Book Synopsis Soil Organic Matter and Biological Activity by : D. Vaughan
Download or read book Soil Organic Matter and Biological Activity written by D. Vaughan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has long been recognized that soil organic matter is the key to soil fertility. As a nutrient store it gradually provides essential elements which the soil cannot retain for long in inorganic form. It buffers growing plants against sudden changes in their chemical environment and preserves moisture in times of drought. It keeps the soil in a friable, easily penetrated physical condition, well-aerated and free draining, providing young seedlings with an excellent medium for growth. But it has another property, the nature and extent of which have been the subject of argu ment and controversy ever since scientists began to study the soil, and that is its ability to affect growth directly, other than by providing nutrient elements. Any one wishing to learn about these effects has been faced with a daunting mass of literature, some confusing, often contradictory, and spread through a multitude of journals. Individual aspects have been covered from time to time in reviews but there has obviously been a need for a modern authoritative text book dealing with the many facets of this subject, so the publication of this volume is timely. The editors and authors are all specialists in their fields, fully familiar with the com plex nature of soil organic matter and with the particular difficulties arising in any study of its properties. Where controversies exist they have presented all sides of the argument and have highlighted areas where further work is badly needed.

Download or read book Meat written by D J A Cole and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meat provides an introductory review of the meat-eating habit in man and covers the production, preservation, composition, eating quality, human nutrition, and assessment of the future role of meat. Meat continues to be a major food commodity. Despite the high cost of production of meat animals and their lower efficiency of protein synthesis compared with that of plants and micro-organisms, meat is likely to be important in the human diet for as long as can be foreseen in the future. This book intends to emphasize the fact that the sequence of events, from the conception of meat animals to their incorporation in the human diet, is continuous. The properties of the commodity when eaten are influenced, in the nature and degree of their expression, by all the earlier components in this chain of circumstances. This text is a useful reference for students conducting research within the fields of agriculture science, biochemistry, and nutrition.

Download or read book Planthoppers written by R. F. Denno and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 806 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Planthoppers include some of the most devastating pests of major agricultural crops throughout the world. One species, the rice brown planthopper, is among the most economically important pests in Asia. In past decades, government policies encouraged the control of rice planthoppers with synthetic pesticides, a tactic which promoted insecticide resistance and often led to the pesticide-induced resurgence of pest populations. To deter planthopper outbreaks, a more ecologically sound management strategy is being implemented, one based on a thorough investigation of population dynamics, natural enemies, and the genetics of host plant and insecticide adaptation. In the natural habitats of North America and Europe, scientists have also used planthoppers as model organisms to test ecological and evolutionary theory. The consequence of these diverse studies is an extremely scattered literature on planthoppers that has never been synthesized from an ecological perspective. This volume summarizes what is known about planthopper ecology and biological control. It takes a theoretical approach yet is deeply concerned with the application of theory to the practical problems of pest management.
Book Synopsis A Handbook of Soil Terminology, Correlation and Classification by : Pavel Krasilnikov
Download or read book A Handbook of Soil Terminology, Correlation and Classification written by Pavel Krasilnikov and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-12-01 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil classification and terminology are fundamental issues for the clear understanding and communication of the subject. However, while there are many national soil classification systems, these do not directly correlate with each other. This leads to confusion and great difficulty in undertaking comparative scientific research that draws on more than one system and in making sense of international scientific papers using a system that is unfamiliar to the reader. This book aims to clarify this position by describing and comparing different systems and evaluating them in the context of the World Reference Base (WRB) for Soil Resources. The latter was set up to resolve these problems by creating an international 'umbrella' system for soil correlation. All soil scientists should then classify soils using the WRB as well as their national systems. The book is a definitive and essential reference work for all students studying soils as part of life, earth or environmental sciences, as well as professional soil scientists.
