Book Synopsis Early Mesozoic Tectonics of the Western Great Basin, Nevada by : R. C. Speed
Download or read book Early Mesozoic Tectonics of the Western Great Basin, Nevada written by R. C. Speed and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 1989 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Field Trip Guidebooks Series, Volume 122. This excursion will present an overview of the stratigraphy, structure, and tectonic evolution of the margin of early Mesozoic North America in the Great Basin and of terranes tectonically accreted above and against this margin. Exposures to be visited will show the following features: 1) the Golconda allochthon, a tract of oceanic Paleozoic rocks that was thrust some 100 km across the edge of Triassic North America; 2) shelfal and platformal lower Mesozoic strata that unconformably cover the Golconda allochthon; 3) basinal lower Mesozoic strata that accumulated seaward of the inherited continental edge; 4) Mesozoic and Paleozoic arc volcanics; and 5) Jurassic and Cretaceous foreland structures developed in all the preceding rocks after accretion of terranes had left the early Mesozoic sialic margin well inboard of the active convergent margin. This guide begins with introductions to the neotectonic and Phanerozoic paleotectonic evolutions of the Great Basin. Thereafter, its contents are organized in sequence with field trip stops which are as follows [route map in Figs. 5 and 6]: Day 1. Battle Mt. Golconda allochthon. Day 2. Tobin, Stillwater, and southern Humboldt Ranges. Stratigraphy of platform to basin transition of Triassic cover, Jurassic foreland thrusting; 1915 Pleasant Valley earthquake scarp. Day 3. Sand Springs and Paradise Ranges. Terranes of volcanogenic Triassic and Paleozoic rocks structurally outboard of parautochthonous lower Mesozoic basinal and shelf edge rocks. Days 4 and 5. Mina and Candelaria. North-south traverse across structurally condensed Early Triassic collision zone of exotic Paleozoic arc, Golconda allochthon plus serpentinite melange, Golconda foreland basin strata on Early Triassic North America; these units were covered by Middle and Upper Triassic strata and imbricated with the cover in late Mesozoic foreland thrusting. Day 6. Yerington. Stratigraphy and structure of possibly oldest continental magmatic arc rocks in western Great Basin.

Book Synopsis Paleozoic and Mesozoic tectonic evolution of central and eastern Asia by : Gregory Arlen Davis
Download or read book Paleozoic and Mesozoic tectonic evolution of central and eastern Asia written by Gregory Arlen Davis and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2001 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hendrix (geology, U. of Montana) and Davis (earth sciences, U. of Southern California) present 19 articles detailing ground-based work on the history of assembly and intracontinental deformation of central and eastern Asia. Chapters look at the structural, thermochronologic, and sedimentary records of the history of Paleozoic assembly in Mongolia and central and western China. Further information is presented on Mesozoic deformation in orogenic belts of central and eastern Asia. Asia's sedimentary basins are examined and the intracontinental deformation they record is documented. Many of these contributions, particularly the papers examining Mongolian geology, are the first ground-based articles written in English. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Book Synopsis Stratigraphic and Structural Relationships in the Northern Adobe Range, Elko County, Nevada in the Context of Late Paleozoic and Mesozoic Deformation and Tectonics by : Tristan John Ashcroft

This book was released on 2012 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The northern Adobe Range, Elko County, Nevada, preserves four late Paleozoic deformation events and one Mesozoic deformation event. This significantly revises previous work (Ketner and Ross, 1990) that suggested only Mesozoic deformation is preserved in the northern Adobe Range. The northern Adobe Range exposes an unusually complete succession of Ordovician to Triassic strata and, therefore, is an excellent location to examine the effects of Paleozoic and Mesozoic deformation. The revised timing of deformation in the northern Adobe Range is based on the new interpretation that a number of contacts are unconformities instead of the previous interpretation that those contacts are thrust faults. The four Paleozoic deformation events in the northern Adobe Range are a Mississippian tilting event, a Pennsylvanian southeast verging thrusting event, a late Pennsylvanian folding event, and an Early to Late Permian folding event. The three earlier events are correlative to deformation elsewhere along the Paleozoic Cordilleran margin, most notably to unconformities recognized to the west at Carlin Canyon. The Pennsylvanian southeast verging thrusting event is the major Paleozoic deformation event preserved in the northern Adobe Range and is correlative to late Paleozoic thrusting with similar kinematics elsewhere along the Cordilleran margin. The Early to Late Permian compression was either northeast or southwest directed which is an unusual direction of compression that has not been reported elsewhere. The Mesozoic folding is preserved in both the map scale Adobe syncline and mesoscopic deformation of Triassic strata in the study area. Only one Mesozoic deformation event occurred here in the form of southeast verging folding. Based on regional relationships, this folding occurred either during the Late Jurassic or the Cretaceous. The Late Paleozoic thrusting event in the northern Adobe Range is a component of diachronous thrust faulting along the Cordilleran margin progressing from the Mississippian in the northeast to the Permian in the southwest and may be related to the cause of the Ancestral Rocky Mountain uplifts. Within the constraints of available age control, this thrust faulting is coeval with both the southwestward progression of the Ancestral Rocky Mountain uplifts and the southwestward progression of suturing between Laurentia and Gondwana. These two coeval southwestward progressive compressive regimes, one to the southeast and one to the northeast, may have driven deformation related to the Ancestral Rocky Mountain uplifts in the interior of the Laurentian continent.
