Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lancashire Heeler is a small breed of dog that originated in Lancashire, in England. The breed is believed to be a descendant of the Welsh Corgi, due to the fact that the Welsh Corgi was used to drive livestock from Whales to the north western regions of England. In the Ormskirk area, a type of black and tan terrier, known as the 'Manchester Terrier, ' was introduced. It is believed that the Lancashire Heeler breed was created by mixing the Welsh Corgi and the Manchester Terrier. The Lancashire Heeler breed is known to be at least 150 years old. The Lancashire Heeler has traditionally been used as a general purpose farm dog and is capable of both exterminating small vermin, such as rats, and herding cattle. The Lancashire Heeler breed was recognized as being a vulnerable native breed by the English Kennel Club in 2006, which means that there are under 300 registrations of Lancashire Heelers on a yearly basis. The Lancashire Heeler has been known to compete in dog agility trials, obedience trials, showmanship competitions, flyball and herding events. The breed has a short and harsh top coat and a short and smooth undercoat that keeps it warm and dry in any weather. The temperament of dogs is normally affected by the following factors: individual personality, heredity, training and socialization. It is therefore important to make sure that you meet the puppy's mother before purchasing a Lancashire Heeler. It is also important to make sure to thoroughly socialize your Lancashire Heeler with strangers, children and other animals during its puppyhood. Generally speaking, the Lancashire Heeler is known to be an alert, friendly, energetic and intelligent breed. The Lancashire Heeler is also known to be incredibly affectionate and playful when it is around its direct family unit. Despite its small size, the Lancashire Heeler is a relatively strong breed that enjoys physical exertion. It is important to note that as a working breed, the Lancashire Heeler has a high amount of energy which needs to be expended. If the Lancashire Heeler has a buildup of energy it is likely to develop destructive behaviors due to boredom or hyperactivity. Before purchasing any pet it is important to understand that as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your pet. It is important to try and learn as much as you can about the animal you are considering to keep as a pet to make sure that your lifestyle, household and financial status are suited to provide your pet with the best possible care. This guide has been designed to provide you with both precise and concise information about a Lancashire Heeler's basic needs to help you provide your pet with the best quality care practices. This guide will give an in-depth explanation on training your Lancashire Heeler, raising your Lancashire Heeler from a puppy, grooming, health care and everything in between! "The Lancashire Heeler: A Complete and Comprehensive Owners Guide to: Buying, Owning, Health, Grooming, Training, Obedience, Understanding and Caring for Your Lancashire Heeler," by Michael Stonewood is the perfect purchase or gift for a first time Lancashire Heeler owner. This guide includes sections on caring for a puppy, breeding, health care, training, the basic cost of owning a Lancashire Heeler and much more. This book is the second edition - the first edition was published by 'Dog Care Professionals.'

Here’s the thing: Picking the right dog isn’t just about those adorable puppy eyes (though let’s be honest, they totally help). It’s about finding a breed whose temperament, exercise needs, and grooming habits won’t drive you up the wall—or force you into daily battles with a vacuum cleaner. With Woof-A-Pedia by your side, you’ll have all the info you need to make a decision that’s smart, well-thought-out, and, let’s be real, life-changing. Because there’s nothing quite like finding that furry soulmate who just gets you. What’s Inside? Oh, Just About Everything You Need! The Ultimate Doggo Profiles: Ever wondered what it's like to live with a Labrador Retriever? Or maybe you’ve been curious about a breed like the Sloughi (yes, it’s a thing). From the super popular, like Golden Retrievers and French Bulldogs, to the more unique breeds you’ve probably never even heard of, this guide covers over 250+ dogs. Temperament & Personality Deets: Want a loyal sidekick who’ll stick by your side through thick and thin? Or maybe a playful goofball who’ll keep the kids entertained? You’ll get the lowdown on which breeds are perfect for families, single folks, or seniors, and which are known for being smart, social, or independent. Lifestyle Matchmaker (Because, Let’s Be Real, Dogs Have Preferences Too): You’ve got a routine, and you need a dog that fits into it—not one that turns your life upside down. If you’re a city dweller, the last thing you need is a dog that demands a marathon run at 6 a.m. Health & Grooming 101: Some dogs are pretty chill when it comes to grooming, while others? Well, let’s just say they might as well be furry divas needing constant touch-ups. We’ll break down each breed’s health quirks and grooming needs so you’ll know whether you’re signing up for a low-maintenance pal or a full-on glam squad situation. Training Tips for First-Time (and Seasoned) Dog Owners: Ever seen a dog strut down the street, leash in hand, acting like they own the neighborhood? Don’t be that person. This guide will show you the basics—from crate training to mastering leash manners—so you can set your pup up for success from day one. Think of it as dog parenting but without the diapers. Ready to Meet Your New Best Friend? What are you waiting for? Stop dreaming and start doing! Book excerpt: From animal welfare campaigner Vanessa Holburn and with a foreword by dog lover and presenter of 'A Place in the Sun' Danni Menzies, this book has everything you need to know to help you pick the perfect pooch for your home and lifestyle. How To Pick a Puppy is the essential handbook to finding a 'furever' dog and ensuring that you have many happy and healthy years together. It contains practical advice on how to research the types and breeds of dog available. It considers the pros and cons of puppies, senior, pedigree and rescue dogs, and explains why one might suit an individual more than another. The book equips the reader with all the right questions they need to ask before they choose a dog and shows them how to find a responsible breeder or rescue centre. It teaches how to avoid the pitfalls of getting the wrong dog from the wrong place, and shows you how to spot and avoid a puppy farmer. It also explains the legal responsibilities of dog ownership and covers the range of hobbies and activities owners and dogs can enjoy together. At each stage of the book, Vanessa's advice is complemented by comment from canine experts such as trainers, behaviourists, breeders and those involved in rescue. Happy dog owners and foster carers also add their experience. In the final section the book guides you through the settling in period, discussing early training, socialisation and vet care, so your first month together can be as smooth as possible.

