This book was released on 1987 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improvements in rice growing technologies during the last two decades have resulted in a number of countries, especially in the humid tropical regions of Asia, nearing self-sufficiency in rice production. Consequently, policies are shifting in these countries toward minimizing the under-utilization of land by increasing the cropping intensity of irrigated areas, particularly by growing non-rice crops during the dry season. These workshop papers discuss the advantages of and constraints to crop diversification in different country situations throughout Asia.

This book was released on 2021-07-08 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agriculture is one of the most important economic sectors of Sri Lanka and is key to the livelihoodof its population. As agriculture is one of the sectors most vulnerable to climate change, a thorough understanding of its impact is critical for formulating informed and effective adaptation strategies. Climate change challenges agriculture in many ways and affects – directly or indirectly – the economy, productivity, employment and food security. Assessing the impacts of climate change on crops is fundamental for elaborating evidence-based adaptation policies and strategies, guaranteeing sustainable pathways towards intensification and adopting climate-smart agricultural practices. This report presents insights about future climate change impacts on six crops (rice, maize, green gram, big onion, chilli and potato), selected according to a wide range of criteria: contribution to gross domestic product, relevance to food security and role as staple food, importance for farming systems, social impact, effect on employment, role as animal feed, consumer preferences, contribution to the export market, climatic vulnerability/resilience, market prices and price fluctuations, and farming input requirements.

Book Synopsis Impacts of climate change on water resources and agriculture in Sri Lanka: a review and preliminary vulnerability mapping. by : Eriyagama, N.
Download or read book Impacts of climate change on water resources and agriculture in Sri Lanka: a review and preliminary vulnerability mapping. written by Eriyagama, N. and published by IWMI. This book was released on 2010 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is ample evidence to suggest that Sri Lanka’s climate has already changed. However, the bigger question of national importance is what Sri Lanka’s climate will look like in 50 or 100 years and how prepared the country is to face such changes. This report reviews the status of climate change (CC) research/activities in Sri Lanka in terms of observed and projected climatic changes, their impacts on water resources and agriculture, CC mitigation and adaptation, and research needs. The study also developed a pilot level CC Vulnerability Index, which was subsequently mapped at district level. The maps indicate that typical farming districts such as Nuwara Eliya, Badulla, Moneragala, Ratnapura and Anuradhapura are the most vulnerable to CC due to their heavy reliance on primary agriculture.

Book Synopsis Challenges and Strategies of Dryland Agriculture by : S.C. Rao
Download or read book Challenges and Strategies of Dryland Agriculture written by S.C. Rao and published by Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world has made remarkable progress in maintaining adequate food supplies during the past quarter century by introducing yield-increasing technologies such as better genetics, crop protection products, and more efficient use of fertilizers and irrigations. Far more people depend on irrigation in the modern world than during the times of ancient Sumeria. The spread of irrigation has been the key factor in increasing global crop yields. But future scarcity present the single biggest threat to future food production. The shift of water from agriculture to the growing cities and industry almost certainly will impact global food production. This means that dryland agriculture will be increasingly important in meeting food requirement for the growing population. Advaces in plant genetics and agronomic conservation technologies, when considered in concert, continue to provide the greatest opportunities to achieve sustainability and profitability in dryland agriculture and will continue to be the focus of the ARS research program. The ARS is please to join the crop Science Society of America and international center for Agriculture Research in Dry Areas (ICARDA) in sponsoring a symposium “Challenges and strategies for Dryland Agriculture” at the Trisocieties Annual Meeting in November 2002 at Indianapolis, IN. This special publication contains an impressive series of paper by international group of experts on dryland agricultural production, conservation, and policy. The principles, philosophies, and technologies presented in this publication have the potential to contribute to improve food security and livelihoods for the people in dryland regions of the world.

Book Synopsis Dry zone of Sri Lanka – Climate-smart intensification of upland and lowland crop production systems by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book Dry zone of Sri Lanka – Climate-smart intensification of upland and lowland crop production systems written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2022-02-18 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide explores the climate-smart intensification of upland and lowland crop production systems in the dry-zone of Sri Lanka and provides technical guidance to achieve the productive objectives of selected strategic crops (as deemed relevant by the Government of Sri Lanka). The first edition focuses on maize and groundnut upland production systems and on rice lowland production. It provides a quick reference for information on crop production and soil management, including crop varieties, nutritional requirements and field equipment. As climate change will result in wider and more severe occurrences of plant pests, the guide relies on integrated pest management practices adapted to climate change. Optimizing the production of these crops calls for the diversification of crop systems using intercrops and cover crops. Additionally, sustainable mechanization is regarded as an essential agricultural production input to optimize labour and land productivity for the sustainable and profitable development of the agriculture sector. Therefore, the guide describes the innovative equipment needed for the sustainable optimization of crop production. To ensure coherent guidance and advice on sustainable farming practices, inputs and technologies, the guide has been developed in cooperation with all stakeholders working in the agriculture sector of Sri Lanka.
