Book excerpt: Excerpt from Land Resources of Fluvanna County, Virginia Fluvanna County contains a large acreage of relatively poor but improv able soils. More than acres, or three-fifths of its total land area, would be suitable for cr0ps. Nearly h0,000 acres, or an additional one-fifth, could provide permanent pasture. Rainfall is generally ample and the frost-free season is long enough for most of the farm crops commonly produced in Virginia. Comparatively heavy applications of fertilizer and lime and adoption of other measures to improve productivity would be needed, especially on the Nason and Tatum soils. More than half the area of the county is situated on land that ranges from level to undulating. An additional fourth is on rolling land. Thus, modern farm machinery could be used to good advantage on Nason, Tatum, and similarly situated soils. These soils would also be fairly easy to conserve. Past cultivation has resulted in moderate to severe erosion on only about 10 percent of the acreage in the county. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Land of Sunshine It is my belief that the present development of mining, cattle raising and agriculture is but a small beginning of material progress in these lines, and that the greatest reward for the thrift and energy of your citizens is held by future years to be bountifully bestowed. There can be no doubt that Yuma County will stand among the first counties of the southwest in agriculture, mining and cattle-raising; and to-day throughout Arizona I have observed that the resources of your county are pointed to with pride by the people of the whole Territory. The soil of the Colorado and other valleys of Yuma County is famed throughout the country as possessing elements that insure production in all branches of agriculture and horticulture beyond the most sanguine hopes of the husbandman. In my judgment the Colorado River Valley is one of the richest in the world. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Encyclopedia of the Underground Railroad by : J. Blaine Hudson
Download or read book Encyclopedia of the Underground Railroad written by J. Blaine Hudson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-01-09 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fugitive slaves were reported in the American colonies as early as the 1640s, and escapes escalated with the growth of slavery over the next 200 years. As the number of fugitives rose, the Southern states pressed for harsher legislation to prevent escapes. The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 criminalized any assistance, active or passive, to a runaway slave--yet it only encouraged the behavior it sought to prevent. Friends of the fugitive, whose previous assistance to runaways had been somewhat haphazard, increased their efforts at organization. By the onset of the Civil War in 1861, the Underground Railroad included members, defined stops, set escape routes and a code language. From the abolitionist movement to the Zionville Baptist Missionary Church, this encyclopedia focuses on the people, ideas, events and places associated with the interrelated histories of fugitive slaves, the African American struggle for equality and the American antislavery movement. Information is drawn from primary sources such as public records, document collections, slave autobiographies and antebellum newspapers.

Book Synopsis Subfloor Pits and the Archaeology of Slavery in Colonial Virginia by : Patricia Samford
Download or read book Subfloor Pits and the Archaeology of Slavery in Colonial Virginia written by Patricia Samford and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2007-12-16 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the daily life and culture of enslaved Africans and their descendants. Enslaved Africans and their descendants comprised a significant portion of colonial Virginia populations, with most living on rural slave quarters adjacent to the agricultural fields in which they labored. Archaeological excavations into these home sites have provided unique windows into the daily lifeways and culture of these early inhabitants. subfloor pits be-neath the houses. The most common explanations of the functions of these pits are as storage places for personal belongings or root vegetables, and some contextual and ethnohistoric data suggest they may have served as West African-style shrines. Through analysis of 103 subfloor pits dating from the 17th through mid-19th centuries, Samford reveals how data on shape, location, surface area, and depth, as well as contextual analysis of artifact assemblages, can show how subfloor pits functioned for the enslaved. Archaeology reveals the material circumstances of slaves' lives, which in turn opens the door to illuminating other aspects of life: spirituality, symbolic meanings assigned to material goods, social life, individual and group agency, and acts of resistance and accommodation. about how West African, possibly Igbo, cultural traditions were maintained and transformed in the Virginia Chesapeake.
