This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Work in Physiological Chemistry This edition is greatly enlarged and indeed wholly re-written. The directions for laboratory work cover the three great food-stuffs, and the fluids and secretions of the body. Brief explanatory descriptions of the various sub stances and secretions studied are added in order to give the student a better survey of the subject matter as a whole. Every medical student should receive thorough drill in the laboratory, not merely in so-called urine analysis, but in the broader field of physiological chemistry. He should be taught to observe and to reason; to correlate the facts brought out in the laboratory in their relation to physiology, hygiene and disease. These notes have been prepared with the object of furthering such study, and it is hoped that they will prove as useful to others as to the author's own classes in the University of Michigan. The experimental work laid down in the following pages has been repeatedly verified in actual student work and the directions given are such as to insure results. The.author's classes devote the entire afternoon, daily, for three months to this work. Even with this amount of time at their disposal certain parts of physiological chemistry must be left untouched. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Directions for Laboratory Work in Physiological Chemistry: For the Use of Students The second edition of this Manual appears as the result of a thorough revision of the original edition, which was issued last year; numerous additions to the subject-matter have also been inserted. In its preparation the author has had in mind to provide a guide for systematic work in a course in Physiological Chemistry such as is given in the majority of the American Medical Schools. An attempt has been made to present, in experimental form, all of the essentials of the subject. At the same time, the experiments are simple and of a form which would not overstep the possibilities of equipment and time available in the average laboratory in physiological chemistry. Those facts which do not allow of simple experimental study have been ignored. The text preceding the experiments has been limited to an explanation merely sufficient for a correct understanding and performance of the work indicated, with the expectation that the laboratory course will be supplemented by lectures showing the important relationship of the pure chemistry of the subject to physiological and pathological processes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of Physiological Chemistry IN view of the results attained from the course given in physiological chemistry in this University, as well as the experience of others, the author is firmly convinced of the superiority of the laboratory method of instruction over the didactic, believing that it is only by practical work that the student can become familiar with the physio logical changes in progress in the animal body and their products. This book has been prepared with the aim of imparting accurate knowledge through the student's own observation. It has seemed advisable to include with the directions for experimental work a brief explanation of the facts observed, so as to call attention to their meaning; or, at times, to state others which are important, but which could not well be demonstrated in such a course as this. Some acquaintance with general chemistry and with chemical manipulation is presupposed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Hand-Book of Urine Analysis and Physiological Chemistry The Object of this book is to supply to students and practitioners of medicine a guide to a course in physiological chemistry and the examination Of the urine and the contents of the stomach. The first part of the book is taken up with simple exer cises in physiological chemistry, which it is hoped will give the student an elementary insight into the chemical side of physiological processes. While the exercises are not as full or as complete as might be desired, they are equal to the amount of time which is usually allotted to medical students in this subject. Of the part Of this book which deals with the urine and the gastric contents little remains to be said, except that, so far as possible, no tests have been given which do not rest on a good chemical foundation. The aim has been to give as few tests as possible, and these to be chosen for their suitability to purely clinical needs. N O operations have been described which have not undergone a thorough trial with students in the laboratory. In conclusion, I wish to thank Mr. Carroll D. Partridge for much help with the proof-reading, and Dr. C. N. B. Camac for the very useful diag nostic tables at the end of the book. Cornell university medical college, new york, September I, 1901. This book was released on 2015-07 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Manual of Physical Chemistry In presenting this manual of laboratory exercises in physical chemistry, the authors have been prompted by a threefold object: first, to facilitate the task of the instructor in handling large classes of students beginning a course of practical physical chemistry; second, to assist the student in recording his observations in a clear and comprehensive manner; and third, to present such quantitative exercises as will be particularly desirable in the training of students of engineering. In view of the fact that there are, as a rule, available for laboratory work not more than two and one-half hours at a time, it has been found desirable to have the different pieces of apparatus set up beforehand by the instructor. To this end, each experiment is preceded by an exact list of the apparatus and chemicals needed. It is believed that this will materially aid the instructor in assembling the necessary equipment. At the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the laboratory course immediately follows the completion of the theoretical course in physical chemistry, and students are thus prepared to take up the study of any experiment herein listed. It is therefore found practical to prepare the equipment for one or two units of each exercise before the laboratory course starts, and to shift the student successively from one experiment to another. In this way, an excessive amount of preparatory work is avoided. Many of the experiments have been in use in their present form at this Institute, and elsewhere, for a number of years, and have been found to be thoroughly satisfactory. Directions have been made as concise as possible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies From the Laboratory of Physiological Chemistry, Sheffield Scientific School of Yale College: For the Year 1884-85 The chemical changes resulting from the 'action of unorganized ferments are among the most interesting and important of those which occur in the animal organism. Ferment action plays such an important part in the chemical processes incident to life that definite knowledge of the conditions favorable and inimical to the action of any ferment occurring in the animal body must necessarily be of great physiological value.
