translation at sight of passages of average ditfi culty from Caesar. The prescribed portion of Caesar, while of an amount sufficient to prepare the pupil for the test of his knowl edge of Latin Syntax and his power of idiomatic translation, is obviously too small to give sufficient practice in sight reading. Accordingly, the story of Caesar's Conquest of Gaul (books I. - IV.) has been given in, as far as practicable, Caesar's own language. This has been reduced in amount to somewhat more than the length of an average book of Caesar, by the elimination of digressions, by the omission or modification of passages of more than average difficulty, and in the earlier sections by a certain measure of simplification. These simplified sections would also serve admirably for an easy transition from the introductory book to the reading of Caesar.
