Il constitue en quelque sorte la suite de recherches menées dans les années 1990 sur le même sujet (voir notamment, chez le même éditeur, Les fondements de la discipline archivistique, 1994, et Les fonctions de l’archivistique contemporaine, 1999). Les auteurs y analysent en effet les principaux changements survenus en archivistique depuis un peu plus de 20 ans, en grande partie sous l’influence des technologies de l’information et de la communication ainsi que des conclusions d’ambitieux projets de recherche internationaux. Avec la révolution numérique, qui a bouleversé les principes, les fonctions, les lois, l’enseignement et la recherche, le bilan sur l’archivistique que propose cet ouvrage s’avère plus que nécessaire.
