Following chapters examine issues of state and society: the ideology of the ruling class, legal procedures, popular culture, and daily life. The final section surveys Chu religion and literature and includes an analysis of the Chuci, the great anthology of Chu poetry, and its impact on mainstream Chinese literature. A translation of the Chu Silk Manuscript¿ is appended. This document has intrigued scholars since its discovery in Changsha some sixty years ago. The inclusion of this rare and difficult text, available for the first time in an effective and accessible translation, will make this volume indispensable to students and scholars of early Chinese history and thought.

Book excerpt: "In Classical China, crafted artifacts offered a material substrate for abstract thought as graphic paradigms for social relationships. Focusing on the fifth to second centuries B.C., Martin Powers explores how these paradigms continued to inform social thought long after the material substrate had been abandoned. In this detailed study, the author makes the claim that artifacts are never neutral: as a distinctive possession, each object—through the abstracting function of style—offers a material template for scales of value. Likewise, through style, pictorial forms can make claims about material “referents,” the things depicted. By manipulating these scales and their referents, artifacts can shape the way status, social role, or identity is understood and enforced. The result is a kind of “spatial epistemology” within which the identities of persons are constructed. Powers thereby posits a relationship between art and society that operates at a level deeper than iconography, attributes, or social institutions. Historically, Pattern and Person traces the evolution of personhood in China from a condition of hereditary status to one of achieved social role and greater personal choice. This latter development, essential for bureaucratic organization and individual achievement, challenges the conventional opposition between “Western” individuals and “collective” Asians."

Book excerpt: Imperial China in 5BC was a divided country where belief in religions; mysticism and politics were interwoven together. 10 year old Su Ling, growing up in poor surroundings was soon to discover that the honour bestowed on her by her parents meant abandonment to the work-rooms of the local Grand Administrator in his vast complex of buildings. In the workhouse, the disciplined lifestyle required stamina and sacrifice. She was later transferred to The Temple of the Heavenly Bird where she was to become a chosen one for a secret esoteric group and educated in the ancient mysteries. Through two traumatic episodes in her life, where the sense of loss overwhelmed her; there gradually came a transformation. The quiet obedient child became a fierce creature who felt betrayed by the group she had sworn an allegiance to. Her rage knew no bounds as she risked her own life by expressing her contempt for her Masters and colleagues alike. After a supernatural disclosure about the torment she had suffered; there gradually came a sense of peace which enabled her to continue to carry out her duties helping to fight evil within the temple, and throughout the country beyond.
