Download or read book Sweetness written by Torgny Lindgren and published by Random House. This book was released on 2011-05-25 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No doubt about it, Lindgren has joined the ranks of the greatest writers" Michel Crepu, La Croix The woman had come from a city in the south to lecture in a small village amid the snowbound forests of northern Sweden. She was a writer. After the lecture in the village hall an old man who had been sleeping at the back introduced himself, as she was to be his guest for the night. So it was that she moved in with Hadar, a man who lived on his own and was in the last stages of cancer. Not another house in sight, save for one just a field away; there lived Hadar's brother Olof, also on his own, and dying of heart disease. Neither brother would consent to die, the woman discovered, for that would give the other the satisfaction of outliving him. Cut off by a snow blizzard, the woman settles into Hadar's attic, leaving only to pick her way across to Olof's, and in the days that follows she acts as both nurse and confessor to each of them. She learns of the woman they shared and the son of disputed paternity, uncovering the tissue of lies and self-deceptions that keeps the ailing brothers alive in a bond of mutual loathing. Ultimately to her roles of nurse and confessor she adds a third: the hand of Providence . . . The author of The Way of a Serpent and Light is one of Sweden's outstanding practitioners of black humour. In Sweetness he has achieved a work of brilliant comic invention.

Book excerpt: A dark and moving examination of one man’s derailed life, by the Norwegian master who is “without question, Norway’s bravest, most intelligent novelist” (Per Petterson) In this existential murder mystery, it is Christmas Eve, and fifty-five-year-old professor Pal Andersen is alone, drinking coffee and cognac in his living room. Lost in thought, he looks out the window and sees a man strangle a woman in the apartment across the street. Failing to report the crime, he becomes paralyzed by his indecision. Professor Andersen’s Night is an unsettling yet highly entertaining novel, written in Dag Solstad’s signature concise, dark, and witty prose. "He’s a kind of surrealistic writer, of very strange novels," Haruki Murakami wrote. "I think he is serious literature".

Book excerpt: "In considering law through the lens of performance studies, the contributors in this volume emphasize the embodied, affective, and reiterative qualities that move law off the printed page and into the thick world of lived experience. They consider the blurring of lines between performance and the enactment of law, the transformative exchanges between the law and its many and varied stagings, and the impact or resonance of performativity in situations where innocence and guilt may be determined."--

Book Synopsis The Rector of Veilbye by : Steen Blicher
Download or read book The Rector of Veilbye written by Steen Blicher and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic Danish thriller dubbed 'The First Crime Novel.' The trial of Pastor Søren Jensen Quist of Vejlby took place at Aarhus in 1626. The trial centered around the unexplained disappearance in 1607 of a farm laborer named Jesper Hovgaard who was employed at Pastor Quist's rectory. Fifteen years later, in 1622, human remains were unearthed on the grounds of the rectory. The bones were believed to belong to Hovgaard and word soon spread that the Reverend Quist had slaughtered him and tried to conceal the crime. During the police investigation, two local men, who had past animosity toward Quist, testified that they witnessed the cleric murder Hovgaard while in a drunken rage. The Reverend protested his innocence but was found guilty and executed by decapitation on July 20, 1626. In 2006, 'The Rector of Veilbye' was selected for inclusion in the Cultural Canon of Denmark by the Danish Ministry of Culture. During the ceremony, an official declared that, "the style illuminates elegiac pain and discomfort in an eerily intense drama, and the story is difficult to shake off." Renowned Scandinavian critic Søren Baggesen stated "Blicher is not just the first of Danish literature's great storytellers, he is one of the few tragic poets, Danish literature has ever had."

Book excerpt: Wolf populations have recently made a comeback in Northern Europe and North America. These large carnivores can cause predictable conflicts by preying on livestock, and competing with hunters for game. But their arrivals often become deeply embedded in more general societal tensions, which arise alongside processes of social change that put considerable pressure on rural communities and on the rural working class in particular. Based on research and case studies conducted in Norway, Wolf Conflicts discusses various aspects of this complex picture, including conflicts over land use and conservation, and more general patterns of hegemony and resistance in modern societies.
