Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the United States of America, French is of importance in only two areas, Louisiana and New England, the latter often being referred to as the Québec d'en bas for its high number of French-Canadian immigrants. Among the six states that constitute New England, Massachusetts is the one that attracted most of them, Québécois as well as Acadiens. Despite the high number of citizens of French-Canadian origin and the proximity to Canada, French has been losing ground as a langue du foyer in all of New England but especially in the southern part. This sociolinguistic study concentrates on the process of language decay among the French-Canadian population of Massachusetts. Based on a corpus consisting of 87qualitative interviews and a quantitative questionnaire survey of 392 questionnaires in 7 areas (covering the centers of French-Canadian immigration throughout Massachusetts),this study approaches the topic in a new, broader angle by encompassing the following aspects: ananalysis of U.S. Census data on ancestry and language use, an overview of the history of French-Canadian presence in Massachusetts, various specificities of the varieties of Canadian French spoken there, as well as ananalysis of the extralinguistic factors, such as the heterogeneity of the French-speaking population, and the intralinguistic consequences, such as unskilled code-switching,of language decay.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rewritten versions of contributions to an international conference held at the University of Antwerp in May 1992. Starting point for the conference was the vagueness of the very terms 'modernism' and 'modernity'. In the first section a group of comparatists address the theoretical and terminological problems of modernism. Practical readings of modernist writers; discussions of different modernist movements; and, the work of critics who have contributed to debates about modernism make up the second section. The third section looks at the problem of modernism from an interartistic and interdisciplinary perspective.

Book excerpt: Since the early 1970s, the Inuit of Arctic Quebec have struggled to survive economically and culturally in a rapidly changing northern environment. The promotion and maintenance of Inuktitut, their native language, through language policy and Inuit control over institutions, have played a major role in this struggle. Language, Politics, and Social Interaction in an Inuit Community is a study of indigenous language maintenance in an Arctic Quebec community where four languages - Inuktitut, Cree, French, and English - are spoken. It examines the role that dominant and minority languages play in the social life of this community, linking historical analysis with an ethnographic study of face-to-face interaction and attitudes towards learning and speaking second and third languages in everyday life.

Book excerpt: French Phrases Vol.1: English & French THIS EDITION: French Phrases seeks to bridge the gap between knowing individual words and knowing how to create or understand sentences. Sentences are phrases or a combination of phrases, and phrases are a combination of words. The simplest phrases are the simplest ways of combining words. Exposure to a wide variety of phrases, especially in increasing complexity, provides the basis for obtaining a solid grasp of a new language. The reason being, phrases can be combined with other phrases to create endless possibilities in language. French Phrases contains a wide variety of phrases, but it also demonstrates how phrases can increase in complexity – through the inclusion of individual words or other phrases. The reader can choose between four formats: Section 1: English to French Section 2: French to English Section 3: English Section 4: French The text can be used to obtain a fundamental grasp of French grammar. An understanding of the rules that underpin the way words combine into phrases, or phrases combine into sentences, allows the language learner to expand their capacity exponentially simply by increasing vocabulary. With this in mind, the text includes an introductory section summarising the important aspects of French grammar. The dual-language text has been arranged for quick and easy cross-referencing. The text can be used on its own. However, the content is ideal for reinforcing and expanding on a basic grasp of the language. With an increasingly robust grasp of the language, the language learner can easily and fruitfully move on to more advanced bilingual text — like in 2Language Books editions —, or suitable French only text: a simple novel, a French news website, etc. Many basic language books offer some form of audio support. Internet services — primarily news based radio stations — offer podcasts. Audio from television is an additional resource, and can be formatted for use on various digital platforms. However, if audio is an important component of your interest in languages, electronic devices that support quality text-to-speech (TTS) will likely be appealing. With a library card, TTS technology (in a device that supports the relevant content), and the above mentioned resources (as digital content), an entire language learning system is available for not much more than a cup of coffee! There is no substantial financial outlay to get you started. Furthermore, there are no additional ongoing fees (and updates), and there are no expiry dates on ‘premium’ content and resources. Book excerpt: Witty, entertaining, and informative, this book on so-called 'false friends' will be of immediate use to anyone using the French language and needing to understand French society and culture. The individual entries have been carefully designed to carry the basic linguistic information required and then develop into a wider consideration of the social and cultural context within which the specific words and phrases are used in current French. As this title is supposed to be used in conjunction with and not instead of a dictionary, it also offers a brief list of recommended reading ranging from standard dictionaries to introductory works on French society and institutions.
