Book excerpt: Lancashire Mining Disasters chronicles the effects, death and grief of the local mining communities in Lancashire, through colliery accidents and explosions from the early 1830's through to 1910. It also recalls the great bravery of other miners, often from other pits in the recue attempts, who with no thought of their own safety went below ground to try and their fellow comrades. In doing so, they knew full well that they were risking their own lives, probably facing death. Such was the comradeship in coal mining communities. In no other industry would men grapple at rock and roof falls with bare hands, wade through flooded smoking underground galleries, or face further explosions and deadly suffocating gases in order to try and save their fellow colleagues. And while all this was ongoing, the pit banks filled with the old men, the grieving womenfolk and children, waiting for news of a loved one - a brother, a son, a husband from deep below in a silent hell. As each cage was raised to the pit bank, the crowd lunged forward hoping, perhaps beyond hope, that their loved one was safe. Little wonder there were no carols sung at Christmastide 1910, at Westhoughton and Atherton in South Lancashire for here, a few days before Christmas an explosion followed by a searing hot fiery blast tore through the workings of the Hulton Colliery Company's Pretoria Pit - and in doing so in just a few seconds took away the lives of over three hundred man and boys. This still holds the unwelcome record of the greatest single colliery explosion in English coalming history. It was coal the fulled the steam engines at mills, factories and foundriers which was to make Britain the greatest industrial nation in the world - but what a terrible price the miners paid in putting the 'Great' in Britain. This was the 'True Price of Coal'.

Book excerpt: In the period that we now call the Industrial Revolution mining disasters wrecked the lives of thousands of South Yorkshire families and devastated entire communities. The Husker pit flooding of 1838 in which 26 young girls and boys were killed shocked Victorian society and and was a significant factor in the 1842 Report on Employment of Women and Children in Mines; but earlier, long forgotten disasters are also explored. The Barnsley area was particularly hard-hit during the middle decades of the century with major mining accidents, usually great explosions of firedamp occurring, for example, at Lundhill Colliery (189 men and boys killed); Oaks (361 fatalities, Britain’s worst pit disaster) and Swaithe Main (143 dead). Scenes of grief, mourning and remarkable heroism provided spectacular copy for Victorian newspapers and magazines such as The Illustrated London News, focusing on the very uncertain and dangerous life of the miner. Despite the importance and widespread occurrence of South Yorkshire mining disasters, which also included dreadful winding accidents and gas emissions, their story has never been told in a single volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part One includes an overview of early disasters, multiple fatalities, from 1710. Part Two, 1806-1841 concerns disasters, under the theme of 'Pit Children'.Part Three, 1844-1888, covers a variety of accidents including explosions and floodings and is called 'Fire, Air and Water'. The final section, Part Four, covers modern disasters, from 1910-1951. The day-to-day life of a miner was fraught with danger, especially when pits were in private hands. Despite government inspection and regulation accidents occurred and they devastated local families and communities. The tragedies included great acts of bravery by volunteer and official rescue teams and they attracted widespread press and media coverage. The great disasters include Hartley (204 deaths), Wallsend (102 fatalities) and Whitehaven (104). The author has taken great care to chronicle each event and compile lists of the dead, including their dependents. The book should be of great value to anyone interested in coal mining, social and family history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is now over half a century since the last coalmining disaster to affect the lives and families of people living and working on what became known as the Great Northern Coalfield. This was the first area of Britain where mining developed on a large scale but at tremendous human cost. Mining was always a dangerous occupation, especially during the nineteenth century and in the years before nationalization in 1947. Safety was often secondary to profit. It was the disasters emanating from explosions of gas that caused the greatest loss of life, decimating local communities. In tight-knit mining settlements virtually every household might be affected by injury or loss of life, leaving widows and children with little or no means of support. At Haswell in 1844 95 men and boys perished; 164 died at Seaham in 1880 and 168 at West Stanley in 1909. This volume provides us with an account of these and all the other pit disasters in County Durham from the 1700s to the 1950s

Book excerpt: In the 1920s there were over a million coalminers working in over 3000 collieries across Great Britain, and the industry was one of the most important and powerful in British history. It dominated the lives of generations of individuals, their families and communities, and its legacy is still with us today _ many of us have a coalmining ancestor. ??Yet family historians often have problems in researching their mining forebears. Locating the relevant records, finding the sites of the pits, and understanding the work involved and its historical background can be perplexing. That is why Brian Elliott's concise, authoritative and practical handbook will be so useful, for it guides researchers through these obstacles and opens up the broad range of sources they can go to in order to get a vivid insight into the lives and experiences of coalminers in the past. ??His overview of the coalmining history _ and the case studies and research tips he provides _ will make his book rewarding reading for anyone looking for a general introduction to this major aspect of Britain's industrial heritage. His directory of regional and national sources and his commentary on them will make this guide an essential tool for family historians searching for an ancestor who worked in coalmining underground, on the pit top or just lived in a mining community.??As featured in Who Do You Think You Are? Magazine and the Barnsley Chronicle.

