This book was released on 2015-01-26 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [Winner of the 2016 Bronze medal in Architecture, Independent Publisher Book Awards] This book comprises a series of 22 case studies by renowned experts and new scholars in the field of architecture competition research. In 2015, it constitutes the most comprehensive survey of the dynamics behind the definition, organization, judging, archiving and publishing of architectural, landscape and urban design competitions in the world. These richly documented contributions revolve around a few questions that can be summarized in a two-fold critical interrogation: How can design competitions - these historical democratic devices, both praised and dreaded by designers - be considered laboratories for the production of environmental design quality, and, ultimately, for the renewing of culture and knowledge? Includes 340 illustrations, bibliographical references and index of over 200 cited competitions. Keywords: Architecture / International competitions / Architectural judgment / Design thinking / Digital archiving (databases) / Architectural publications / Architectural experimentation / Landscape architecture / Urban studies

Book Synopsis Constructed Ground by : Charles Waldheim
Download or read book Constructed Ground written by Charles Waldheim and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the shadow of the Art Institute of Chicago, a new garden is growing. Constructed Ground documents the international design competition for the new Millennium Garden that is being constructed just north of the Art Institute in Grant Park. Lavishly illustrated, the book presents drawings, models, photographs, and written descriptions of the ten entries, two finalists, and the commission-winning design. The winning project, selected by a jury of eminent design professionals, is the Shoulder Garden, designed by landscape architect Kathryn Gustafson, Dutch plant expert Piet Oudolf, and theatrical designer Robert Israel. The garden plays on the formal grid structure of Grant Park and the strong forms of Chicago's machines and architecture. A combination of sculpted hedges, constructed pavilions, colorful interior gardens, and enclosed groves, the Shoulder Garden creates a canopied refuge and meeting place in the midst of the city. The Millennium Park will include not only the Shoulder Garden but also Frank Gehry's Music Pavilion and Renzo Piano's addition to the Art Institute. A contemporary design on a historic site, the Shoulder Garden brings Chicago's lakefront boldly into the new century with an innovative landscape unlike anything built in North America to date.
Book Synopsis Design by Competition by : Jack L. Nasar
Download or read book Design by Competition written by Jack L. Nasar and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-02-28 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What meanings do buildings and places convey to the people who use and visit them? Too often, design competitions and signature architecture result in costly eyesores that do not work. How can sponsors and clients get more meaningful results? In answer to these questions, Dr Nasar, supported by riveting studies of competitions and Peter Eisenman's competition-winning design for the Wexner Center at the Ohio State University, suggests the use of pre-jury evaluation (PJE). He shows the potential value of this approach as well as visual quality programming for many kinds of environmental design for which the client wants to convey certain desirable meanings. The studies, from those specific to the Wexner Center to those covering the scope of history, point to an alternative method for shaping the visual form of buildings, places and cities.