Book excerpt: Cesar Millan—nationally recognized dog expert—helps you see the world through the eyes of your dog so you can finally eliminate problem behaviors. From his appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show to his roster of celebrity clients to his reality television series, Cesar Millan is America’s most sought-after dog-behavior expert. But Cesar is not a trainer in the traditional sense—his expertise lies in his unique ability to comprehend dog psychology. Tracing his own amazing journey from a clay-walled farm in Mexico to the celebrity palaces of Los Angeles, Cesar recounts how he learned what makes dogs tick. In Cesar’s Way, he shares this wisdom, laying the groundwork for you to have stronger, more satisfying relationships with your canine companions. Cesar’s formula for a contented and balanced dog seems impossibly simple: exercise, discipline, and affection, in that order. Taking readers through the basics of dog psychology and behavior, Cesar shares the inside details of some of his most fascinating cases, using them to illustrate how common behavior issues develop and, more important, how they can be corrected. You'll learn: • What your dog really needs may not be what you’re giving him • Why a dog’s natural pack instincts are the key to your happy relationship • How to relate to your dog on a canine level • There are no “problem breeds,” just problem owners • How to choose a dog who’s right for you and your family • The difference between discipline and punishment • And much more! Filled with fascinating anecdotes about Cesar’s longtime clients, and including forewords by the president of the International Association of Canine Professionals and Jada Pinkett Smith, this is the only book you’ll need to forge a stronger, more rewarding connection with your four-legged companion.

Book excerpt: INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER An incredible, revolutionary true story and surprisingly simple guide to teaching your dog to talk from speech-language pathologist Christina Hunger, who has taught her dog, Stella, to communicate using simple paw-sized buttons associated with different words. When speech-language pathologist Christina Hunger first came home with her puppy, Stella, it didn’t take long for her to start drawing connections between her job and her new pet. During the day, she worked with toddlers with significant delays in language development and used Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices to help them communicate. At night, she wondered: If dogs can understand words we say to them, shouldn’t they be able to say words to us? Can dogs use AAC to communicate with humans? Christina decided to put her theory to the test with Stella and started using a paw-sized button programmed with her voice to say the word “outside” when clicked, whenever she took Stella out of the house. A few years later, Stella now has a bank of more than thirty word buttons, and uses them daily either individually or together to create near-complete sentences. How Stella Learned to Talk is part memoir and part how-to guide. It chronicles the journey Christina and Stella have taken together, from the day they met, to the day Stella “spoke” her first word, and the other breakthroughs they’ve had since. It also reveals the techniques Christina used to teach Stella, broken down into simple stages and actionable steps any dog owner can use to start communicating with their pets. Filled with conversations that Stella and Christina have had, as well as the attention to developmental detail that only a speech-language pathologist could know, How Stella Learned to Talk will be the indispensable dog book for the new decade.
