Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales and Legends From the Land of the Tzar: Collection of Russian Stories IN presenting to the English Public this little volume of Russian stories, I give the result of some years' experience in Russia, where I was born, and where I spent my childhood. Some of these tales were dictated in the original Russian at school, others were related to me by my nurse and other servants of my father's household, while some are translations which I have made from various collections of Russian stories current among the people. Russian humour is peculiar, and it is not always easy to know whether Ivan is laughing at or will: you. In this respect he resembles Pat, whose affected simplicity is in nine cases out of ten a mere cloak for unfathom able shrewdness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Land of the Nihilist, Russia: Its People, Its Palaces, Its Politics, a Narrative of Travel, in the Czar's Dominions The Russian Railways - The Sleeping Car and its Porter. - Where Amber Comes From. Travel has its fashions like everything else, and the last season or two everybody has been going to the North Cape and the Land of the Midnight Sun, leaving Switzerland and the German baths to those who have not been to Europe before or are under the doctor's orders. Last year a few of the North Capers spread over into Russia - they were so near that they couldn't help it; but until then the visitors to the Czar's dominions had been so few that Herr Bae deker, the faithful friend of the travelling public, had not considered it worth his while to issue a Russian guide-book, although he has covered nearly every other country on the globe. Those who intend to make the journey a part of a general European tour, should save Russia till the last, and go straight home from there. After one has seen the gilded palaces of the Czars and the treasures of the Kremlin, every other place but Paris will seem very tame to him, and he will lose much of his pleasure. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Russia Russia in Europe, however, with the exception Of Poland and Finland, is a country with one religion and one language: that is, the czar and his government recog nize and admit no other. That is the cause Of the perse cution Of the Jews, four fifths of whom dwell in the Southwest Of Russia in an area covering square miles, which is sometimes mentioned as the jewish terri tory. Every succeeding czar has tried to make all his subjects think and act in the manner prescribed by him. The process is known as Russianizing. And goes on incessantly in its different stages. Immediately after the conquest of a country, its people are assured that their religion, institutions, and language, shall be respected: the only difference is that the native Officials are displaced by Russians. This continues until Russian rule is firmly established, and no one dreams of resisting the czar. Then the Russian language displaces the native tongue, and if disturbances occur, the military is called in to inflict a terrible punishment. The loss of the native language carries with it that Of old institutions, and when the people have submitted to their fate, it is the turn of their religion. The Russian is in no hurry; he has a conviction that time has no changes in store for his empire, hence he bides his time, and is likely to succeed in his purpose. This process is now carried on in Central Asia where Russian power has found its greatest expansion in modern times. It is but fair to admit that Russian absorption there has been highly beneficial because robber tribes were reduced to law and order. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rescuing the Czar: Two Authentic Diaries Arranged and Translated In simple justice, therefore, Rescuing the Czar is offered in extenuation of this doubtful charge against the entire Russian race. For nothing is better calculated tosanctify a martyrdom and make a race abhorred than a belief in its injustice. Nothing is more potent to dissolve a race and scatter its suspected members from the altar of their fathers than the fable of their unrepentant hostility to the cry of Mercy from the sacrificial Ikon. Nothing so quickly exposes their abandoned fields to the tramp of hostile feet and the subjugation of their soil. Ambitious rivalry has no better ally than unexplained suspicion.
