Book Synopsis José Lezama Lima's Joyful Vision by : Gustavo Pellón
Download or read book José Lezama Lima's Joyful Vision written by Gustavo Pellón and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-08-27 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cuba’s José Lezama Lima became the most controversial figure in the flowering of the Latin American novel with the 1966 publication of Paradiso. Hailed as a seminal writer of breathtaking originality by Julio Cortázar, Octavio Paz, and Mario Vargas Llosa, Lezama was also attacked by the Castro regime and others for his stylistic obscurity, erotic descriptions, and violation of literary norms. Indeed, his experimental fiction, written on the very boundaries of the novelistic genre, resists classification. José Lezama Lima’s Joyful Vision, a much-needed critical study of Paradiso, Oppiano Licario, and Lezama’s essays, is thus an exploration in reading, one that highlights and preserves the essential and persistent contradictions in Lezama’s theory and practice of literature. Gustavo Pellón focuses his study on Lezama’s search for equilibrium, clarifying such oppositions in Lezama’s writings as the mystical quest for illumination through obscurity, the calculated cultivation of naïveté, the Proust-like fascination with yet ultimate condemnation of homosexuality, and a modernist (even postmodernist) narrative style that conveys a mystical (essentially medieval) worldview. Above all, Pellón shares his wonder at Lezama who, in an age of pessimism, maintained his joyful vision of art and existence.
Download or read book Vision 2020 written by Clifford Madsen and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-10-28 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Housewright Symposium on the Future of Music Education, held at Florida State University in Tallahassee in 1999, assembled 175 music educators, industry representatives, community arts leaders, and students to speculate about what music education might look like in 2020 and the directions the field might take. Participant presentations were published in 2000 as the book Vision 2020, and the current reprint shares the ideas of the likes of Wiley Housewright, Clifford Madsen, Judith Jellison, and other illuminati of music teaching and learning. The contributors to this book asked leading questions about the value of music education, its place in the curriculum, and its possible futures. Many preservice music teachers in the intervening twenty years read chapters like “Why Study Music?” or “How Can All People Continue to Be Involved in Music Education?”—questions whose answers are as relevant today as they were at the end of the last century. As music education moves into a new phase with the current pandemic, the topics considered in this publication are of increasing importance to the discussion. An introduction by two successive presidents of the National Association for Music Education, Kathleen D. Sanz of Florida and Mackie V. Spradley of Texas, place this places this reprint edition in the context of the present day and looks at future directions of the profession.

Book Synopsis Vision and Certitude in the Age of Ockham by : Katherine Tachau
Download or read book Vision and Certitude in the Age of Ockham written by Katherine Tachau and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-07-11 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When William of Ockham lectured on Lombard’s Sentences in 1317-1319, he articulated a new theory of knowledge. Its reception by fourteenth-century scholars was, however, largely negative, for it conflicted with technical accounts of vision and with their interprations of Duns Scotus. This study begins with Roger Bacon, a major source for later scholastics’ efforts to tie a complex of semantic and optical explanations together into an account of concept formation, truth and the acquisition of certitude. After considering the challenges of Peter Olivi and Henry of Ghent, Part I concludes with a discussion of Scotus’s epistemology. Part II explores the alternative theories of Peter Aureol and William of Ockham. Part III traces the impact of Scotus, and then of Aureol, on Oxford thought in the years of Ockham’s early audience, culminating with the views of Adam Wodeham. Part IV concerns Aureol’s intellectual legacy at Paris, the introduction of Wodeham’s thought there, and Autrecourt’s controversies.
