Book excerpt: ABSTRACT:Language ability has assumed priority in current studies of the economic success of immigrants and minority language speakers. Past studies have shown that language ability, a key human and cultural capital trait, tends to be positively associated with earnings. Building on this past research, the goal of this study is to examine how the effect of English language proficiency on earnings of Hispanic men in Florida varies by labor market context. Specifically, it aims to compare the difference in the effect of English language proficiency on earnings in areas densely populated by Spanish speakers to the effect of language on earnings in areas dominated by English speakers. I predict that English language proficiency will have a greater impact on earnings in areas where Spanish is not widely spoken. In areas where there are large enclaves of Spanish-speakers, English will likely be a less important determinant of earnings. The effect of bilingualism on earnings is also analyzed in this manner. To test my hypotheses, my study consists of two parts: the first based on statistical analysis of US census data and the second based on qualitative interviews. Findings show that English language ability is indeed an important determinant of earnings both in areas with a high proportion of Spanish-speakers and in areas with a low proportion of Spanish-speakers. However, results from the statistical analysis show that English language ability has a greater impact on earnings in areas with a high proportion of Spanish-speakers. While English language proficiency yields greater earnings in these areas, Spanish language proficiency also has a positive effect on earnings. Fully bilingual Hispanics earn more than their English only counterparts in these areas.

Book excerpt: This paper analyzes employment and earnings differentials between Spanish speakers and English speakers in the United States, using data from the 1970, 1980, and 1990 U.S. censuses. The results show that Spanish speakers, both men and women, do not perform as well in the labor market as English speakers. The results also reveal that Spanish-English earnings and unemployment differentials increased slightly in the 1970s, most likely because of rapid growth in the number of Spanish speakers. By contrast, these differentials increased sharply in the 1980s, also a period of rapidly increasing supply. However, there is no evidence that the widening of differentials in the 1980s reflects an increase in the labor market rewards to English language proficiency. Rather, they appear to be the result of Spanish speakers having relatively little of those labor market characteristics, most notably education, whose market value increased dramatically during the 1980s.

Book excerpt: Inside the experiences of immigrants from Latin America and the Caribbean Latino Orlando portrays the experiences of first- and second-generation immigrants who have come to the Orlando metropolitan area from Puerto Rico, Cuba, Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia, and other Latin American countries. While much research on immigration focuses on urban destinations, Simone Delerme delves into a middle- and upper-class suburban context, highlighting the profound demographic and cultural transformation of an overlooked immigrant hub. Drawing on interviews, observations, fieldwork, census data, and traditional and new media, Delerme reveals the important role of real estate developers in attracting Puerto Ricans—some of the first Spanish-speaking immigrants in the region—to Central Florida in the 1970s. She traces how language became a way of racializing and segregating Latino communities, leading to the growth of suburban ethnic enclaves. She documents not only the tensions between Latinos and non-Latinos, but also the class-based distinctions that cause dissent within the Latino population.
