Book excerpt: This curriculum adaptation provides a methodology that enables the classroom teacher to recognize the needs of the otitis media-affected child in the classroom. It discusses areas of concern related to otitis media; suggests activities that can enhance these children's language skills; and shows ways to enhance the learning environment by considering the acoustics, using small classroom settings, or using sound field amplification in large classroom settings. The curriculum presents objectives in four areas: audition, cognition, language skills, and socialization. For each objective area, possible problems and techniques for curriculum adaptation are provided, and materials and references are listed. Sample problems in the area of audition include difficulty attending in the presence of background noise, difficulty blending sounds into words, and saying "huh" or "what" frequently. Sample problems in the area of cognition include difficulty with name recall and need for extra processing time. Problems in language skills include being very literal and using a rehearsed phrase to mean many things. Socialization problems include, among others, being distractible, withdrawing from classroom activity, and being unaware of the needs of others. Appendices contain a behavioral checklist, an ear health history information sheet, and a list of equipment sources. A bibliography of approximately 250 references is included. (JDD)

Updates include: the incorporation of new original research, systemic reviews, and evidence reports to existing chapters. New chapter topics include: evidence-based medicine, professional evidence reports, molecular and translational research, complementary and alternative medicine, bacteriologic efficacy of antimicrobials, vaccine prevention, international management perspectives, meta-analysis of speech and language sequelae, suppurative complications, host susceptibility to sequelae, and judicious use of systemic and topical antimicrobials. FEATURES: *Maturation of evidence-based medicine as a foundation for clinical care is reflected throughout the text. *Extensive evidence tables summarize study characteristics and quantitative outcomes for clinically relevant endpoints *Internationally distinguished contributors selected based on both their clinical expertise and their ability to write for an evidence-based text

Book excerpt: Language is of central importance in children's education and development, so providing help for the child suspected of having language difficulties is clearly of vital concern. Providing such help, or advising a teacher or parent on how best to proceed is, however, far from straightforward. Early Language Development draws together in a single volume the results of the very latest findings on language development and shows practitioners how best they can make use of them. In particular, special emphasis is given to the two most important practical questions for the practitioner: How can I find out exactly what the problem is? and What can I do about it?

Book excerpt: Glue Ear is a common condition among young children but until recently its long-term effects on learning and achievement weren't fully understood. Lindsay's research has demonstrated that there is a significant link between Glue Ear, speech and language and dyslexia. This book will help teachers to understand the implications of temporary hearing loss, and demonstrate how to be proactive as well as reactive in tackling the issues. This book will also be helpful to health professionals who may be aware of the medical implications of Glue Ear but not the educational reverberations. A separate section for parents enables teachers/health visitors/GPs to access information to copy and give out to families.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since attempts were made to describe and explain normal language development, references to exceptional circumstances have been made. Variations in the conditions under which language is acquired can be regarded as natural experiments, which would not be feasible or ethical under normal circumstances. This can throw light on such questions as: *What language input is necessary for the child to learn language? *What is the relationship between cognition and language? *How independent are different components of language function? *Are there critical periods for language development? *Can we specify necessary and sufficient conditions for language impairment? This book covers a range of exceptional circumstances including: extreme deprivation, twinship, visual and auditory impairments, autism and focal brain damage? Written in a jargon-free style, and including a glossary of linguistic and medical terminology, the book assumes little specialist knowledge. This text is suitable for both students and practitioners in the fields of psycholinguistics, developmental and educational psychology, speech pathology, paediatrics and special education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We now know much more about the process of language development in all children, and also much more about variations in the process due to multi-cultural and multi-linguistic backgrounds, and developmental anomalies. The book describes both the remarkable changes in language knowledge and use that occur from infancy through high school, and also the differences in the process due to variations in experience. What has been found to be good educational practice during each of these stages is discussed, emphasising that among other things, good practice involves awareness of, and planning for, diversity in the abilities of children.