Book Synopsis Vision, Technology, and Subjectivity in Mexican Cyberpunk Literature by : Stephen C. Tobin
Download or read book Vision, Technology, and Subjectivity in Mexican Cyberpunk Literature written by Stephen C. Tobin and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-07-06 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vision, Technology and Subjectivity in Mexican Cyberpunk Literature interrogates an array of cyberpunk and post-cyberpunk science fiction novels and short stories from Mexico whose themes engage directly with visual technologies and the subjectivities they help produce – all published during and influenced by the country’s neoliberal era. This book argues that television, computers, and smartphones and the literary narratives that treat them all correspond to separate-yet-overlapping scopic regimes within the country today. Amidst the shifts occurring in the country’s field of vision during this period, the authors of these cyberpunk and post-cyberpunk narratives imagine how these devices contribute to producing specular subjects—or subjects who are constituted in large measure by their use and interaction with visual technologies. In doing so, they repeatedly recur to the posthuman figure of the cyborg in order to articulate these changes; Stephen C. Tobin therefore contends that the literary cyborg becomes a discursive site for working through the problematics of sight in Mexico during the globalized era. In all, these “specular fictions” represent an exceptional tendency within literary expression—especially within the cyberpunk genre—that grapples with themes and issues regarding the nature of vision being increasingly mediated by technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the inarticulate form elements hidden in the unconscious structure of a work of art or—what comes to the same thing — with the unconscious structure of the perception processes by which we actively create or passively enjoy these unconscious form elements. In order to become aware of inarticulate forms we have to adopt a mental attitude not dissimilar to that which the psycho-analyst must adopt when dealing with unconscious material, namely some kind of diffuse attention.
Book Synopsis Dante's Vision and the Circle of Knowledge by : Giuseppe Mazzotta
Download or read book Dante's Vision and the Circle of Knowledge written by Giuseppe Mazzotta and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a masterly synthesis of historical and literary analysis, Giuseppe Mazzotta shows how medieval knowledge systems--the cycle of the liberal arts, ethics, politics, and theology--interacted with poetry and elevated the Divine Comedy to a central position in shaping all other forms of discursive knowledge. To trace the circle of Dante's intellectual concerns, Mazzotta examines the structure and aims of medieval encyclopedias, especially in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries; the medieval classification of knowledge; the battle of the arts; the role of the imagination; the tension between knowledge and vision; and Dante's theological speculations in his constitution of what Mazzotta calls aesthetic, ludic theology. As a poet, Dante puts himself at the center of intellectual debates of his time and radically redefines their configuration. In this book, Mazzotta offers powerful new readings of a poet who stands amid his culture's crisis and fragmentation, one who responds to and counters them in his work. In a critical gesture that enacts Dante's own insight, Mazzotta's practice is also a fresh contribution to the theoretical literary debates of the present. Originally published in 1992. Book Synopsis Echoes of Aquinas in Cusanus's Vision of Man by : Markus Führer
Download or read book Echoes of Aquinas in Cusanus's Vision of Man written by Markus Führer and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2014-02-19 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Echoes of Aquinas in Cusanus’s Vision of Man demonstrates the influence that the philosophical and theological anthropology of Saint Thomas Aquinas had on Nicholas of Cusa’s (Cusanus) view of human nature. Markus Führer demonstrates that Cusanus's view of the place of man in the universe is remarkably similar to the view of Aquinas. Führer thereby challenges the prevailing opinion that Cusanus was a Renaissance philosopher dedicated to the philosophy of man and that he was one of the founders of Renaissance humanism. A close examination of the texts of both Aquinas and Cusanus, when compared to some of the leading Renaissance writers, indicates that it is not entirely true that Cusanus was Renaissance in his analysis of the human condition. Because Cusanus’s copies of some of the works of Aquinas are still intact and his marginal comments in these manuscripts indicate not only that he read Aquinas carefully, but also actually reacted to texts in Aquinas, it is possible to conduct a study of Cusanus’s use of Aquinas based directly on the text of Aquinas. Führer also explores similarities by studying the formulae that both writers used in expressing their respective positions. This book, with its unique examination of the impact of Aquinas’s thought upon Cusanus, will appeal to students and scholars of late medieval theology and philosophy.
