Cette nouvelle dimension doit être prise en compte pendant la formation une enquête auprès des ingénieurs INSA a permis de mieux préciser leurs besoins en langues. Ensuite, une analyse plus approfondie des situations identifiées nécessitant l'emploi de la langue anglaise révèle les compétences et les qualités requises pour l'ingénieur-communicateur. A partir d'une étude comparative des formations en anglais dans les écoles d'ingénieurs de l'académie de Toulouse, mettant en évidence les contraintes, motivations et démarches pédagogiques mises en pratique, des recommandations sont formulées pour mieux cibler cette formation. Elle doit s'articuler autour de trois axes : le savoir ou maîtrise linguistique, les savoir-faire professionnels et le savoir-être facilitant la communication internationale. Des exemples d'activités appropriées sont suggérées afin d'illustrer cette préparation aux trois axes interdépendantes.

Nous indiquons tout d'abord quelle approche théorique sous-tend notre travail, en quoi la communauté des engineers anglo-saxons spécialistes du Génie Civil se distingue de celle des ingénieurs français et la méthode que nous avons suivie pour constituer notre corpus. Puis nous présentons une analyse des spécificités des communautés des engineers britanniques et américaines, en décrivant leur évolution, de leur émergence à nos jours. Nous proposons enfin une typologie des éléments constitutifs de notre corpus, qui s'organise autour de deux axes : le discours disciplinaire et le discours professionnel ; pour chacun de ces deux types de discours nous faisons une étude des caractéristiques sémiotiques, textuelles, rhétoriques et linguistiques.