Book excerpt: Women have long been recognised as the backbone of coalmining communities, supporting their men. Less well known is the role which they played as the industry developed, working underground or at the pit head. The year 2012 is the 170th anniversary of the publication of the Report of the Second Childrens Employment Commission. The report caused public outrage in May 1842, revealing that halfdressed women worked underground alongside naked men. Three months later, to protect them from moral corruption, females were banned from working underground. The Commissions report has been neglected as a historical source with the same few quotations widely used to illustrate the same headline points. And yet, across the country, around 350 women and girls described their lives and work. Together, this report and the 1841 census, produce a detailed and surprising picture of a female miner at work, at home and in her community. After 1842 females were still allowed to work above ground. Following a painful transition in the mid-1840s when some former female miners suffered severe hardship women forged a new role at pit heads in Lancashire and Scotland, and then fought to retain it against opposition from many men. This book examines the social, economic and political factors affecting nineteenth-century female coalminers, drawing out the largely untapped evidence within contemporary sources and challenging long-standing myths. It contains what may be the first identified photograph of a female miner who gave evidence in 1842 and reveals the future lives of some of those who gave evidence to the Royal Commission.

Excerpt: ... parts of the workings, and that they had found groupes of men in the dry parts, all dead. Pumps were being made ready in the meantime to remove the water, partially at least, from the third vein workings so that the bodies could be recovered. During the succeeding few hours, however, it was noticed that the fire from the south and east sides of the main shaft, was slowly encroaching on the shaft itself. Holes were cut in the shaft lining as high as 30 feet from the bottom, and streams of water thrown in behind the shaft lining; but the steam and smoke continued to issue from the openings cut and also from the sides of the shaft, in increasing quantities; to offset this a board stopping was built around the south and east sides of the shaft, and as close thereto, as the working of the cages would permit, and a stopping closed tight, near the bottom of the airshaft. The object of this was to deaden, or partially subdue, the fire thought to be burning between those points; this, however, was not entirely successful as the smoke from behind the shaft lining, which formerly passed to the east and around to the upcast or airshaft, was now carried to the west side of the main shaft, and the rescuers there practically driven from the mine. A strong smell of coal smoke was noted indicating that the coal pillars were on fire, and as the gases given off by burning coal were known to be dangerous, great caution became necessary. Sometime shortly after midnight on the morning of Thursday, November 25, a consultation was held, at which, the President of the State Mining Board, chief of the fire department; expert helmet men from Champaign, the Illinois mine inspectors and representatives of the St. Paul Coal Company were present. The situation was...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pretoria Pit Disaster This work charts the events of the Lancashire Pretoria Pit disaster in December 1910. It reflects on the devastation it left to many local communities whose main source of employment was coal. The main sources analysed are the Home Office Report on the disaster and the Report of the Inquest. The findings are presented in a format that will supplement existing material on the event. The book will also provide a reference source both for local historians and the general reader. Dr David Holding studied history at Manchester University before entering the teaching profession in the 1970s. He taught in both state and independent sectors. During this time, he continued historical research culminating in both a Master's degree and a Doctorate. Having previously studied law, David gained a Master of Law degree in Medical Law, which enabled him to transfer to teaching legal courses at university. Since retiring, David has concentrated his research and writing on various aspects of local history, legal trials, forensic science and medico-legal topics. Why This Title? "The title of the DVD was 'Black Christmas' but for the book, I've changed it to 'Bleak Christmas'. Bleak is better because it is usually a happy time... but it wasn't. You had coffins coming left right and centre-right over Christmas... so it was a bleak Christmas. And butchers were giving away food it was so bad. How do you celebrate where there are 344 men and boys killed?" The Author's Thoughts "There are some people who believe that disasters and other tragedies are too emotive and personal to be the subject of debate, scrutiny and analysis. And, as such, they are best consigned to history. I find it very difficult to share this belief. I firmly believe that it is only by revisiting past events that one is able to fully understand the lessons of history and move forward with confidence. We owe it to future generations to preserve the legacy that history offers us and to bear testimony to those who have gone before. It is to the memory of those men and youths who lost their lives in the Pretoria disaster that this film is dedicated." (David Holding, speaking as Historical Advisor in a Steve Looker/Reel Visions film.) How The Author's Research Began "My involvement with this particular event evolved from research I carried out into several past and more recent disasters and the government response to these as a legal project. Living within the area covered by the Wigan Coalfield, I was fortunate to have the benefit of many former miners and colliery managers who provided me with valuable information. In particular, I spoke at length to a former electrician who actually worked at the Pretoria Pit until its closure in 1934. Whilst there are numerous books, articles and press reports covering this subject, 'Bleak Christmas' provides an alternative approach to the topic. Having literally ploughed through the entire Inquest and Home Office Reports of the disaster, this encouraged me to produce this book in a format which whilst accurately reflecting the findings in these two substantial reports, it is also presented in a format that captures the event in a sequential manner. The reader is taken on a journey through the various stages of the event to capture the enormity of the disaster. The work culminates with an overview of the devastating social and economic input the disaster had on the local communities involved. My overall aim in this work has been to provide readers with a readable yet balanced appraisal of the disaster, with sufficient evidence for them to arrive at their own conclusions regarding the disaster. My work does not diminish or undermine the views held by residents of the communities involved, who have to live with the memory of this devastating tragedy."
