Book Synopsis Little Novels of Sicily by : Giovanni Verga
Download or read book Little Novels of Sicily written by Giovanni Verga and published by Steerforth. This book was released on 2011-03-01 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in a single volume in 1883, the stories collected in Little Novels of Sicily are drawn from the Sicily of Giovanni Verga's childhood, reported at the time to be the poorest place in Europe. Verga's style is swift, sure, and implacable; he plunges into his stories almost in midbreath, and tells them with a stark economy of words. There's something dark and tightly coiled at the heart of each story, an ironic, bitter resolution that is belied by the deceptive simplicity of Verga's prose, and Verga strikes just when the reader's not expecting it. Translator D. H. Lawrence surely found echoes of his own upbringing in Verga's sketches of Sicilian life: the class struggle between property owners and tenants, the relationship between men and the land, and the unsentimental, sometimes startlingly lyric evocation of the landscape. Just as Lawrence veers between loving and despising the industrial North and its people, so too Verga shifts between affection for and ironic detachment from the superstitious, uneducated, downtrodden working poor of Sicily. If Verga reserves pity for anyone or anything, it is the children and the animals, but he doesn't spare them. In his experience, it is the innocents who suffer first and last and always.

Book Synopsis The House by the Medlar-Tree by : Giovanni Verga
Download or read book The House by the Medlar-Tree written by Giovanni Verga and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-06-02 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The House by the Medlar Tree is a realist work concerning Sicilian life and the dangers of economic and social turmoil. The story focuses on the hardworking and happy Malavoglia family that borrows money from a local lender against unreceived cargo, they wish to resell. When it is lost at sea, the family attempts everything in their power to repay the debt. Several setbacks follow as the family faces trouble from every quarter. Whatever dreams the family formulated over three generations, they witness them destroyed and struggle to make ends meet. This story of the family of fishermen is set in Aci Trezza, a small Sicilian village near Catania, where life revolves around constant gossip about honor, money, and marriage. The novel maintains a choral element and portrays characters that are united by the same culture but divided by ancient feuds. The tone is kept light through the irony with which the author depicts the characters and their peculiarities. The story is a remarkable portrayal of the life of an unlucky family in a Sicilian village and is full of sorrow, loss, warmth, and redemption.

Book Synopsis The Classic Short Story, 1870-1925 by : Florence Goyet
Download or read book The Classic Short Story, 1870-1925 written by Florence Goyet and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2014-01-13 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to construct a nuanced narrative or complex character in the constrained form of the short story has sometimes been seen as the ultimate test of an author's creativity. Yet during the time when the short story was at its most popular - the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries - even the greatest writers followed strict generic conventions that were far from subtle. This expanded and updated translation of Florence Goyet's influential La Nouvelle, 1870-1925: Description d'un genre à son apogée (Paris, 1993) is the only study to focus exclusively on this classic period across different continents. Ranging through French, English, Italian, Russian and Japanese writing - particularly the stories of Guy de Maupassant, Henry James, Giovanni Verga, Anton Chekhov and Akutagawa Ry?nosuke - Goyet shows that these authors were able to create brilliant and successful short stories using the very simple 'tools of brevity' of that period. In this challenging and far-reaching study, Goyet looks at classic short stories in the context in which they were read at the time: cheap newspapers and higher-end periodicals. She demonstrates that, despite the apparent intention of these stories to question bourgeois ideals, they mostly affirmed the prejudices of their readers. In doing so, her book forces us to re-think our preconceptions about this 'forgotten' genre.

Book Synopsis Approaches to Teaching the Works of Primo Levi by : Nicholas Patruno
Download or read book Approaches to Teaching the Works of Primo Levi written by Nicholas Patruno and published by Modern Language Association. This book was released on 2014-11-01 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Primo Levi, Holocaust survivor and renowned memoirist, is one of the most widely read writers of post-World War II Italy. His works are characterized by the lean, dispassionate eloquence with which he approaches his experience of incarceration in Auschwitz. His memoirs--as well as his poetry and fiction and his many interviews--are often taught in several fields, including Jewish studies and Holocaust studies, comparative literature, and Italian language and literature, and can enrich the study of history, psychology, and philosophy. The first part of this volume provides instructors with an overview of the available editions, anthologies, and translations of Levi's work and identifies other useful classroom aids, such as films, music, and online resources. In the second part, contributors describe different approaches to teaching Levi's work. Some, in presenting Survival in Auschwitz, The Reawakening, and The Drowned and the Saved, look at the place of style in Holocaust testimony and the reliability of memory in autobiography. Others focus on questions of translation, complicated by the untranslatable in the language and experiences of the concentration camps, or on how Levi incorporates his background as a chemist into his writing, most clearly in The Periodic Table.

Download or read book I Malavoglia written by Giovanni Verga and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I Malavoglia is one of the great landmarks of Italian Literature. It is so rich in character, emotion and texture that it lives forever in the imagination of all who read it. What Verga called in his preface a 'sincere and dispassionate study of society' is an epic struggle against poverty and the elements by the fishermen of Aci Trezza, told in an expressive language based on their own dialect. "Giovanni Verga's novel of 1881 I Malavoglia presented its translator Judith Landry with formidable problems of dialect and peasant speech which she has solved so unobtrusively that one wonders why this moving and tragic tale is so little known in England."
Book Synopsis Memory and Mastery by : Roberta S. Kremer
Download or read book Memory and Mastery written by Roberta S. Kremer and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book carefully examines the work of Primo Levi, one of the premier survivor-writers of the Holocaust and one of the outstanding Italian writers of the twentieth century. Artists, writers, and educators have all turned to Levi's writing as a source of inspiration and wisdom in coping with the tragedy of the Holocaust. Until recently, however, there have been few book-length works in English on Levi. This collection of essays from an international group of writers aims to bring greater critical attention to Levi's work by exploring all aspects of his oeuvre, including his science-fiction writings and his poetry, as well as his fictional and nonfictional writings about the Holocaust. Interdisciplinary in nature, this collection includes literary, psychoanalytic, linguistic, and historical approaches to Levi's work.
