This book was released on 2021-08-04 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Urban Rituals in Sacred Landscapes in Hellenistic Asia Minor, Christina G. Williamson examines the phenomenon of monumental sanctuaries in the countryside of Asia Minor that accompanied the second rise of the Greek city-state in the Hellenistic period. Moving beyond monolithic categories, Williamson provides a transdisciplinary frame of analysis that takes into account the complex local histories, landscapes, material culture, and social and political dynamics of such shrines in their transition towards becoming prestigious civic sanctuaries. This frame of analysis is applied to four case studies: the sanctuaries of Zeus Labraundos, Sinuri, Hekate at Lagina, and Zeus Panamaros. All in Karia, these well-documented shrines offer valuable insights for understanding religious strategies adopted by emerging cities as they sought to establish their position in the expanding world.

Book Synopsis City and Empire in the Age of the Successors by : Ryan Boehm

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the chaotic decades after the death of Alexander the Great, the world of the Greek city-state became deeply embroiled in the political struggles and unremitting violence of his successors’ contest for supremacy. As these presumptive rulers turned to the practical reality of administering the disparate territories under their control, they increasingly developed new cities by merging smaller settlements into large urban agglomerations. This practice of synoikism gave rise to many of the most important cities of the age, initiated major shifts in patterns of settlement, and consolidated numerous previously independent polities. The result was the increasing transformation of the fragmented world of the small Greek polis into an urbanized network of cities. Drawing on a wide array of archaeological, epigraphic, and textual evidence, City and Empire in the Age of the Successors reinterprets the role of urbanization in the creation of the Hellenistic kingdoms and argues for the agency of local actors in the formation of these new imperial cities.

Book excerpt: The history of Greek sanctuaries reflects the development of ancient Greek culture and civilization. Traditionally studies of sanctuaries have been mainly descriptive, with much emphasis on the architectural features. This collection rakes a wider view. The articles, all by archaeologists or historians of religion, explore the ongm and development of sanctuaries through detailed investigations of some of the most major and some less well-known sites. They stress the social significance of sanctuaries, as well as the important role they played within particular cults. Greek Sanctuaries: New Approaches is important and engaging reading for students of ancient Greek history or archaeology. Ir will also be of interest to people visiting the sites.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "These twenty papers, presented at an international conference in Athens, deal with various aspects of the so-called villas in Neopalatial Crete and their possible predecessors or equivalents in the preceding, Protopalatial period. They are followed by transcripts of the discussions of the symposium. Among the problems treated are: the origin of the "villa system", the definition of the "villa", the architectural analysis of buildings and building complexes, the magico-religious background of the "Villa", the role of religious painting, the origin of the Cretan andreion, and a study of ceramic exchange between towns and outlying settlements in Neopalatial eastern Crete. Special discussions concern the functional analysis of the architecture, administration and bureaucracy, with special reference to seals, sealings and Linear A tablets and political geography." --
