The valley of the Rio Mira in Ecuador was such a place. Jesuit priests brought slaves - including Lola Laben’s ancestors - to farm sugarcane almost four hundred years ago. Slavery was abolished, but the work continued. Agrarian reform came, Lola’s parents became land owners, and the work continued. Lola was born in a mud house identical to the ones her slave ancestors had been born in for generations. She helped her parents farm a little farther downriver in the same manner that her ancestors had farmed. She explored her tropical paradise and wondered about faraway places and listened to the news of the outside world: the world beyond her valley and the city where the train came to and from three times a week. Fate determined that the outside world would find her, and she now resides in the most thoroughly modern and up-to-date nation on the planet. Guess what? Intihuatana es una misteriosa escultura irregular, localizada a un extremo del Templo de las Tres Ventanas, un obervatorio Inca de la Ciudad de Macchupicchu en Perú, considerada una de las maravillas del mundo. Cuenta la Leyenda Inca, que Intihuatana era utilizado para amarrar al Sol, en un esfuerzo por evitar que se fuera, o quizá sólo para alargar el día y estirar las horas de luz. El Sol era considerado el Padre y Dios de los Incas e Intihuatana era una roca labrada ubicada en casi todas las cudades incas. Con la llegada de los españoles al Perú todas las Intihuatanas fueron destruidas permaneciendo en el tiempo solo la que existe hoy en Macchupicchu. María Belén (Maribé) escucha últimamente indefi nibles sonidos en el sótano de su casa donde por años nadie ha descendido. Su prima Mercedes, de sensibilidad especial viene para acompañarla a bajar al sótano y descubrir la procedencia de ellos. Caminando entre piezas antiguas encuentran un antiguo baúl cerrado. Después de algunos intentos logran abrirlo. Entre extrañas curiosidades encuentran unas escrituras. Quién y de qué trata todo ello? Descubren que la escritora se llama Tess. La reconocen como su antepasada. La curiosidad las distrae del objetivo por el que están en el lugar. Se entretienen leyendo rápidamente, resumiendo páginas. Tess tiene muchas cosas expresadas en papel. Casi toda una vida. Se emocionan compartiendo sus letras y vivencias . Pero no están solas. Alguien más que se manifi esta de modo incomprensible. Poco a poco se dan cuenta que son prisioneras de la realidad de si mismas y desearán escapar y vivir una nueva vida. Lo lograrán?

Attention is focused on the texts themselves and their literary implications as testimonies of the multicultural and multilingual society of al-Andalus. Since languages and alphabets of the three major religions have been used, these texts are studies historically, prosodically, thematically and stylistically and are related to the three literary traditions. One of the novelties of this study is the fact that it has been based upon the most updated edition and interpretations of the texts introducing emendations in over a third of its contents and making obsolete most of the hundreds of previous articles and books on the topic. Another novelty is the fact that stylistic features have been studied according to the Arabic model, casting new light on them. The survey of thematic relationships and the analysis of code-switching phenomena add weight to the conclusions of this research.
