Book excerpt: Undertaken at the request of the Dept. of Agriculture, the field work for this report was intended to assess the possibilities of obtaining groundwater to supplement surface waters for irrigation in the Okanagan Valley. Included is a history of the late glacial period of the Okanagan Valley when the last of the Pleistocene ice sheet disappeared. Pleistocene studies provide basic data for the evaluation of groundwater resources, furnish information useful in engineering studies involving unconsolidated deposits, and directly aid pedological studies of agricultural and forest soils. The main body of the report deals with six map-areas showing the distribution of late glacial features with a description of each feature and an interpretation of its significance in relation to other features in that area.--Document.

This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gnawed Mountain area includes the Highland Valley Copper mine (porphyry Cu-Mo) which is a major copper producer in Canada. The most areally extensive glacial sediment in the region of the mine is till deposited during the Late Wisconsinan Fraser Glaciation. Glaciers dominantly flowed south to southeastward during this glacial event as indicated by the orientation of numerous drumlins and flutings. During ice retreat, lateral meltwater channels were eroded in the flanks of valleys and the hillsides ofmountains indicating that ice occupied low ground when higher elevations were ice-free. Accumulations of glaciofluvial sand and gravel, too small to be mapped at this scale, can be found in proximity to these meltwater channels. The glaciofluvial drainage was generally to the south during ice retreat with aggradation of glaciofluvial sediments in the Guichon Creek valley. Glacial lake sediments in the Witches Brook valley were deposited in a glacial lake which formed when the eastward drainage was blocked by a mixture of ice and sediments. Mine tailings (anthropogenic deposits) are present near the open-pits and in the valley which extends northwest from the mine (previously occupied by Pukaist Creek). Limited field work was completed in this region in 2011 and 2012. Field station locations are shown on the map.

This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bootjack Mountain region is bounded by the Quesnel and Cariboo river valleys to the north, Beaver Valley to the west and Quesnel Lake to the east. Till, of the Late Wisconsinan Fraser Glaciation, is the dominant surficial material, mapped primarily as blankets but also as streamlined, hummocky and ridged topography. Glaciofluvialsediments, marking glacial retreat, are mapped predominantly as outwash terraces, as well as kame terrace and ice-contact deposits interpreted to reflect ice-stagnation. Glaciolacustrine sediment veneers and blankets are mapped along Beaver Valley. Holocene colluvial and alluvial sediments are mapped in Beaver Valley and the Quesnel and Cariboo river valleys. Colluvium is mapped as blankets, veneers, aprons, landslide and hummocky deposits whereas alluvial deposits include terraces, plains, and fans. Meltwater channels are generally oriented parallel to ice flow (northwest-southeast). Two distinct ice-flow movements have been recorded in this region. An earlier west-southwestward flow (255°-275°) followed by a later, northwestward flow (293°-330°).
