Book excerpt: Stamp seals were used in a similar way to modern signet rings: a negative object used to impress a design into another material, often clay. They are common from around 7000 BC and have remained in use in parts of the world continuously until the present day. This volume focuses on the British Museum's collection of Middle Eastern Late Neolithic and Early Chalcolithic ( 7000-5000 BC) seals used in modern-day Syria, southeast Turkey and northern Iraq. In addition to a catalogue that includes all provenanced examples of these seals in the Museum's collection, the volume presents a new interpretation of these objects by discussing the role of stamp seals in prehistoric society and considers how they were used and why they were made. Whereas previous studies have assessed stamp seals as purely administrative objects, this new publication argues that they should be interpreted in their own, Neolithic, context. The result is a completely fresh approach to Middle Eastern prehistoric studies that complements growing archaeological interest in this period.

Book excerpt: The city of Ur—now modern Tell el-Muqayyar in southern Iraq, also called Ur of the Chaldees in the Bible—was one of the most important Sumerian cities in Mesopotamia during the Early Dynastic Period in the first half of the third millennium BCE. The city is known for its impressive wealth and artistic achievements, evidenced by the richly decorated objects found in the so-called Royal Cemetery, which was excavated by the British Museum and the University of Pennsylvania from 1922 until 1934. Ur was also the cult center of the moon god, and during the twenty-first century BCE, it was the capital of southern Mesopotamia. With contributions from both established and rising Assyriologists from ten countries and edited by three leading scholars of Assyriology, this volume presents thirty-two essays based on papers delivered at the 62nd Rencontre Assyriologique Internationale held in Philadelphia in 2016. Book excerpt: The cylinder seals of the second half of the 1st millennium BC fall into the period dominated by the Achaemenid empire. They are of particular significance in glyptic art and practices, as they bring to a close the 3,000-year history of the Near Eastern cylinder seal. The British Museum's collection of seals of this period totals 92 pieces and is one of the largest outside Iran. The earliest seal was acquired in 1772 from Sir William Hamilton's collection and more than half of the others are attested before 1900. Some, such as the famous seal of Darius, are icons of the period. This volume contains chapters on the history and development of the collection, the historical background, an analytical introduction, a detailed catalogue raisonné, a copiously illustrated analytical index and a contribution by Margaret Sax on the seal materials.
