Book Synopsis Unfinished Austen: Interpreting "Catharine", "Lady Susan", "The Watsons" and "Sanditon" by : Joanne Wilkes
Download or read book Unfinished Austen: Interpreting "Catharine", "Lady Susan", "The Watsons" and "Sanditon" written by Joanne Wilkes and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2023-09-05 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unfinished Austen examines four texts that Jane Austen left incomplete: Catharine, or the Bower (1792–-3), Lady Susan (1795?), The Watsons (1803–-4?) and Sanditon (1817), none of them published till well after her death. Since very little in manuscript form survives from the six famous novels, these four manuscript texts offer insight into the novelist in the process of creation. They also problematize the romance plot prominent in the published novels by presenting this in a nebulous or incipient state that underlines its artificiality. These texts sometimes show how the romance plot is inflected by the financial condition in which young marriageable women can find themselves. Moreover, the stories (other than Catharine) have aroused the interest of many later writers—including writers for theatre and screen—who are eager to complete or to amplify them. They may do this through developing the stories to some kind of dénouement. Perhaps more intriguingly, however, these texts induce some writers to question the very enterprise of concluding an unfinished text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jane Austen Daddys Girl: The Life and Influence of the Revd George Austen is a poignant and pertinent examination of a relationship which became the cornerstone of Janes life, the bedrock of family and faith as she knew them. Our epic journey through the life and times of the Reverend George Austen will lead us from his early childhood and humble beginnings as an orphan, through his schooldays and on to Oxford University, and beyond. We will follow his career in the Church of England and as master of his own boarding school, as well as peek into his marriage and home life. Dovetailed in with this revealing biography is a thorough interpretation of fatherhood as a theme, as outlined in Janes novels, with scrutiny of the fathers of all her most beloved fictional families. Chapter by chapter we will understand more about Janes own view on fatherhood and how the Reverend Austen, as her father, colored and created that view. As we draw George and Janes relationship closer to us, we understand anew the many layers of clever meaning that Jane Austen interlaced within her stories. Through an examination of this unique father-daughter bond, Jane Austen fans everywhere can pull up a footstool in Georges library and become further united in spirit with their beloved novelist.

Book Synopsis Jane Austen and Her Predecessors by : Frank W. Bradbrook
Download or read book Jane Austen and Her Predecessors written by Frank W. Bradbrook and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1967 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a study of influences on Jane Austen's art and views of life. She assimilated and transformed certain writings of earlier essayists and novelists; she was herself a potent influence. Dr Bradbrook provides the literary critic with a fresh position from which to inspect the novels. He isolates several kinds of influence that had affect on Jane, which he inspects one by one. First there are the periodical essayists, the moralists in prose and the writers of conduct books. These were sources of general reflections on moral and social behaviour: and especially interesting to Jane Austen when they touched on the position of women. Dr Bradbrook sketches her knowledge of and taste in the drama and poetry of the eighteenth century. In the second half of the book Dr Bradbrook analyses the influence that earlier novelists had on Jane Austen. Useful appendices reproduce some of the rarer sources.
