Book Synopsis Fossil and Recent Sponges by : Joachim Reitner
Download or read book Fossil and Recent Sponges written by Joachim Reitner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fossil and Recent Sponges contains articles on taxonomic, phylogenetic and ecological aspects of sponges of both biological and paleontological interest. They focus on three main topics: phylogeny and systematics, biology, and paleoecology of sponges. The reader is offered an overview over the most important aspects of current sponge research: - establishment of a new taxonomy based on mono phyletic groups (phylogenetic systematics) including recent and fossil taxa - new concepts of the biomineralisation of sponge skeletons - palaeoenvironmental analysis of fossil sponge buildups.

Book Synopsis A New Silurian (Llandovery, Telychian) Sponge Assemblage from Gotland, Sweden by : Freek Rhebergen
Download or read book A New Silurian (Llandovery, Telychian) Sponge Assemblage from Gotland, Sweden written by Freek Rhebergen and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-02-20 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A newly discovered, diverse sponge fauna of early Silurian age, is described from Gotland, Sweden. This is the first Silurian sponge assemblage known from Baltica, and the only diverse Llandoverian assemblage known worldwide. The fauna includes 20 genera and 29 species, of which three genera and six species are new. Eighteen species are new to Baltica. The fauna shows strong similarities to later Silurian assemblages in Arctic Canada, but one endemic species comprises ca. 50% of the fauna. The fauna shows that lithistid sponges recovered well from the late Ordovician extinction in some areas, and became widely spread in the early Silurian. In contrast, non-lithistid sponges like, such as hexactinellids, appear to have evolved rapidly during the Late Ordovician – early Silurian interval, and some modern groups probably originated in inshore habitats.
Book Synopsis Systema Porifera by : John N.A. Hooper
Download or read book Systema Porifera written by John N.A. Hooper and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1779 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research whilst compiling this book has uncovered a fauna about twice the size as that previously published in the literature and consequently Systema Porifera revises and stabilizes the systematics of the phylum to accommodate this new knowledge in a contemporary framework. Practical tools (key illustrations, descriptions of character) are provided to facilitate the assignment of approximately 680 extant and 100 fossil genera. Systema Porifera is unique making sponge taxonomy widely available at the practical level of classification (genera, families, order). It is a taxonomic revision of sponges and spongiomorphis (such as sphinctozoans and archaeocyathans) based on re-evaluation of type materials and evidence. It is also a practical guide to sponge identification providing descriptions and illustrations of characters and interpretation of their importance to systematics. Systema Porifera addresses many long standing nomenclatural problems and provides a sound baseline for future debate on sponges and their place in time and space. Systema Porifera describes 3 classes, 7 subclasses, 24 orders, 127 families and 682 valid genera of extant sponges (with over 1600 nominal generic names and an additional 500 invalid names treated). Treatment of the fossil fauna is less comprehensive or critical, although 6 classes, 30 orders, 245 families and 998 fossil genera are mentioned. Keys to all recent and many fossil taxa are provided.
Book Synopsis Middle Silurian Ludlovian and Wenlockian Sponges from Baillie-Hamilton and Cornwallis Islands, Arctic Canada by : J. Keith Rigby
Download or read book Middle Silurian Ludlovian and Wenlockian Sponges from Baillie-Hamilton and Cornwallis Islands, Arctic Canada written by J. Keith Rigby and published by Geological Survey of Canada. This book was released on 1989 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes one of the most diverse Silurian sponge faunas known in North America. The fossils are from the Cape Phillips Formation on Baillie-Hamilton and Cornwallis islands, and are part of the distinct biogeographic realm that stretches north and west of the Transcontinental Arch. The fossils were obtained from both allochthonous and autochthonous beds that represent slope or basin margin environments of the Franklinian Geosyncline. It describes 5 new genera and 19 new species.
Book Synopsis The Late Devonian Mass Extinction by : George R. McGhee
Download or read book The Late Devonian Mass Extinction written by George R. McGhee and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on two decades of research, The Late Devonian Mass Extinction reviews the many theories that have been presented to explain the global mass extinction that struck the earth over 367 million years ago, considering in particular the possibility that the extinction was triggered by multiple impacts of extraterrestrial objects.

Book Synopsis Understanding Late Devonian and Permian-Triassic Biotic and Climatic Events by : Jeff Over
Download or read book Understanding Late Devonian and Permian-Triassic Biotic and Climatic Events written by Jeff Over and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2005-12-02 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Late Devonian and Permian-Triassic intervals are among the most dynamic episodes of Earth history, marked by large secular changes in continental ecosystems, dramatic fluctuations in ocean oxygenation, major phases of biotic turnover, volcanism, bolide impact events, and rapid fluctuations in stable isotope systems and sea level. This volume highlights contributions from a broad range of geological sub-disciplines currently striving to understand these critical intervals of geologically rapid, global-scale changes. * Provides updated, current models for the mid-Late Devonian and Permian-Triassic mass extinction episodes * Highlights several new analytical approaches for developing quantitative datasets * Takes an integrated approach presenting datasets from a broad range of sub-disciplines

Book Synopsis Encyclopedia of Modern Coral Reefs by : David Hopley
Download or read book Encyclopedia of Modern Coral Reefs written by David Hopley and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-11-26 with total page 1226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coral reefs are the largest landforms built by plants and animals. Their study therefore incorporates a wide range of disciplines. This encyclopedia approaches coral reefs from an earth science perspective, concentrating especially on modern reefs. Currently coral reefs are under high stress, most prominently from climate change with changes to water temperature, sea level and ocean acidification particularly damaging. Modern reefs have evolved through the massive environmental changes of the Quaternary with long periods of exposure during glacially lowered sea level periods and short periods of interglacial growth. The entries in this encyclopedia condense the large amount of work carried out since Charles Darwin first attempted to understand reef evolution. Leading authorities from many countries have contributed to the entries covering areas of geology, geography and ecology, providing comprehensive access to the most up-to-date research on the structure, form and processes operating on Quaternary coral reefs.
