Book excerpt: The lethality of conflicts between insurgent groups and counter-insurgent security forces has risen markedly since the Second World War just as those of conventional, or inter-state wars have declined. For several decades, conflicts within states rather than between them have been the prevalent form of organised political violence worldwide. Recent conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria have fired interest in colonial experiences of rebellion, while current western interventions in sub-Saharan Africa have prompted accusations of 'militarist humanitarianism'. Yet, despite mounting interest in counter-insurgency and empire, comparative investigation of colonial responses to insurrection and civil disorder is sparse. Some scholars have written of a 'golden age of counter-insurgency', which began with Britain's declaration of a Malayan Emergency in 1948 and ended with the withdrawal of US ground troops from Vietnam in 1973. It is with this period, if not with any presumed 'golden age' that this volume is concerned. This Handbook connects ideas about contested decolonization and the insurgencies that inspired it with an analysis of patterns and singularities in the conflicts that precipitated the collapse of overseas empires. It attempts a systematic study of the global effects of organized anti-colonial violence in Asia and Africa. The objective is to reconceptualize late colonial violence in the European overseas empires by exploring its distinctive character and the globalizing processes underpinning it.

Book excerpt: While much has been written about banana production and, in particular, the influential United Fruit Company in the circum-Caribbean, relatively little has been written about Afro-Caribbean migrant laborers in general and female Afro-Caribbean migrant laborers specifically. So little has been written in part because so little can be found about or from Afro-Caribbean women workers in traditional historical archives. In my dissertation, I draw on my interdisciplinary interests in Ethnic Studies, Caribbean Studies, Latin American Studies, Black Diaspora Studies, and Gender and Women studies to examine the histories of Afro-Caribbean labor migration during the inception of banana industrialization in the circum-Caribbean at the turn of the twentieth-century, with an eye toward capturing the experiences of Afro-Caribbean female migrant laborers. Using the industrialization of the banana as a backdrop, my project works to complicate depictions of racialized and gendered labor migration in the circum-Caribbean through a tracing of the development of racialization, gender, class, citizenship, and labor in various material depictions of Afro-Caribbean workers. I do so by conducting a visual and discursive analysis of a range of cultural artifacts--cinematic and documentary film, photography, UFCO advertisements, oral histories, and archival material from the United States, Honduras, and Great Britain.

This massive state intervention lasted for 108 days and led to the rounding up of over 7,000 people in areas the state deemed “crime hot spots.” The government justified this action and subsequent police violence on the grounds that these measures were restoring “the rule of law.” In this milieu of expanded policing powers, protests occasioned by police violence against lower-class black people have often garnered little sympathy. But in an improbable turn of events, six officers involved in the shooting of three young people were charged with murder at the height of the state of emergency. To explain this, the host of Crime Watch, the nation’s most popular television show, alleged that there must be a special power at work: obeah. From eighteenth-century slave rebellions to contemporary responses to police brutality, Caribbean methods of problem-solving “spiritual work” have been criminalized under the label of “obeah.” Connected to a justice-making force, obeah remains a crime in many parts of the anglophone Caribbean. In Experiments with Power, J. Brent Crosson addresses the complex question of what obeah is. Redescribing obeah as “science” and “experiments,” Caribbean spiritual workers unsettle the moral and racial foundations of Western categories of religion. Based on more than a decade of conversations with spiritual workers during and after the state of emergency, this book shows how the reframing of religious practice as an experiment with power transforms conceptions of religion and law in modern nation-states.
