Download or read book Evaluation of Wide Edgelines on Two-lane Rural Roads written by Benjamin H. Cottrell and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of 8-in. wide edgelines on the incidence of run-off-the road (ROR) and related accidents was evaluated. The treatment locations consisted of three two-lane rural road sections totaling 55.2 miles. A before-and-after design with a comparison group, and a check for comparability were used to analyze data. Five years of accident data, covering the three years before wide edgeline installation and the two years after installation, were used. It was concluded that there is no evidence to indicate that wide edgelines significantly affected the incidence of ROR and related accidents for any individual treatment location or for the locations combined. The related accidents include ROR accidents involving driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, ROR accidents on curves, ROR accidents during darkness, and opposite-direction accidents. Consequently, it was recommended that wide edgelines not be considered as a countermeasure for ROR accidents in Virginia.

Book Synopsis Lateral Placement of Vehicles on Curves of Two-lane Rural Roads as Safety Criterion by :
Download or read book Lateral Placement of Vehicles on Curves of Two-lane Rural Roads as Safety Criterion written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study focused on an in-depth examination of the driver behavior when driving through a curve on two-lane rural roads. Special attention was given to the lateral placement of the vehicles dependent on the optical impression of the curve and the roadside features, as well as on the general driving behavior, such as speed and acceleration/deceleration. In order to obtain the lateral placement of a vehicle passing through a curve a new method using video technique was developed at the Technical University of Dresden, Germany. This new aproach allows the exact determination of the lateral placement of a vehicle on every possible cross section of the curve. Consequently the calculation of the frequency distribution on spots of interest and the driven path of vehicles negotiating horizontal curves will be possible. Conflict areas, caused by critical encroachments of the centerline or the edgelines could be easy and anable detected directly on the computer screen and drawing by plots. This new developed method was applied on three curves with different horizontal and vertical geometric alinements as well as different roadside features. The results reveal that the driven path can be very different from the built curve radius, according to the variations in lateral placement as vehicles approach and traverse curves. A further result of the study is the fact that excessive speeds often caused critical driving maneuvers and consequently lead to conflict areas especially with the opposing traffic. One of the main issues of this study was also the development of quantitative safety factors to evaluate the safety level of curves depending on the driving behavior as well as on the geometrical and roadside features of the curves. These new developed procedure was also applied in a case study. For the covering abstract of this conference see IRRD number 872978.

Book Synopsis A Study on the Lateral Placement of Automobiles Due to Restrictions on Two-lane Rural Highways by : Warren Chip Woods
Download or read book A Study on the Lateral Placement of Automobiles Due to Restrictions on Two-lane Rural Highways written by Warren Chip Woods and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The driver of an isolated vehicle on a given section of highway, whether it is urban or rural, will choose a path on the pavement that offers the least resistance to driver effort and which to him seems safest. Lateral obstructions, such as retaining walls, trees, bridge abutments, ect., which may cause him to deviate from the desired path represent some degree of hazard to the driver and should be removed, if practicle. The purpose of this investigation was to determine any change in the lateral placement of automobiles due to side restrictions on rural two-way, two-lane highways. Phase one of the study concerned two bridges on U.S. Highway 63 near Rolla, Missouri, that differed only in the amount of lateral clearance between the edge of the traffic lane and its corresponding bridge abutment. Phase two of the investigation concerned a bridge near Newburg, Missouri, and the change caused by reflectorizing the bridge abutments for better night visibility. The results of phase one showed that by increasing the amount of offset between the traffic lane edge and the bridge abutment, drivers positioned their vehicle more correctly within their lane. For the purpose of this investigation, a vehicle is considered correctly positioned within its lane when the vehicle is centered in the lane; that is, there is an equal distance from the pavement center line to the left edge of the left tire and from the right edge of the right tire to the right edge of the traffic lane. In phase two of the investigation, it was determined that the reflectorization of the bridge abutments was benefitial in that drivers positioned their vehicle more correctly within its lane"--Abstract, pages ii-iii.
Book Synopsis Impact of Edge Lines on Safety of Rural Two-lane Highways by : Xiaoduan Sun
Download or read book Impact of Edge Lines on Safety of Rural Two-lane Highways written by Xiaoduan Sun and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study compiled an inventory of rural two-lane highways under the operation of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), investigated typical dimensions and characteristics of such roadways, and utilized this information to perform a detailed accident statistic analysis. Crash statistics comparisons were made for highways with and without edge lines. In addition to general accident frequency analysis, varying traffic lane and shoulder widths, and roadway curvature, factors such as accident type, intersection presence, light condition, surface condition, crash-supporting factors, severity, driver age, and driver gender were considered.

This book was released on 2011 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Roadside Design Guide presents a synthesis of current information and operating practices related to roadside safety and is written in dual units-metric and U.S. Customary. This book is a guide. It is not a standard, nor is it a design policy. It is intended to use as a resource document from which individual highway agencies can develop standards and policies. Although much of the material in the guide can be considered universal in its application, several recommendations are subjective in nature and may need modification to fit local conditions. However, it is important that significant deviations from the guide be based on operational experience and objective analysis. The 2011 edition of the AASHTO Roadside Design Guide has been updated to include hardware that has met the evaluation criteria contained in the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 350: Recommended Procedures for the Safety Performance Evaluation of Highway Features and begins to detail the most current evaluation criteria contained under the Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware, 2009 (MASH). For the most part, roadside hardware tested and accepted under older guidelines that are no longer applicable has not been excluded in this edition." -- AASHTO website.

Book Synopsis Vehicle Performance as Affected by Pavement Edge Lines and Traffic Signals by : National Research Council (U.S.). Highway Research Board
Download or read book Vehicle Performance as Affected by Pavement Edge Lines and Traffic Signals written by National Research Council (U.S.). Highway Research Board and published by . This book was released on 1958 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paper 1: The paper discusses an investigation of the extent to which motor vehicles remain bunched together when traveling freely down a semi-expressway type of facility after having been formed into platoons by an isolated signalized intersection. Paper 2: Pavement edge strips were placed on a limited mileage of 2-lane rural roads with 24-ft bituminous surfaces in Louisiana. The stripes are reflectorized 4-in. solid white lines placed approximately 12 inches from the edge of the pavement. The study was conducted to determine the effect that a broken or continuous line at various distances from the pavement edge has on the lateral placement of vehicles. Another objective was to find a pattern of broken line giving maximum contrast to the standard center line with minimum costs.
