His comfortable existence goes into meltdown, however, when right-wing activists go public with a hidden-camera video of Jacob in a hotel room with the married son of an ultra-conservative politician. Suddenly Jacob is the target of attacks from both ends of the political spectrum, and he retreats to his late grandfather's remote farmhouse to try to sort out the mess he has made of his life. He finds an ally in childhood friend Benny Stokes, and with Benny's quiet encouragement Jacob finally begins work on his long-delayed novel, although not without distractions from invading wildlife, a hostile barn cat, eccentric contractors, and his evolving feelings for Benny. Jacob soon discovers that he can't build a future without first coming to grips with the past.

Book excerpt: A haunting story about the destructive power of secrets, Karen Katchur's The Secrets of Lake Road is an accomplished and gripping suspenseful women's fiction debut Jo has been hiding the truth about her role in her high school boyfriend's drowning for sixteen years. Every summer, she drops her children off with her mother at the lakeside community where she spent summers growing up, but cannot bear to stay herself; everything about the lake reminds her of the guilt she feels. For her daughter Caroline, however, the lake is a precious world apart; its familiarity and sameness comforts her every year despite the changes in her life outside its bounds. At twelve years old and caught between childhood and adolescence, she longs to win her mother's love and doesn't understand why Jo keeps running away. Then seven-year-old Sara Starr goes missing from the community beach. Rescue workers fail to uncover any sign of her—but instead dredge up the bones Jo hoped would never be discovered, shattering the quiet lakeside community's tranquility. Caroline was one of the last people to see Sara alive on the beach, and feels responsible for her disappearance. She takes it upon herself to figure out what happened to the little girl. As Caroline searches for Sara, she uncovers the secrets her mother has been hiding, unraveling the very foundation of everything she knows about herself and her family. Caroline's coming-of-age story, mirrored with Jo's troubled teenage past, makes for an enthralling read that is impossible to put down and hard to forget.

Book excerpt: A heartwarming debut novel about the unlikely friendship between two outcasts of different generations who, in struggling to move on from the past, discover love, healing, and family in a charming New England lakeside community. Achingly tender, yet filled with laughter, The Lake House brings to life the wide range of human emotions and the difficult journey from heartbreak to healing. VICTORIA ROSE. Fifty years before, a group of teenage friends promised each other never to leave their idyllic lakeside town. But the call of Hollywood and a bigger life was too strong for Victoria . . . and she alone broke that pledge. Now she has come home, intent on making peace with her demons, even if her former friends shut her out. Haunted by tragedy, she longs to find solace with her childhood sweetheart, but even this tender man may be unable to forgive and forget. HEATHER BREGMAN. At twenty-eight, after years as a globe-trotting columnist, she’s abandoned her controlling fiancé and their glamorous city life to build one on her own terms. Lulled by a Victorian house and a gorgeous locale, she’s determined to make the little community her home. But the residents, fearful of change and outsiders, will stop at nothing to sabotage her dreams of lakeside tranquility. As Victoria and Heather become unlikely friends, their mutual struggle to find acceptance—with their neighbors and in their own hearts—explores the chance events that shape a community and offer the opportunity to start again.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book started out as a set of adventure stories that have been published locally in several outdoor newsletters. These stories were so well received that the adventures in other parts of the life of the author and his family were added. A love story naturally evolved because that was what kept them going and led them from the wilderness where they grew up to the big cities working in politics, aerospace, and other advanced technologies. They combined this “city work” with many kinds of adventures, mostly adventures in wild and unexplored mountains. The love became obvious as Bob struggled for over 50 years to satisfy a promise he made to a 13-year-old girl in grade school: “Someday I will build you a castle on a mountain!” The book is interesting because it describes a lifetime of outdoor adventures and the effort of two kids to stay alive and progress up the social ladder. The relevant message is that two very poor kids at the bottom of the social ladder can not only survive but rise to the top. The story is unique because the adventures have been experienced by no one else. From Bob falling off an 80-foot cliff, to Luci battling a new form of cancer that was supposed to take her life. Readers should take away a good feeling reading about successfully living through many adventures in the mountains and in social life. About the Author Bob Bristow has a BS in Mechanical Engineering, an MS in aeronautical Engineering, and all PhD coursework completed in Aerospace Engineering. He worked for Boeing for over 60 years where he built and ran his own research lab. He was an elder in his church and was involved in many professional organizations. Bob enjoys skiing, scuba diving, mountain climbing, fishing, and hunting. He is most passionate about prospecting and mining.

Book excerpt: Faced with the disintegration of their marriage, Matt Wheelock and Michelle Lomax turn to a charismatic philosopher known only as the Teacher for guidance and support. The Teacher, seemingly a man without an identity, preaches a message of a sublime universe of mind beyond our own material plane, hidden from all but the enlightened few. When two of the Teacher's acolytes die in a very public act of suicide, his remaining followers find themselves drawn into his world of deception and paranoia. They embark on a chaotic trek across Mexico and Central America, running toward a haven that only the Teacher can find, and from a threat that only he can identify. Along the way, they all find their most fundamental assumptions about who they are being challenged. Some will return unscathed, others will be changed forever – and some won't make it back at all. At the end of the road, Matt and Michelle will find that not only are there no easy answers to the questions they started out with, but that the questions themselves may no longer have any meaning.

Drawing upon extensive research, Richard Galloway's novel, The Medal, is an endearing fictional account of one soldier's personal triumph through combat, POW life, slavery, personal conflicts, romance, and, most importantly, loved ones--lost and found. The United States is in the midst of the Civil War, and Simon Bolivar Ramsey is a Union private in the 100th Regiment, New York State Volunteers. In addition to his loved ones back home, Simon has something even more. He carries his father's medal, a talisman that protects him through battles and internment. While in Andersonville, the most brutal of all Southern prisoner-of-war camps, the beloved medal is stolen. Following a dramatic escape, Simon falls victim to amnesia, is given a new identity, and begins a second life on a Confederate widow's Georgia plantation. Then, through a strange twist of fate, the medal reenters Simon's life, spurring partial memories and the revelation that his life has just begun. Will Simon be reunited with his past, or will his future leave a lasting impression on generations to come? Follow Simon on his journey to a surprising conclusion as he seeks to find true meaning and--ultimately--his true self.
