Book excerpt: The research effort in this thesis is devoted to develop techniques to accurately and rapidly identify the location, orientation, and magnitude of the defects by using structural health monitoring concepts that use Laser Doppler Vibrometer as a non-contact sensor with multi-point sensing capability. The first research area addresses the formulation and validation of an innovative Damage Measure that is based on the ratios of the strain energy distributions of the damaged and undamaged structure. The innovations include use of a single set of actuator/sensor pair to excite and detect the responses of a structure for low frequency vibrations as well as guided wave propagation studies. A second new capability is the estimation of the Damage Measure without requiring any knowledge of the undamaged baseline structure. This method is made possible because of the development of these new technologies: Spatial Decimation and Wavenumber/Frequency filtering. The third contribution is to develop analytical models for the structural dynamics of damaged structure and seek solutions that use perturbation methods to detect damage in a plate structure. The fourth contribution is the development of a comprehensive damage detection technique over a wide frequency dynamic range. The fifth topic of research involves automation in Structural Health Monitoring based on the comprehensive Damage Measure formulation. Under the control of software the Scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometer is used to acquire the low frequency vibration mode data for a coarse identification of all the suspect regions of damage using a threshold criterion on the Damage Measure. Each suspect region of damage is further investigated using the high frequency elastic wave propagation to clearly identify the location, orientation, and extent of the damage. The computer control of the Laser Doppler Vibrometer and a quantitative assessment of the damage provide the enabling technologies for the automation proof of concept. Finally the developed techniques of damage detection are successfully demonstrated on practical structures such as a turbine blade in the laboratory and an F-15 vertical tail in field maintenance conditions.

Book excerpt: This thesis details the development and validation of a laser Doppler vibrometer-based measurement system that is capable of quantifying not only the normal vibration of a solid body but also the component of vibration that is parallel to the plane containing the surface of interest. LDV manufacturers produce various devices that capture 3D measurements in a beam configuration that can be used to decompose the measured signals into not only the normal velocity of the surface of an object but also two orthogonal in-plane components of the vibration. It was a slightly simplified two-dimensional version of this approach that was chosen for implementation in the Wave Physics Lab using individual components to create a cheaper, more flexible system than those produced by companies such as Polytec. The goal of this system is to facilitate the exploration and discovery of areas and applications where 2D measurement may provide a more complete and precise view of the physics of different phenomena. Upon completion of the system development and validation, a study was done that sought to measure the acoustoelastic effect in an Aluminum plate by measuring how increasing loads alter both the normal and in-plane components of Lamb wave propagation in the plate. The acoustoelastic effect is the effect of stress on wave speed caused by non-linearity in the propagation medium.

Since direct measurements of critical biological activity are often difficult to acquire noninvasively, many biological signals are measured from the surface of the skin. This simplifies the signal acquisition, but complicates post processing tasks. Modeling these signals using the underlying physics may not be accurate due to the inherent complexities of the human body. The appropriate use of such models depends on the application of interest. Models developed in this dissertation are motivated by underlying physiology and physics, and are capable of expressing a wide range of signal variability without explicitly invoking physical quantities. An approach for the processing of biological signals is developed using graphical models. Graphical models describe conditional dependence between random variables on a graph. When the graph is a tree, efficient algorithms exist to compute sum-marginals or max-marginals of the joint distribution. Some of the variables correspond to the measured signal, while others may represent the hidden internal dynamics that generate the observed data. Three levels of hidden dynamics are outlined, which enable models to be constructed that track internal dynamics on differing time scales. Expectation maximization algorithms are used to compute parameter estimates. Experimental results of this approach are presented for a novel method of recording bio-mechanical activity using a Laser Doppler Vibrometer. The LDV measures surface velocity on the basis of the Doppler shift. This device is targeted on the neck overlying the carotid artery, and the proximity of the carotid to the skin results in a strong signal. Vibrations and movements from within the carotid are transmitted to the surface of the skin, where they are sensed by the LDV. Changes in the size of the carotid due to variations in blood pressure are sensed at the skin surface. In addition, breathing activity may be inferred from the LDV signal. Individualized models are evaluated systematically on LDV data sets that were acquired under resting conditions on multiple occasions. Model fit is evaluated both within and across recording sessions. Model parameters are interpreted in terms of the underlying physiology. Pressure wave physics in a series of elastic tubes is presented to explore the underlying physics of blood flow in the carotid. Mechanical movements of the carotid walls are related to the underlying pressure, and therefore the cardiovascular activity of the heart and vasculature. This analysis motivates a model that can be estimated from experimental data. Resulting models are interpreted for the LDV signal. The graphical models are applied to the problem of identity verification using the LDV signal. Identity verification is an important problem in which the claimed identity is either accepted or rejected by an automated system. The system design that is used is based on a loglikelihood ratio test using models that are trained during an enrollment phase. A score is computed and compared to a threshold. Performance is given in the form of False Nonmatch and False Match empirical error rates as a function of the threshold. Confidence intervals are computed that take into account correlations between the system decisions.

Biometrics is the science of using physiological or behavioral characteristics to determine or verify attributes of a person, including identity. Fingerprints, iris scans, face images, and retina scans are examples of measurements of physiological characteristics that have been proposed and are being used as biometrics. Gait and signature are two primarily behavioral characteristics that have been explored for their use as biometrics. More biometric systems are under development as current biometric technologies satisfy those attributes with mixed success. In biometric recognition, two key properties for useful biometrics are their ability to distinguish among individuals and their stability over time. A novel approach of measuring carotid pulse signals via a laser Doppler vibrometer remotely is proposed. Laser Doppler Vibrometry (LDV) is used to sense vibration on the surface of the skin above the carotid artery. This motion is related to arterial wall movements associated with the central blood pressure pulse. The non-contact basis of the LDV method has several potential benefits related to non-intrusiveness. To enhance the technical quality of the laser signal during this developmental effort, a small patch (1 cm2) of reflective tape was affixed to the recording site. The biometric capabilities of Laser Doppler Vibrometry (LDV) signals are evaluated. Several recognition methods are proposed that use the temporal and/or spectral information in the signal to assess biometric performance both on an intra-session basis, and on an inter-session basis involving testing repeated after delays of 1 week to 6 months. A waveform decomposition method that utilizes principal component analysis is used to model the signal in the time domain. Authentication testing for this approach produces an equal-error rate (EER) of 0.5% for intra-session testing. However, performance degrades substantially for inter-session testing, requiring a more robust approach to modeling. Improved performance is obtained using techniques based on time-frequency decomposition, incorporating a method for extracting informative components. Biometric fusion methods including data fusion and information fusion are applied to train models using data from multiple sessions. As currently implemented, this approach yields an inter-session EER of 6.3%. LDV biometric performance under moderate exercise is tested. A protocol is set up to produce changes in heart rate by physical exercise. Spectrogram based approaches are applied with an EER of 3.6% for inter-state tests, indicating that the LDV pulse signal is stable after moderate physical exercise. The performance degrades during exercise, but improves within 30 seconds as the heart rate recovers during the rest period. The results suggest that the variability caused by heart rate fluctuations and respiration changes decreases within a short time.
