Book Synopsis The Huguenots in England by : Bernard Cottret
Download or read book The Huguenots in England written by Bernard Cottret and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a much-revised version of Professor Cottret's acclaimed study of the Huguenot communities in England, first published in French by Aubier in 1985. The Huguenots in England presents a detailed, sympathetic assessment of one of the great migrations of early modern Europe, examining the social origins, aspirations and eventual destiny of the refugees, and their responses to their new-found home, a Protestant terre d'exil. Bernard Cottret shows how for the poor weavers, carders and craftsmen who constituted the majority of the exiles the experience of religious persecution was at once personal calamity, disruptive of home and family, and heaven-sent economic opportunity, which many were quick to exploit. The individual testimonies contained in consistory registers contain a wealth of personal narrative, reflection and reaction, enabling Professor Cottret to build a fully rounded picture of the Huguenot experience in early modern England. In an extended afterword Professor Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie considers the Huguenot phenomenon in the wider context of the contrasting British and French attitudes to religious minorities in the early modern period.

Book Synopsis The Religious Culture of the Huguenots, 1660-1750 by : Dr Anne Dunan-Page
Download or read book The Religious Culture of the Huguenots, 1660-1750 written by Dr Anne Dunan-Page and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-06-28 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent years have witnessed a revival of interest in the history of the Huguenots, and new research has increased our understanding of their role in shaping the early-modern world. Yet while much has been written about the Huguenots during the sixteenth-century wars of religion, much less is known about their history in the following centuries. The ten essays in this collection provide the first broad overview of Huguenot religious culture from the Restoration of Charles II to the outbreak of the French Revolution. Dealing primarily with the experiences of Huguenots in England and Ireland, the volume explores issues of conformity and nonconformity, the perceptions of 'refuge', and Huguenot attitudes towards education, social reform and religious tolerance. Taken together they offer the most comprehensive and up-to-date survey of Huguenot religious identity in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
Book Synopsis Ireland's Huguenots and Their Refuge, 1662-1745 by : Raymond Hylton
Download or read book Ireland's Huguenots and Their Refuge, 1662-1745 written by Raymond Hylton and published by . This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the nearly 200,000 Huguenots whose consciences compelled them to leave France during the 17th and 18th centuries, some 10,000 chose to settle in that most unlikely of refuges-Ireland. The story of why and how these most ardent of Protestant believers found themselves in this most fervently Catholic of islands is one of history's great paradoxes. This book explores this question and attempts to reveal precisely who these Huguenots were, what they contributed to and received from their adopted land, and why Huguenot ancestry is so respected and prized even among devout Irish Catholics. The true chronicle of Ireland's Huguenots is, in opposition to the narrow misrepresentations of the past, one of extraordinary richness and variety, as befits an ethnic group whose influence permeated every nook of Irish life and society.
Book Synopsis The Berlin Refuge 1680-1780 by : Sandra Pott
Download or read book The Berlin Refuge 1680-1780 written by Sandra Pott and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2003-07-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with the intellectual Huguenot Refuge (ca 1680–1780), discussing its philosophical, theological, historical, and literary aspects in European context. It uses Berlin as its regional point of departure: In the French-Protestant community of Berlin, the erudites rapidly established networks which pursued a very wide range of interest, communicating with every Protestant scholar who might contribute to the dissemination of Enlightened thought. The first part of the book, therefore, introduces the biggest and most complex centre of the Refuge in Germany. Whereas the second and third part examine different fields of knowledge, the fourth focusses on the topic of dissemination. All contributions present new material–be it on 'Huguenot' hermeneutics, journalism, history, or on the relationship between Berlin and the United Provinces. Contributors include: Lutz Danneberg, Joris van Eijnatten, Herbert Jaumann, John Christian Laursen, Fabrizio Lomonaco, Martin Mulsow, Fiammetta Palladini, Sandra Pott, and Annett Volmer.
