Book excerpt: Excerpt from Last Periods of Universal History Prefatory remarks.-the fresh events just added to my Universal History are, though forcibly condensed into small compass, numerous, and full of interest and importance. Like Columbus, I have steered my bark through untraveled seas, having collected my facts mostly from newspapers and periodicals, including annals; but I have journeyed in the meantime in my own and in foreign countries, and have often enjoyed the privilege of conversing with the actors of the historic drama, or those personally acquainted with their deeds. The ability to trace great events to their true causes, cannot exist without previous familiarity with his tory; nor is this alone sufficient. And here it becomes no historian to presume on his own success, but humbly to await the award of his judges. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from World History The scope, character, and purpose of this textbook perhaps require some clarification here. It covers the entire historic field, together with a chapter on prehistoric times; it presents a survey of human progress, rather than a chronological outline of events; it is intended for that large body of students who, for various reasons, do not take more than one year of history in the high school. They ought to gain from such a course, however brief, some conception of social development and some realization Of man's upward march from the Stone Age until the present time. Nothing but general or universal history will give them that conception, that realization. And only a history of the world will enable them to appreciate the contributions made by peoples widely separated in space and time to what is steadily becoming the common civilization of mankind. About two thirds of the book are devoted to the last three centuries. This period furnishes the immediate historical background Of the life of to-day: it is therefore the period ordinarily most interesting and profitable to the student. The chapters dealing with it are reproduced, with some abbrevia tion, from my Modern European History. The other chapters are based on my Early European History, but they contain much that is new, both in the text and also by way of maps and illustrations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tabular Views of Universal History: A Series of Chronological Tables, Presenting, in Parallel Columns, a Record of the More Noteworthy Events in the History of the World From the Earliest Times Down to the Present Day It has been the intention of the editor in the several instances in which events and dates have become a matter of con troversy, to follow the authorities most generally accepted. It may easily, however, be the case that an occasional date/or statement has been retained which some scholarly reader may find ground to question; such a critic can only be referred back to the latest investigators for the authoritative decision that seems to him to be important and that it is not practicable to attempt in a condensed summary of the world's history such as is presented in the present volume. The study of history and the intelligent reading of history should be, as stated, a study of the relations of events to each other made with the view of securing as far as practicable an understanding of the causation of these events and of the influence exercised upon them by historic characters, by the leaders of men. This is the information which the publishers are undertaking to present to the public, on both sides of the Atlantic, in The Handbook of Universal History. Some times, like counter-currents in the ocean, two or more nations have been enga ed in conflict for superiority; sometimes one carried all before it, and stood unrivalled and alone: the tide of empire, indeed, has ebbed and flowed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Library of Universal History and Popular Science, Vol. 25 of 25: Containing a Record of the Human Race From the Earliest Historical Period to the Present Time Being myself naturally rather prone to suffer from low spirits, I have at several of these gatherings taken the Opportunity Of dwelling on the privi leges and blessings we enjoy, and I reprint here the substance Of some of these addresses (omitting what was special to the circumstances Of each case, and freely making any altera tions and additions which have since occurred to me), hoping that the thoughts and quotations in which I have myself found most comfort may perhaps be Of use to others also. It is hardly necessary to say that I have not by any means referred to all the sources of happiness Open to us, some indeed Of the greatest pleasures and blessings being altogether omit ted. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chronological Table of Universal History: Extending From the Earliest Times to the Year 1892; For the Use of Students, Teachers, and Readers It will be seen that the plan adopted in the present work has been to deal separately with the events of different countries. The events in any one year are not arranged all in chronological order, but each state is introduced independently. Several countries are, of course, grouped together in one division whenever the connection of events demands. In the history of the Middle Ages and of modern times down to the American Revolution the first place, as a rule, is accorded to the British Isles. France follows, and next in order come the countries of central Europe and Italy and Spain, after which the remaining states of Europe are introduced. The political history of the whole of the Old World is given before that of the New. From the time of the American Revolution the first place is assigned to the United States, the order otherwise remaining in the main as before. It has been deemed proper to present the history of Europe in the year 1848 in a connected sketch. Events not political are always left to the end. The names in the obituary lines are arranged in chronological order. Chronological Accuracy. A comparison of the dates in this book with those in any ordinary work of reference will reveal a great amount of discrepancy. It is little understood to what an extent encyclopedic publications contradict each other in the matter of dates. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Universal History The bold censures I have passed upon the prejudices and superstitions of mankind; the severity with which I have treated the disgraceful artifices, and ridiculous pretensions of princes, priests, and aristocrats; together with my vindication of the people's rights, and of the free sway of their reasoning faculties cannot but raise many enemies against this work and its author. These reflections, with the importance and sublimity of the work itself, has, at times, made me doubt the propriety of offering my thoughts to the public; but, convinced that my readers will find that I have had the promulgation of truth for my chief object. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrated Universal History: A Clear and Concise History of All Nations, With a Full History of the United States to the Close of the First 100 Years of Our National Independence For convenience, though somewhat arbitrarily, the work is divided into three parts, each containing the record of an important era in the history of the world. Book First contains an historical account of the ancient world, embracing the period from the Creation of Man to the Fall of the Western Roman Empire, A. D. 476. Book Second embraces the history of the Middle Ages, comprising the time from the Fall of the Western Roman Empire to the Discovery of America, inclusive. Book, Third comprises a record of the modern period, describing the epoch from the Discovery of America to the present time. Great historical events have been arranged logically rather than chronologically, and great care has been taken to detail facts in proportion to their relative impor tance. The author has also taken great pains to omit what is irrelevant, and he has selected from the great mass of historical matter those events which have exerted a controlling influence upon the destinies of the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Library of Universal History and Popular Science, Vol. 11 of 25: Containing a Record of the Human Race From the Earliest Historical Period to the Present Time This condition of things had its origin in the efi'orts of the Tudor sovereigns to estab lish a court party in the House of Com mons by a profuse creation of boroughs, most of which were mere villages then at the disposal of the crown, and resulted in the appropriation of these seats by the neighboring land-owners, who bought and sold them as they did their own estates. Even in towns which had a real claim to representation the restriction of municipal privileges ever since the fourteenth century to a small proportion of the inhabitants of such towns, and in many instances the limi tation of the elective franchise to members of the governing corporation, rendered their representation simply nominal.
