Book Synopsis Harmonic Analysis on Semi-Simple Lie Groups I by : Garth Warner
Download or read book Harmonic Analysis on Semi-Simple Lie Groups I written by Garth Warner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The representation theory of locally compact groups has been vig orously developed in the past twenty-five years or so; of the various branches of this theory, one of the most attractive (and formidable) is the representation theory of semi-simple Lie groups which, to a great extent, is the creation of a single man: Harish-Chandra. The chief objective of the present volume and its immediate successor is to provide a reasonably self-contained introduction to Harish-Chandra's theory. Granting cer tain basic prerequisites (cf. infra), we have made an effort to give full details and complete proofs of the theorems on which the theory rests. The structure of this volume and its successor is as follows. Each book is divided into chapters; each chapter is divided into sections; each section into numbers. We then use the decimal system of reference; for example, 1. 3. 2 refers to the second number in the third section of the first chapter. Theorems, Propositions, Lemmas, and Corollaries are listed consecutively throughout any given number. Numbers which are set in fine print may be omitted at a first reading. There are a variety of Exam ples scattered throughout the text; the reader, if he is so inclined, can view them as exercises ad libitum. The Appendices to the text collect certain ancillary results which will be used on and off in the systematic exposi tion; a reference of the form A2.

Book Synopsis Abstract Harmonic Analysis by : Edwin Hewitt
Download or read book Abstract Harmonic Analysis written by Edwin Hewitt and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-19 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we accepted the kind invitation of Prof. Dr. F.K. SCHMIDT to write a monograph on abstract harmonie analysis for the Grundlehren der Mathematischen Wissenschaften series, we intended to write aH that we could find out about the subject in a text of about 600 printed pages. We intended that our book should be accessible to beginners, and we hoped to make it useful to specialists as weH. These aims proved to be mutuaHy inconsistent. Hence the present volume comprises only half of the projected work. It gives all of the structure of topologie al groups needed for harmonie analysis as it is known to us; it treats integration on locaHy compact groups in detail; it contains an introduction to the theory of group representations. In the second volume we will treat harmonie analysis on compact groups and locally compact Abelian groups, in considerable detail. The book is based on courses given by E. HEWlTT at the University of Washington and the University of Uppsala, although naturally the material of these courses has been enormously expanded to meet the needs of a formal monograph. Like the other treatments of harmonie analysis that have appeared since 1940, the book is a lineal descendant of A. WEIL'S fundamental treatise (WEIL r 4J) 1. The debt of all workers in the field to WEIL'S work is weH known and enormous.
Book Synopsis Harmonic Analysis of Probability Measures on Hypergroups by : Walter R. Bloom
Download or read book Harmonic Analysis of Probability Measures on Hypergroups written by Walter R. Bloom and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-04-20 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The series is devoted to the publication of monographs and high-level textbooks in mathematics, mathematical methods and their applications. Apart from covering important areas of current interest, a major aim is to make topics of an interdisciplinary nature accessible to the non-specialist. The works in this series are addressed to advanced students and researchers in mathematics and theoretical physics. In addition, it can serve as a guide for lectures and seminars on a graduate level. The series de Gruyter Studies in Mathematics was founded ca. 30 years ago by the late Professor Heinz Bauer and Professor Peter Gabriel with the aim to establish a series of monographs and textbooks of high standard, written by scholars with an international reputation presenting current fields of research in pure and applied mathematics. While the editorial board of the Studies has changed with the years, the aspirations of the Studies are unchanged. In times of rapid growth of mathematical knowledge carefully written monographs and textbooks written by experts are needed more than ever, not least to pave the way for the next generation of mathematicians. In this sense the editorial board and the publisher of the Studies are devoted to continue the Studies as a service to the mathematical community. Please submit any book proposals to Niels Jacob.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This series of books collects a diverse array of work that provides the reader with theoretical and applied information on data analysis methods, models, and techniques, along with appropriate applications. Volume 1 begins with an introductory chapter by Gilbert Saporta, a leading expert in the field, who summarizes the developments in data analysis over the last 50 years. The book is then divided into three parts: Part 1 presents clustering and regression cases; Part 2 examines grouping and decomposition, GARCH and threshold models, structural equations, and SME modeling; and Part 3 presents symbolic data analysis, time series and multiple choice models, modeling in demography, and data mining.

Book excerpt: In recent years there has been a tremendous growth in psychology as a field of study and in the number of students of clinical psychology in particular. The latter is partly due to the proliferation of professional schools of psychology that are devoted to practitioner-oriented degrees, rather than the traditional research-oriented course of study. Whatever school students emerge from, however, they are obliged to demonstrate proficiency in providing clinical services. This multi-volume handbook, is devoted to describing the core competency areas in providing psychological services which is relevant to practitioners as well as clinical researchers. As such, it covers assessment and conceptualization of cases, the application of evidence-based methods, supervision, consultation, cross-cultural factors, and ethics. The Handbook comprises three volumes with contributions by experts in each area. The goal is to provide detailed descriptions of competence levels and describe the developmental trajectory required to reach the highest of these levels. Each chapter in Volume I will follow a similar format including an overview, basic competencies, and expert competencies. This will facilitate easy comparison across chapters. All will be illustrated with case examples. Subsequent volumes will have a similarly structured format that will include maintenance factors, mechanisms of change, evidence-based treatment approaches, and a focus on the transition from basic skills to expert functioning. It is expected that the systematic presentation of skills will provide a gold standard against which to measure individual performance and in this regard will be valuable to students, instructors, and credentialing bodies.

Book excerpt: Approach your problems from It isn't that they can't see the right end and begin with the solution. the answers. The Scandal 'The Hermit Clad in Crane of Father Brown 'The Point of Feathers' in R. van Gulik's a Pin'. The Chinese Maze Murders. Growing specialization and diversification have brought a host of monographs and textbooks on increasingly specialized topics. However, the "tree" of knowledge of mathematics and related fields does not grow only by putting forth new branches. It also happens, quite often in fact, that branches which were thought to be completely disparate are suddenly seen to be related. Further, the kind and level of sophistication of mathematics applied in various sciences has changed drastically in recent years: measure theory is used (non-trivially) in regional and theoretical economics; algebraic geometry interacts with physics; the Minkowsky lemma, coding theory and the structure of water meet one another in packing and covering theory; quantum fields, crystal defects and mathematical programming profit from homotopy theory; Lie algebras are relevant to filtering; and prediction and electrical engineering can use Stein spaces. And in addition to this there are such new emerging SUbdisciplines as "completely integrable systems", "chaos, synergetics and large-scale order", which are almost impossible to fit into the existing classification schemes. They draw upon widely different sections of mathematics.
